ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Has anyone tried using NVidia's DSR with the Rift? I tried it at 1.5x tonight and ended up with horrific display/sync problems.

Do you have a SLI configuration? Because DSR is not compatible with SLI actually
Disabling SLI and using DSR work fine.
You can achieve same DSR trick by putting the line <SSAA>x</SSAA> in the settings file in graphic folder where "x" is the amount of "dsr"

With the lastest nvidia driver i've been able to pull constant 75 fps at SSAA*2 (nearly 4k res) in elite both in station and asteroids field.
In order to do so i needed to have custom graphic settings some medium and low.

IMO playing with SSAA2 give a far more impressive image quality and feeling thant playing with native resolution and all graphic settings on HIGH.
SSAA 2 eliminate most of the aliasing and give a far better perception of the field of view including quality of percieved textures!

Wow... that looks lovely when enabled... however my frame rate on a 780 ti goes through the floor - very very pretty though! :)

Got my new PC yesterday, as ever taken many hours to tweak windows and get stuff set up ( for example discovering a 26GB hibernation file on my SSD!), but seems like it was worth it for ED, especially with the DK2.

Now i've only done a few tests, probably about 30 mins total due to having all sorts of hardware issues getting the rift to work, but so far i've gotten pretty surprising results compared to what others have been posting. The PC is a 5390k @ 3.5Ghz (overclock keeps failing, might have to send it back) with a single MSI GTX970 Gaming 4G ( MSI have overclocked it a little ), using the latest nvidia drivers, ED beta 2.06. In ED I started with 'high' settings, then disabled AO, AA and set shadows to low, FOV is at max which in the config gives a value of 60. I'm using RivaTuner to report the framerate in game.

With those settings i'm mostly staying at 75Hz in several tutorials I tried - Docking, first combat (shooting the barrels in ice asteroid field), SuperCruise. Occasionally in the asteroid field it dips to 70 fps for a few frames, but that might just be loading more data. Indeed the only times it really drops by any substantial amount appears to be when Elite is loading in new assets (e.g. during system supercruise and approaching planets) and I suspect while that could be improved, it's something that will happen in any taxing game on the rift. Now i'm surprised at these results as from what I'd read a number of people even with sli 970's were having problems and people repeatedly talked about using low settings. I'll have to do some proper testing when i've had more than 4 hours sleep to be sure of these results, but I suspect with a gpu with the performance of a 970 should be able to run most options at medium or high as long as AO , AA are disabled and shadows are set to low or maybe off.

Things get stranger though, as the last few tests involved going into a solo game, where the sidewinder of the tutorials was replaced by my Eagle ( though in the past few days I seem to have lost all my credits, was there a character wipe?) in Azeban and with the nvidia DSR set to x2. Performance was pretty bad initially hovering around 60-65 fps, though after sitting in the hanger for 30 seconds it seemed to settle around 70 -75 fps. I was able to launch and fly around the station and eventually come back to and and generally framerate seemed to stay above 65 fps worse case, whilst everything looked far better due to DSR x2. The best aspect was that i'd actually forgotten i'd set DSR ( first solo game got stuck on black screen) so I feel it definitely had an effect when I caught myself wondering why Azeban station hanger and the Eagle looked so good. I do want to retest using a sidewinder though, as i've found elements such as UI to be greatly affected in terms of visual quality based on what ship you are in, since UI can be closer or further away.

Anyway point is i'm pretty happy with my new system and single GTX970. Going SLI would no doubt improve matters, but i'm going to wait it out for CV1 or maybe details of nvidia's VR Direct. In the meantime over the next week I want to do more testing and try and get some reliable performance figures based on specific set ups as I'm really confused at the breadth of results people are posting with GTX970/980 single/sli.

Oh I also discovered in that you can create your own presets for quality by adding a .fxcfg to the folder <install directory>\Elite\EDLaunch\Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1002\OptionDefaults. In that folder you'll find the high, med, low presets and you can use one as a template to create your own, adding in additional options found in C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\Custom.fxcfg such as OculusPixelsPerDisplayPixel. I've not tested this extensively so unsure if some options from Custom.fxcfg might be ignored and obviously as Frontier updates the beta the options may get superceeded. However from a quick test cycling through high, med, low and my own the graphic options seemed to update correctly. The only bug is that my custom setting comes up with no name as you cycle through them, not sure why.

I finally got to try flying with the DK2 in direct mode this morning - extended mode still doesn't work for me.

Even with the judder, even with everything turned down to low, it is fantastic....

Strangely, I don't have much trouble reading the hologram displays, and the galaxy map is very readable, but a little bit of a fiddle selecting a star as the mouse "focus" is a little bit off... no problem with manipulating the map, and its great being able to look around to see what systems are nearby.

In flight, no-one mentioned that you can look at system objects and their names pop up - very cool :)

Even with those shortcomings, I can't bear to go back to a 2d monitor :D

Did a bit of testing with SLI and DSR and it seems to work but with a problem: the refresh rate is limited by the refresh rate of the main monitor in the resolution used in DSR setting.
So for exemple if a tick 4*DSR (meaning 4k resolution) the refresh rate in the rift goes down to less than 30Hz! this explain the flickering and sync problems.....
There is a solution (pixel clock overclocking) but i dont want to mess with my rift or my main screen refresh rate so i'll wait for an update from Nvidia.
SSAA*2 in graphic xml is the same as DSR*4 by the way so i'll keep using SSAA*2 as it works flawessly on my rig....

I have all the way to 4x, better have SLI 980's or better to even try it. I don't, got maybe 10fps, maybe.
I have twin 780 GTXs, but have twin 980 GTXs on order.

Problem is that I get horrific flicker when I select the higher resolution under the graphics options, in one case I ended up with the graphics options menu still sitting in the field of view even when I was back in the game and in another instance the game was just flashing and turning lighting on and off, it wasn't just a case of a slow framerate.

Think that's a known bug with SLI/Crossfire. I ticketed it, and it's been closed saying they have a raft of improvements to multiple GPU setups coming with beta 3.

What's even cooler about it - you can use this to select targets. Just look at an object (planet, ship, USS, whatever) and press the "target reticule" button to select it. Very practical!

Hi NoiseCrime, I am pleased you are happy with your new MSI GTX970 - same card as mine :)

I think its partly caused by all the variables during testing. IMHO one of the biggest variables is what people consider playability is very subjective.

So in solo, sat in a hanger, with an Eagle I get roughly :
Graphics preset low = 75 fps (rock solid)
Graphics preset mid = 63 fps
Graphics preset high = 56 fps

As you mentioned I can choose high and then turn down some options. I find rather than rock solid 75 fps it does hit 75 fps but a lot more 'floaty'. Some people don't mind that but at the moment personally I am happy playing with preset low, I guess there is no right or wrong. Hopefully as ED optimises and / or Rift direct mode works well - we can have high with rock solid 75 fps ;)

*Ps sorry for the format. Since the make over of this forum I'm having problems using it with chrome.

Hmm, I haven't had the issue before, only with DSR which came in with the new NVidia drivers.

Hopefully it's fixed on tuesday.

Sorry really dumb question.
If we get direct mode working will I be able to have native 75Hz Rift and 60Hz HDMI echo/copy on my TV?

Hi Adam,

I don't think it's a dumb question - just not sure I understand it.

Can I double check you would like the mirror image on your house 'TV' rather than a 60 Hz PC monitor?

I can get my tv to run at 75Hz but that lowers the res. and I don't really want the much playing around unless direct give me a big edge.

I believe I currently run demos with direct mode on my rift at 75 Hz (they show as 75 fps) and the mirror image runs on my PC monitor at 60 Hz fine - so I'm guessing it's the same principle. Someone more technical may correct me ;)

As much as I love the cockpit with the DK2, have now returned to my TrackIR for gameplaying. Nothing I have tried has removed horrendous CA on stars, blurring is an issue, and quite frankly anything more than 20 minutes just makes me sick. DK2 will sit in a box and hope the software / drivers matures a little for this tech. I appreciate its very much WIP, but I really like to see detail in what I'm looking at.

Playing last night with headtracking was much more enjoyable, albeit much less immersive.

Just a funny observation that now that I've ditched my Cobra for an Asp, my Rift play has gotten quite a bit better. The large amount of glass in the Asp's bubble versus the Cobra's cockpit has increased my framerate while out in space, making for a smoother experience. Nice side effect :)
