Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

So thanks to no CG's this week I started making my way to the peak
as there is no way in game to plot the route I used https://spansh.co.uk/fleet-carrier to plot and then bookmarked each point
I go off in my DBX and every 20 mins I plot a route for the FC, we meet up around 1500ly up from the bubble at Plaa Trua ES-K d8-0 and it has 2 pristine ice rings

tonight will do a bit of mining see what's what and then head off for the next leg, hoping to come across some undiscovered systems soon but I'm guessing the further up I go the less chance of finding any

...
Which also made me wonder last night whether it's okay to post Odyssey stuff here since not everyone can get it early for whatever reason.

Yes, this is me asking about thread etiquette.

...
Post away! I know I probably will when I'm in the alpha :D

I don't push any restrictions to this thread and I don't think anyone else will object. After all, I don't "own" it, I just started it, and it's everyone's thread to write on as they please!

I decided against visiting SagA for now. It would've been a complete rush job even if I'd have gone flat out all week, and I doubt I would've gotten there before Monday and the alpha release anyway. A big exploration mission like that it something to savour, I think. Your exploration targets will still be there later and you can only explore them once.

I spent most of my spare time this week mission board spamming and I'm now at exactly 50% combat novice. I'm quite happy with that and think I at least deserve a competent rating given the amount of times I've navigated to a station with a broken canopy. Though in fairness, it's mostly higher rated NPC's who smash my windscreen as I allow myself to be interdicted by those annoying 'enemy alert' people who chase you from system to system all night over a 30k piece of courier date. It's just that you can sometimes get the system feds to come in and help you claim a bounty on a much tougher pilot.

I also made it to 80Mcr so I'm well on my way to buying that elusive Battlestar. Just another 4.920Bcr to go.

I've seen a few of those over the last year, and yes, they are very pretty.

Nice.
It would probably be polite to hide any Odyssey stuff in a spoiler on any existing threads and mention Odyssey in the title in any new threads.

But this is Tyres thread so his rules.

Thanks!

I should be running it fairly well. Phew.

So what do y'all think about the station tour? Looks pretty interesting. Also the idea that we all start out in the Alpha as a new CMDR at first.

I think it'll be fun, and I'm looking forward to it. It's certainly a huge change for ED.

I see that at the bar/viewing area, we can see the ships and the dock.

What I want is to be in my ship and be able to look inside the bar area and see those humans walking around.

As for the black out ship boarding, from the external cam, we can already see the gangway leading up to some door/airlock area. What couldnt they have the player walk up the gangway/stairs and face the door (just like SRV boarding) before the black out?

how does this compare to current requirements ?

Yeah, it's tricky. I think I'll just play it by ear. I'm more of a follower than a leader anyway. I assume anything more related to an Odyssey query will most likely end up in an Odyssey related thread so things will kinda get spread around.

But Tyres is the doorman even if he doesn't want the responsibility.

I just watched the station tour and it looked really good. It gave me an RPGish and Outer Worlds vibe, which I like. Except this is a small snapshot of Elite gameplay whereas Outer Worlds was 50% walking around talking to inane, boring people so it kinda sucked.

I have no idea about the lettering and numbering of graphics cards but my system is more than good enough everywhere else. That gives me some confidence that my card will be okay. Although it's the one thing I haven't upgraded since summer 2019.

They recommend a 1060 (or equivalent) GPU. Mines a 980ti which is one gen behind but that ti may just be enough.

On a side note, I've just procured a new set of cans*. They sound amazing on the 'phone but I need to check them out with ED, They're bluetooth and I've not attempted that kind of connection on my rig. Hmm. a job for Ron.

* I say cans, but they're in in-ear buds really.

I have a 1050ti that came with the Dell a couple of years ago. For all I know, a 150ti could be better since there seems to be no logical naming system for normie customers like myself.

I was gonna try my hand at buying some silver Britannia coins from the Royal Mint tomorrow because I'm prepping, and I suspect from your post that I won't have to make the choice between that and a new GPU.

And I got some new fangled bluetooth JVC earphones from ASDA a few weeks ago. They've literally saved me from going insane on the late shift as I can listen to podcasts through the mundanity of it all. You kids and your weird inventions.

Though I do worry that they will cook my brain.

Bear in mind, the Alpha is not optimised.
Ah... Is there a possibility they will make it more efficient and run on less hardware by the time it reaches actual release, then?

I’ve a later Ryzen than they spec, but it’s a tad slower. It does have 16 cores though, so hopefully they have continued to be as efficient with parallel processing as they have been!

I’ve also got 32Gb RAM, and a GTX1070, so I think I might be ok for the Alpha :)

The "Ti" stands for "titanium" I believe - I think that means that have more stream processors and CUDA cores than non-ti cards. I sound like I know what I'm talking about but I don't really know what either of those things are/do. More powah no doubt.

I got the Sennheiser Momentum TW2's - sold a couple of bits on eBay to afford them :D

More efficient will be welcome!

I think your rig will run it fine.

'70 Cuda. What I think when I see CUDA.
