ANNOUNCEMENT Hello World! Issues with the new forum? Please post here.

In the German Elite Forum all german umlaute (ä,ö,ü,ß,) are not displayed correct. They appear as little black squares with a questionmark inside.

Should now be fixed, Although some other 'special' characters still are not displaying correctly.

I'm slowing getting used to the new forum layout. I quite like the official Elite theme even though I think the orange-red border colour should really be closer to the yellow-orange of the game's HUD. And it took me a while to figure out how to get my signature working again but that now seems OK.

One thing that seems to be missing is the Join date and Post count on the headers of each message. This was quite useful as in many cases it let you make a quick guesstimate as to whether a poster had been present for alpha, premium beta etc. and so adjust any replies accordingly. It was also useful for those "This game is terrible!" postings: if the guy joined a week ago and only had 3 posts, it was easier to ignore ;)

There are also some pros and cons with the new editor. On the one hand I like that it auto-inserts the appropriate BBCode characters when you press CTRL-I, CTRL-B etc. and gives you a CTRL-Z pseudo-undo function (if you don't mind the cursor jumping to the end of the message). Not quite WYSIWYG but pretty good. On the flip side the right-click spell checker options in Chrome seem to be suppressed. I can see typos underlined but I can't select alternatives or add unknowns to the dictionary which is a bit annoying.

Still, early days. I usually hate change but overall this has not been nearly as horrible as I thought it might :D

Can't post from my nexus 5 unless I am in mobile, but my chromebook is fine on the Elite theme.

I have decided that I really like the new forums, particularly on the chromebook.

Is the database not completely moved over yet of our previous posts.

If I go to the profile of a user and select "Find latest posts" I can see todays history (after the forum update), but then there is a huge jump to sometime back in 2013.

Digging up old nuggets of information from devs that way becomes kind of a hassel...or impossible...

BUG: Polish special characters are not displaying properly. See here (and also my signature)

Now, some feedback:

Positives

- I like the new layout, it looks "clean" and tidy. Looks much more professional than the old forums (I was using one of the non-Elite themes for easier reading)

- "Insert Video" function, finally!

- New Frontier Employees and Moderators colouring in avatar section look really cool.

- Find devs' posts - much needed!

Negatives

- Elite theme is very straining for the eyes. Bright letters on a dark background are much harder to read for prolonged periods of time and if you add orange (which is quite an aggressive colour) borders and icons, it all creates a very reading-unfriendly environment. I don't like it at all, it makes the forums difficult to read. Bad choice IMHO.

- Official Frontier theme is much better. It's easier and less straining to read, however I have a feeling that in-thread view has different colours than forums view. When you read a thread the posts are divided by high contrast black borders, which again makes it quite bad for the eyes.

- I think it would be better and more intuitive if "New Discussions" view defaulted to New Posts rather than Activity Stream. Most of the users would be used to that New Posts view and it's also much easier to look at and see which new posts/threads user wants to visit. We don't need to see every single new post contents by default.

- Still no "Reply To All" button in Private Messages. Very inconvenient :/

OVERALL:

I like the layout and modernisation of the engine, however the new themes are really bad and very inconvenient to read. I used to visit the forums very frequently throughout the day, however now I think I'll have to reduce the time I'm spending here, as the forums are really straining for my eyes (I can already tell - just the time I spend on typing this message made my eyes quite tired and I need a break already. I would prefer a mild, pastel theme, like Version 2 (as far as I remember) from the old forums, which was easy on my eyes and allowed me for longer browsing sessions.

Saying that though, I wanted to also say thanks for your hard work on the new forums, as I know that a lot of work went into it! I tried to be constructive in my feedback, so hopefully it will be useful to you.

::EDIT::

Also, the grey title (International Moderator in my case) is barely visible in conjunction with the blue moderator tint when using Official Frontier Theme.

issue that I have found aswell as my feedback.

issues:
Signature links don't work on the image, my current signature should link to another part of the forum but doesn't.
also can I ask that the Federation Logo be changed to this, as it is with the square flag looks a little naff.
all previous posts that contain my signature and are not showing. this needs to be looked at for all other forum members aswell.
another opinion for the forum is to increase the font size for thread titles as when looking at the new style everything just blends into all other text. thread titles are difficult to view at a glance and should really stand out a little more.
when avatar and signature are updated all previous posts are not updated.
not overly keen on the width of the forum as its no different to every other forum style out on the internet.(edit) found the constraint view in the options.)

love that the inbox has been increased to 1000, it was a pin to keep emptying my inbox constantly.
like that avatar images have increased in size.

just adding a test for this purpose

Sorry for the delay, for a while there I couldn't post at all - Teething problems, I suspect.

