Odyssey trailer - thoughts?

The CM's made the point a couple of times that Odyssey can be played without combat in the last few mentions of the expansion in their streams. It appears to have either been forgotten or not noted from the streams.

Oh I don't think its been forgotten at all and this pic accurately conveys what some are feeling in regards to it....

..what sort of missiles were you using in Red, Leo? ... and is there room for another pacifist in your wing?

I think this incident lol happened a good few years ago when Red was relatively new to the game and I spotted him in open and made my way in an asp or something to say our customary hello to each other.

Don't play dumb. Community didn't ask for fully fledged FPS. Most people wanted:
a) ship internals,
b) space walks,
b) walking around the planets (not shooting people, just walking around, fixing your ship and gathering materials to fix your ship, mining maybe),
IN THAT ORDER.
Source: every f*****g social media (YT comments, reddit etc.), even this very forum. But yeah, keep pretending FPS != space legs.

Again playing community representative?

But perhaps you'll somehow still be able to walk around planets not shooting people, just walking around, so you'll still get something.

Haha it was ancient, pre-engineers for a start which is the main reason I couldn't catch him - I was in some crap-tier Vulture builld in the days when the PP had enough juice to run a small dashboard fan and some fairy lights. leaving me with terrible thrusters. I never bothered about being able to run away because, well Vulture, but sadly that did mean when someone else did it, I wasn't catching them. This was probably within the first 3 months that I'd played

Yep. Agree again.
It could be closed as a duplicate.
In which case, if someone feels that strongly to make such an antagonistic comment, why would they then participate in the thread?
Unless they’re simply being deliberately antagonistic in the first place for no other reason than because...
It could be argued that that is just nasty
I remember disagreeing with a ganker on this forum and was accused of being "hateful".

Now sarcasm is "nasty".

Thing is, it was a good point I was making.

Now back to Odyssey trailer, I'm too cynical to say that I hope that it's not all the expansion has to offer, but I will once again emphasize that I think it was a nice organic effort by the CMs, not a PR stunt. They simply tried to give us a glimpse into the expansion as we were clamouring for. It is also entirely possible that the team is working their behinds off, and nobody has time for "dev diaries". Because truth be told, they didn't have to. Just announce the date, and be done with it. And the "cod-style" mission seemed cool to them and they and executed it. It is also entirely possible that they did it in their spare time. Or just tried to do "organic gameplay". We will see soon enough.

Think you're cynical, hows this for cynical, the demo was so they could lower the shock value of receiving the alpha and it being in a state only a few steps away from the rough video.

Okay, that was unnecessary, but the white knights have been raging on pointless things for a while so why not.

But the line between the handbags has been drawn. Its up to frontier now to play bingo and see which side the game itself lands on. Not in our hands :)

Spacelegs was NEVER ment to be FPS only, yes some pew pew however never the main thing. What was a big wish, was to get out of your seat and
walk around in your ship and space stations.

Now that being said, not incorporating a solid FPS when you launch the spacelegs (TM) addition would just be a wasted opportunity, but it need to be done right, NOT CQC style.

I don't think we'll ever truly know, but as far as the fps irrelevance goes, are we the vocal minority or actually a representation of the greater majority?

At least here, i haven't read any excitement about fps combat for the sake of shooting. Maybe one thread. What does the rest of the internet think? Are there people salivating for loot drops and upgrading the weapons to god tier to be op? Dismissing ship play like we do fps, picking their side saying ships were yesterdays old crap, fps legs is the future of the game?

No idea.

I personally welcome it. If I'm going to choose to play a fps and won't have to change games to do so, it will make me happy. I'm not really competitive at fps games (from occasionally doing other things) so PVE fps with squadmates is more than welcome for me. Better than getting lobbied with gamers that only play fps games all day every day and being spawn killed over and over.

Unlike most of those other AAA fps games you can still play the game without doing that specifically.

PS the story mode on any dedicated fps I played was usually trash imo so that was always a no-go. black ops zombies and such was what really got me in to it which was conveniently PVE and not competitive

I think even the most dedicated hitchhikers will secretly hanker for a Sidewinder.

I'm excited if that counts. (It might not, I'm KS backer but still here, trading Cobalt in game at the moment). The SRV was something I never knew I wanted until it arrived but I still love that little thing to bits and though I don't expect to be any good at Odyssey particularly, I think the cover of buildings might bring a radical new flavour too. In space big fish eats the little fish pretty much, there's nowhere for little fish to hide. Being able to duck into buildings AND take down the power grid changes that dynamic quite a bit? Little fish is a lot safer in the reef. Speed and agility is more of a contender again?

I want to use the FPS to explore planets (I like exo biology) of course but it's good to mix things up and a little pew pew .. sabotage (if I "must"), espionage (if I dream!!) kind of gives ships their mystique back in a way for me. Now my ship is playing hard to get! The little minx, and absence makes the heart grow fonder ...

I like your analogy with the SRV.
Never knew I wanted it either until it arrived, and now it’s a part of the game I enjoy. Not a big part granted, but I’m glad it’s there.

Footfall could well be the same. If it’s done well. Sunset screen shots with my Commander himself looking out, instead of the SRV, will be very nice I think.
And maybe a little FPS pew pew, sure. (although given what I’ve seen this will be limited, and possibly just a once-only experience before I get back in my ship and carry on playing the game...).

I also very much doubt I’ll be bothered going down the engineers route for body suits, hand weapons and whatnot though. I wouldn’t engineer my SRV either, if that was an option (and I’m grateful it isn’t).

I also have a ship-related reason to get in my SRV, which is to farm materials to improve my ships. SRVs fit in with the wider (space ship) game. I’m wondering whether something similar is planned for Odyssey, or whether it is literally just a stand-alone optional add-on feature? Anyone know?

This might make a difference to my quality tolerance levels. If there’s a bigger reason to get out my ship, then I’ll do it, and will accept a lower quality, because I gain in other ways.
But if the reason to walk around is simply to do it (which is perfectly legitimate), then it has to be implemented well, it really does...

New ways (mission types) to earm mission rewards? Wouldn't be surprised if you can't scavenge mats on foot too, though how efficiently will need answering.

May not want to engineer guns but reduce mass and FSD boosts are exploration ship mods. How about extend O2 supply, improve life support for extreme temp environments, turbocharge your jetpack!? Could be up for that (I'm obsessed with jetpacks).
