Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Noise cancelling headphones (and earphones) exist - and they do work (at least the better ones).
There's also noise isolating headphones (and earphones), and, if it is really bad, certified ear protection with BT receivers (like 3M WorkTunes Connect).

Downside is that all of those need to seal off the ear, either inside or outside, and therefore might be uncomfortable to wear for a longer period.
I think mine are kinda noise cancelling. It can be difficult to hear the guy left of me (though maaaaasks don't help). I work in manufacturing building car seats so the background noise level is quite high. Then they jack up the radio to compensate.
I try to use the earphones sparingly when I'm on a particularly tedious station.
I've played since the day the game was released; I've put more time into the Odyssey alpha -- the last four days -- than I have in the last year. The girl who first brought me to the dance is nice and all, but we'd grown apart.
Sorry to hear that. I hope one day you can reconcile.
The biggest misunderstanding regarding Odyssey is that it's an FPS. It's really not. It's a first-person perspective game, sure, but not necessarily a shooter.
An FPS for nerds then.

I tried remote engineering on the Keelback when I was in Colonia but I don't think I'll use that again. I'm not sure if you'll have to buy a new module when you get to the engineer system.

The flying around part doesn't annoy me though. I can zip around the bubble quite easily nowadays. It's the rare materials that require me to change my gameplay by mining or something which really annoys me. I think I need Cadmium to complete my power plant engineering but it requires mining. I didn't choose mining as a career path. It sucks.
Crystalline Shard to the rescue:

They are "far out" but they are well worth it. In one of the systems out there (they are relatively closely grouped), you can even find a low G planet/moon with some extremely powerful geysers, known to be able to send a SRV into orbit. I didn't reach orbit, but I was pretty high up, and it was one of the most fun things I've tried in this galaxy. Only remember not to go to the geysers before you have gathered the mats you want, because once you drop back towards the surface, it can be a little rough on the SRV :alien:

2% deadly. Hmm. Not as slow as I feared it would be. Still a long way to go though.

Moving on, found another abandoned base: Church of the Path.

Thanks, WIP. That will get me some Cadmium?

I had a pair of Bose QC in-ears a while back and they had ANC. It really worked. Until I trod on one by accident. I think I invented some swear words and phrases Guy Ritchie could use in his next film.

My in-ears I use now for music have ANC and they're a little more subtle but, again, it works.

For the PC, I have JVC over-ears with no noise cancelling. They are closed back though so there's little leakage.

Not exactly Cadmium, but it will give you all the Ruthenium, Yttrium, Antimony, Tellurium, Technetium and Polonium you can carry, which is kind of like going to Alaska and coming back with your pockets full of gold. You can trade those mats to any other raw mats you want at a mat trader, and if you get all of them, they will last for a long time.

Yes. Both my headphones and earphones are JVC. I stand buy them as being really good for the price range.

That's a lot of 'mmmm's. Thanks, Wip. I need an in-game goal so I'll definitely take a look at that.

The biggest misunderstanding regarding Odyssey is that it's an FPS. It's really not. It's a first-person perspective game, sure, but not necessarily a shooter. While I'm sure it will be possible to play it as such, the alpha hasn't, in phase 1, implemented the features that characterise FPS games in general and won't (arguably can't) do so to satisfy the oft strawmanned "FPS crowd." The biggest FPSes are PvP-based and use client-server network architecture. In a game with 20,000 systems, P2P network architecture and a set-in-stone policy of not limiting playmodes for certain playstlyes, fighting in conflicts is always going to be PvE-first, co-op second and PvP a distant third. Additionally, the combat-oriented suit and on-foot conflict zones aren't available yet - they're enabled in phase 2 when, conveniently, a 20LY bubble around Adityan will also be opened up for those who wish to avoid players with combat-focussed gear. Just like the base game, players will be able to avoid combat entirely, should they so wish.

Then there's the exploration content (phase 3) and tying the current live build into the alpha build (phase 4) - the game will still cater to those who only want to fly spaceships, and will still cater to the varying playstyles. There's a lot of new content coming that exploits a rather different way of playing the game and interacting with its systems.
that is pretty much as well my way to see Odyssey - it will add game play but not significantly change it's core features - we can just do some of them in different new ways. I will definitely love poking around in abandoned settlements and see what I can find there - might not be much value-wise, but it is fun to do stuff like this in my books. And of course figuring out how I can stealth kill folks wildering in my territory. Most of them are criminals and have a bounty on them - by scanning their corpses I can get to these bounties - so the combat side is not the worst at all.

While this is definitely the easiest way to fill up with enough raw mats for half a lifetime, it's also quite a treck out to those sites (although, guessing from the number of carriers last time I was out there, there should be ample opportunities to hitch a lift).
If you only need small amounts of the material in question (and it isn't one of the high grade mats listed by above - or Arsenic), you can also get moderate amounts of Cadmium within 100 ly of Sol.
  • go to EDDB -> Bodies
  • top left, Material Finder: select which materila you want
  • bottom left, Reference System: where you are right now
  • bottom right, Extra Column: choose Volcanism
then hit "Find Bodies".
Sort the list by Volcanism (with Volcanism on top, so that might require two clicks on the Volcanism column header).
Fly out there, DSS the planet, land at a Geological site and shoot off and collect the outcrops. Geo sites will hold a sampling of all the materials available on that body so there will be Cadmium. It may not be much - maybe only one or two drops per site - but there usually are multiple geo sites on one body. No mining required here.

Thanks, Ashnak. You are awesome.

And when you say 'DSS the planet', is that beyond using the discovery scanner when I enter a system? Do I have to use a planet mapper?

I ask because I totally suck at using the FSS. I'm a complete brainlet in that regard. It confuses the heck out of me.

Trying to entice more words out of me, eh? 🤔
Now, such a simple plan will never... er, you're welcome! :)
Just givining gratitude where it's deserved, sexy lookin'.
I'm now out here at the Shards. It took me less than half an hour to get here. 23 jumps in an AspX. Now, if I could only remember where the geysers were... Well maybe I should go and stock up the inventory first.
Oh nice. You convince me to take a trip and you don't even know where the destination is.

You are officially less socially adept than Zieman.
I'm now stocked up on polonium. A few more to go.

If you decide to go:

Bring a surface scanner. I don't think you'll need to scan anything, as long as you are close enough. You'll see both bio and geo thingies. The shards are the bio ones. HIP 36601 is a nice system to go to. It has four types of elements. Shooting the shards is somewhat annoying, because they are always on the other side of the thing they are attached to, and you have to shoot them at their "base". Once you hit them, they will fly up in the not existing air due to low gravity, so select them as soon as they start flying, or you'll lose sight of them. Otherwise, it's like shooting fish in a barrel. If one shard is hard to hit, just pick another one. There are more than plenty.

Also some of the sites are on very steep terrain. If so, just pick another site. There are plenty of those as well :)

Edit:

Fun fact. Most of the people going out here fly an AspX.

No wonder. That ship is a great exploration ship. With the new FSD and a booster it easily jumps 75+ Ly carrying a shield and a SRV. It handles very well, scoops like a dream and the view from the bridge is excellent in VR. I'm running a 3A PP with low emission and thermal spread, resulting in a heat level of 16% in SC.

Up to?

When I get back, I've been considering adapting a new role in the game. I'd like to go and shoot the xenophobe CMDRs that attack the Thargoids. Just gank them to destruction with frag cannons and see if it improves my relation with the other non-humans in the game. Who knows. One of them might even show me the way to Raxxla. I'll probably become very "notorious" though. Only tried that once before by accident in a Haz Res. :alien:
