Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

The raw materials are a confusing bunch, if you think abou the "grades":
Originally, and in the FSS planet INFO (RESOURCES) panel they are arranged on a three tier system.
Then they were expanded to a five tier system, which is still in use in ship INVENTORY tab and maybe with engineers.
And the material traders use a four tier system (I have a vague recollection, which may well be wrong, that at first the traders too used five tiers).

I've been mining this week for the CG, not for those minerals specific just plotted up at some pristine metallic rings around 500ly out and done a couple hours a night
never thought I'd like it but there is something that kept me going, put me in the top 25%

although I still have plenty to unlock and a few engineers still to visit, this week's little jaunt has stirred something in me, the deep space is calling me..

Well done! I'm at 49%. It's certainly slow going!!

Thank you, upto 57% after last night, you may well know this but I found something out by accident. So if you're doing those massacre missions, simply to rank up, yes the money is nice, but the rank of the opponent is of far greater importance. I have been taking the Dangerous or Elite ranked massacre missions, but only being supplied with deadly or dangerous opponents to kill. I was flying around, taking a break from killing when I happened into a system with a compromised nav beacon. I nuzzled up to the beacon and there I found a bunch of wanted NPCs, ranked at Dangerous and Elite, I hung around and killed a few until my shields were wafer thin (Mr Creosote) then headed off to the nearest station to collect the rewards. Yes they were less than the massacre mission, by some margin, but I don't need money, I need the higher ranked kills. I'll be back there tonight. I killed something like 4 Elite ships and 5 Dangerous and earned an extra % to my rank in half the time it takes with the massacre missions.

Breaks the monotony too.

Thank you, that's a good shout. Yes have made over 1bn credits since Christmas from massacre missions and the associated bounties. So yes, it's fair to say that I don't need the money. Will find myself a compromised nav beacon and see whether I can speed the process up at all! Thank you for the thought.

Find Compromised Nav Beacon. Find nearby systems spawning Pirate Massacre/Pirate Assassination* missions to the Comp Nav system.
Slaughter pirates. Even better if the Missions are given by Fed/Imp factions. Can also fit collector limpets for bonus mats.
Four birds, one stone:
Combat rank.
Molto credits.
Fed/Imp ranking.
Engineering mats.

*The assassination target will jump into the Nav Beacon 99% of the time. However, caution advised, you can end up with several dropping in at the same time.

Funny we're all talking combat at the same time :D

I've just fitted my fighter with bursts, swapping out the beams. I'm not sure what is best - hard to tell really given their engineering but it seems I'd tried bursts somewhere before as they were in storage.

Anyway, had a couple if decent fights although the deadly conda was a challenge. 51% now.

As @Simon Templar says, slow going!

Edit

When I say bursts, I really mean pulses. D'oh!

Better against hulls, increased piercing. Focused engineering makes them even better.

^this although the DPS is lower.

I've always assumed a beam and burst are the same type of laser, just one was continuous and hence more DPS (at the expense of power draw)
so am I right in assuming that bursts are better for targeting modules and beams are better for all round damage?

Yes bursts seem better than beam for hull/module. I swapped the beams on my Cobra for burst. The beams were draining the PD far too fast. It's now a bit slower taking shields down, but I can keep the bursts and the MCs firing together.

Thank you, will try tonight.

51-49 to you, think we were both low forties a fortnight ago. We could race to Elite. It would be like the slow race on Monty Python.

Right! Long old wet work job, upsetting the local faction in Biko whilst pew pew-ing a lot of innocent haulers (30% erm...Novice!) and a final trade run have got all my mats gathered for the push to soup up the old Krait into a meaner fighting machine.
Just hang around til the morro when I can stock up on cytoscramblers, flip the bird at Archon, and go mining some Painite and Bromelite to entice some new engineering friends...