2) Official Elite theme, HTTPS. Now using the new constrained theme of the same, and the buttons do seem to be click to activate now. I'll give the non-constrained version another whirl and report back. [Edit] Nope, fixed there too.

3) Now being on my desktop instead of my laptop, the color looks a bit less harsh. Definitely looks orange instead of red now. Unless you already went and changed something.

6) Sneaky mods stealing our space! That space only seems to be there for users who have a signature though, if you look three posts above this one there's no such gap (or at least it's smaller) [Edit: Or it WAS smaller until he edited his post. Now the gap has appeared again due to the edit notification]. It would be nice if it could be eliminated somehow for a little less vertical scrolling when reading a thread.

Oh, and a quick note: Just in the time it took me to drive home and check back on my desktop, the forums already feel more polished, with lots of little changes I'm noticing. That's some fast work :)

Thanks for the feedback thus far. The only change i've done on the elite theme is reduce the amount of 'see-through' on the black background.

I'll give it a peek at a point here soon, sounds like something else is showing up that shouldn't be. :)

<p>
I liked the old yellowish one (forgot what it was called). Not a pretty colour, but easy on the eyes.</p>

Reminded me of ACME from Plan9 (The OS):</p>

Edit: New bug: WYSIWYG editor formats the text wrong. (As seen in this post.)</p>

Taking a whack at this little issue now. Am awaiting the forums rebuild to finish.

Having real problems using it on an android cell phone (samsung galaxy s5). I normally use the "opera" browser but that gives me no end of troubles... In "mobile" mode it doesn't give me any buttons eg: page buttons in threads, spoiler buttons etc. If I hit the "full site" link down the bottom it gives me a page not found error. If I change opera's setting to report it as a desktop things seem to work better but the editor won't give me quotes or let me enter text when replying (i tried all 3 editor settings).

Using android's built in browser seems to work better, the full site link works, I can quote and enter text, but so far I've noticed that the " spoiler" buttons don't seem to work in this one.

I'll check this out over on my mobile here soon, I have a Samsung Note 2.

No, wait, I see the user online user list now...

There are currently 17 moderators knocking about...that's not overkill, is it?
This is a bit off-topic to this thread.

Users who are bold named on the forums can be either Employees at Frontier or volunteer moderators. I haven't decided on a happy medium for coloring of usernames or attaching an icon for the respective user groups.

Hi Brett,

I've just noticed when I made two posts in the same thread in a short space of time, it automatically merged them together.

Is there any way to turn that off as sometimes you would want to distinguish between 2 posts? If not could you tell me how long you have to wait to be able to make a second post without it being merged?

Cheers
It's a global setting, I've reduced the time from 10 minutes to 5 minutes. I think that seems to be a bit more sensible.

Trying out different options. I quite like the Hybrid thread display mode but am wondering if the list could stay centered on the currently open sub tree. Bit of pain having to scroll it back to where you were every time you go back to it. Unless some browser respond differently, I am using is Firefox 32.0.3
I'm really afraid to edit those templates on vBulletin. I'm personally not too familiar with how vbulletin formats the code on the backend for hybrid.

Yep, using chrome and editing does this for me too.
Interesting, will poke around a bit with it.

Why are peoples visitor messages being shown under "New Discussions" I would have thought they were messages not public discussions and also maybe private ?
That was a setting that I overlooked today when transferring the settings file over. Got that fixed.

Dev posts icon does not show on the new posts search item. Perhaps there could be a generic staff icon on those posts that have dev entries (even if old - perhaps colour difference in old/new).
Known issue, I plan on expanding the system to the activity page and search page in the future. Search.php page is a jumbled mess of garbage, both on the front end and back end. :/

Thanks, we shall see what others think, but I still wonder if 5 minutes is actually too long? It only happens if you're posting in the same thread and I would imagine that if you wanted the messages merged you would do a multiquote, but we shall see.

Thanks a lot for that one.

It's on my sights to tweak a bit.

As for the infraction history... that should only be visible to moderators and administrators. Non-moderators or admins should not be able to see that. :|

So are you going to fix the mix content protection problem pretty much have to disable it every time i want to post a reply pretty annoying -_- old forum never had this problem.

Hi, i'm still having posting issues. I'm using win8.1 tablet, explorer11 in 'metro' mode.

When i click reply the on screen keyboard won't stay up. I have to use reply with quote, then delete the quote.

Thanks.

Last I heard from IT at Frontier, the forum search rebuild will take around 12 hours to complete.

For the time being, try to not use the HTTPS version of the forums. http://forums.frontier.co.uk should be fine, let me know if it still tosses out errors.

I don't want to be rude but I hate it. I wasn't keen on the look of the forum before but this is horrible. It's like starring at the sun... way too bright.

It's not something I can see myself getting used to over time either; sorry guys.
