Odyssey trailer - thoughts?

I think its adorable people are running over each other to claim its DOA or it doesn’t compare well to other FPS titles.

I’d bodes well for future forum lolz because I dunno about you but I was getting bored of the Elite v Eve/NMS/SC. Can’t wait for Elite V CoD/ME threads.
You have a valid point - the old arguments are getting rather hackneyed... There must be huge mileage to be made comparing Odyssey to every game released since the 1980's that had even the vaguest of FPS action :ROFLMAO:

The impression I get as a n00b (in comparison to those who have been members here for many years) is that there are some here who are concerned that this radical move away from zoom-zoom pew-pew to leg-leg pew-pew may just be a successful gambit and many others who are familiar with 'emergent gameplay' may make thier wicked way onto the 'killing fields' of Odyssey! (not a facetious comment - the undertone may be there)

Whatever Odyssey's FPS gameplay brings will be a pleasant diversion, and the remaining gameplay, as yet to be shown, could be fascinating.

That's really the question. As will be the jetpack capability .. 0.5g boost up on the roof and snipe down from there??
I hope so. Sort of. I am assuming that the 27 settlement layouts they spoke of are all custom builds (nothing procedural)... and have been thoroughly tested for exactly where players could access, sight angles, camping blinds, etc. 🙄.

Hi Bantha :)

Back to topic, ;)... (.though some of the recent posts brought a smile to my face).
My impressions of the video?.....first thing I noticed was that some of the peoples/players feet were or seemed to be not connecting with the ground, they seemed to be 'hovering' a few inches/centimeters above at some points, which was glaringly obvious, and no footprints?... Overall the video was okay, so I'll leave it at that.

In my own opinion I personally want to see more of other hinted at content, new plant life, some more examples of tenuous atmospheres, perhaps some indication of new spacecraft, and how being on foot will reveal other advantages, other than the FPS content which was shown. In short, skip the on foot combat at some point, let's see how being on foot will enhance the other features of the present game, in exploration, trade and material collecting or general 'friendly' social confrontations in various scenarios, please.:)

That is not true. When I play on PC with a controller, or PS4 with a controller, it still says 'press J' to disengage. Really, that's not annoying at all on PS4.
The first I get (and which can be avoided by unbinding keyboard binds) since I play with an Xbox pad on PC, but the latter, is that really the case on PS4? Sloppy/lol.

As for those jetpacks, I hope they have tea bagging functionality. Wasted opportunity otherwise.

Hi Frillop :)

A typical "trademark" of low level FPS titles from small 5-people amateur studios. I really hope they can improve these visuals for when the alpha comes out.

Yes quite...we, as in the present game still have the spaceships undercarriage dropping below the station floor when landing and then coming back up to sit where they should be, a minor thing, but just adds to the feeling of , well, sloppiness to be honest.

Jack :)

There you go on 6:54 but i dunno if that is the full thrust.
Thank you for the timestamp - I was just about to switch from phone to laptop to have another look and that helped. I'm going to call that a low-G jump with a sound effect... or maybe a pack-assisted jump, but... have a look a look at the lower left Hud display - in the stream, they spoke about needing to manage our suits power, much like pips on our ship.

When he makes the jump at 6:54 there is absolutely no drop in suit power (yellow bar with ⚡ icon). Compare that to when the Energy Link tool is used to overload the air lock (4:20) - the suit power guage drops from 94 to 53. So, maybe he had a G5 Krait jetpack that can permaboost?

Certanly not game breaking at all, but from an immersion pov, it is a bit annoying. That hasn't stopped me from enjoying ED for the past 5-6 years and I still play on a daily basis.

Someone on youtube complained about energy weapons needing a reload....

My take is that I would rather have batteries (in other words; ammo) that I carry with me to reload an energy weapon, compared to energy weapons using the suit power.

Any thoughts on that?

I'm more concerned about Frontier's reputation as a professional studio
That is the general 'tag line' of many of the 'caring' members here...

Will you have the alpha to play? If things are still 'amiss' at least feedback duing the alpha stage may raise their awareness of the issue.
I guess it just depends on exactly how 'old' the 'old build' the trailer was made on, and how much 'progress' will be apparent in the build we get to use.

Not game-breaking, true, and if it was a one-man project I certainly wouldn't mind. I'm more concerned about Frontier's reputation as a professional studio.
I don't think you have to spend time being concerned about that. They have so many games out now. :) But, it is up to you. Burn energy on trivial things or save it and use it when it is needed. :) Such as when the Alpha hits.

I preferred the first Mass Effect where we effectively had infinite ammo but could overheat the weapon, requiring a brief cool-down period, to the later Mass Effects which had heat-sink ejection (magazines in all but name) but a finite supply of them.

I think it’s too early to tell for Odyssey - will we have ammo synthesis on our ships? What gameplay is there around limited hand weapon ammo?

I quite like the idea of running out of main weapon ammo as long as there’s interesting situations that you can get into because of it.

I work at one of the large gamepublishers and developers in the industry and for the games I worked on, Alpha was about 2-3 month old branch that got polished until 1 month ahead of Alpha release.

EDIT: After that it was just major (as in gamebreaking) bugfixes and no polish at all. And that could stretch for 2 weeks before Alpha. Then it was locked, while the meat of the game had 2-3 months of additional content/polish done when the alpha was released for public.

Ahh... that is a good mechanic.... but as you also say... it is an interesting game mechanic if you actually run out of ammo. During the livestream following the mission playthrough video, they mentioned that there are places where you can recharge your suit. I do wonder if that would also recharge/restock your ammo when it comes to energy weapons... hmmm. :)
