First exploration

Is there a web based application similar to EDD as I can acces it on my iPad ?

I believe you can upload to EDSM from an XBox and that'll give you the same sort of flight log, maps and other history as EDD.

Not sure how to set it up but there's a link to their discord at the bottom of the page, which is the best place to ask.

First stop will be the LBN 623 nebula.

As CPT Oates once said
"I'm just going outside and maybe some time"
At some point on your journey, you are going to discover a system nobody has ever found before you. It is a thrilling moment. Despite you scanning it, you will not get your name on it until you have handed in the Cartography Data to a station or FC but remember, you lose a stack of cash on those.

My tip is this, when you find such a system, scan it then bookmark it. Once you have handed in the data, use the bookmark to look at the system. See all the bodies in there with your name on. Thrilling.

Good advice, thank you

Little Chick flight report

I've travelled 1,509.12 ly from start point
Visited LBN 623 and Veil West nebulae
Scanned 65 systems, none unique
Rank earned today.......Trailblazer

Loving it out here in the Abyss and it is true "no-one can here you scream" I've tried it and nobody did

So another thing worth mentioning now is some more scanning that can be done.

When you land on a planet surface, those things that produce the mats at both geological sites and biological sites, they can be scanned also. You need to use your Comp Scanner. All ships come with them fitted as standard, you may need to go into (right panel) Fire Groups to assign it a slot in your hard points.

You can keep track of all your discoveries in the Codex (also right panel). Don't worry about where it says you can find the things, if you find one, 'Lava Spout' for example, it will tick them off for you (in the codex they turn from Orange to Blue).

You earn small amounts of money for discovering these things 50,000 and 2,500

Most things in the Codex also are expandable, so there are more than one of each type to find. I will post screen grabs later. Have a thoroughly good dig around in that Codex.

Thank you. I did wonder what the comp scanner did

Planets and stars will automatically ‘complete’ themselves in the Codex but there are a few other things that will not.

Sectors:

As you probably know, the map is split up into sectors, you make a bunch of discoveries in one sector, that fills that section in the Codex, as you move into another sector, you start filling that one.

You can see in the picture above, that I was in the Inner Scutum-Centaurus Arm, it tells me that on the left and on the right, it shows the map and my 'cursor' is on that segment, highlighted in orange. At any time, you can select a different sector by using the map, to see what other discoveries you have made in other sectors.

The table on the left is telling you all of the things you can expect to find in that sector.

As in the above picture, if we select Astronomical Bodies, we get this:

IMG_0687.JPG

This splits those up into sub sections, in the picture above stars, gas giants etc. A brief overview of what you have found and what you have not.

Finally, the varied types. Clicking one of the above will take you into a further sub category.

So we can see by the above that I had, in that sector, discovered a 'Rocky Planet with no atmosphere' and the blue one, the non terra formable one, is the one I discovered. The terraformable one, still in orange, is one I still have not found.

This is the same for every thing you discover. Geo sites, alien stuff and other stuff that is floating about in space.

As I said, honking and FSS, will resolve the planets and stars. Things you on the planet face, whilst can be done in a ship, you might as well get the SRV out and use the Comp scanner in that, you're probably down there collecting stuff anyway. Just map it in your fire groups, it is easy to use.

There is another category, things such as Larange Clouds, This sit out in space, every ship has a comp scanner fitted, you'll need to do the same for them.

None of this is vital to the game, but you're on a long trek and anything that helps you document that (and fill some time) is good.

Truly fabulous and congrats on your journey so far.... lots and lots of terrific advice in this thread. I see only one small problem... if you do everything discussed... you will be old and greybearded by the time you get back. There are varieties of explorers, first in scouts, exploration scouts, mapping scouts.
as you travel, you are going to see stars where only the star is explored... this is a sign that a first in scout has gone through and honked the star without a dss.
the next is a star system that has been investigated so that each star and planet is scanned and catalogued. the final is where you will see a system that has been scanned, catalogued and mapped..... I qualify as an exploration scout as I check eveything about the planets but don't do the mapping. If you want to be a mapping scout.... prepare for a long, long journey with the possibility of someone coming behind, scanning what you have scanned and then beating his tail back to the bubble to claim his/her name on the star. that is always a risk when doing long travels. go out, get you name on systems, come back and then map on your second, third or fourth trip out. Sag A will always call you.... something like"Bali Hai is calling, from the sea and the sky,. come to me, you hear it whisper, come to me,,,, come to me"

I have done a bit of mapping but I seem to use a lot of probes to 100%

Since my start point I have jumped an average of 33ly per jump. Doesn't this mean I'm missing a lot of systems?
E.G
min jump = 8ly
Max jump = 35ly
That's 2 systems I'm missing every jump if I do the max.
What are all you're thoughts on this ?

There is an easy help, commander, you just need to learn the probe patterns... :)

Regarding the style and how much you should or want to scan, explore etc... In my first exploration trip, I scanned almost everything... Then I decided to speed up my progress a bit and decided to scan only systems, where there are WW, ELW, GG... Of course when I scanned them, I would map the high value objects...

Today I consider myself more a traveller - I travel and scan/map as I want or as my mood dictates... Sometimes I rush towards that O type star and simply ignore most of the other sectors, sometimes I scan even the smallest rocky body... I have to say, that I only map ELW and sometimes terraformable WW... And those that have something on the surface I want to check... Like Bio signs...

I am now more interested in finding unusual stuff, rather than money and glory...

I think there are something like 4bn systems in the game. The figure often thrown around is that as a group, all players of Elite, across all platforms, all modes, we have only discovered less that 1%, so don't worry too much about missing stuff.
