Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

I recently upgraded to a Ryzen 5800X.
The rest of the system is:
32GB System RAM
RTX 2070 Super
Installed on an NVMe Drive.

I run the game highest settings at 1440P, mostly its about 50 to 90 FPS tho in some places that can get as low as 40, during very heavy battles like the recent Xeno Threat event it can go as low as 30 in the heat of it at the battle, tho that was a big event.

95% of the time the game runs very well for me, its those few outliers that can be problematic but i don't think an level of hardware will cure that, this is a code / optimisation problem

Its not comparable with ED, at 1440P with everything set to the highest level i'm rock solid up against a 150 FPS limiter. absolutely stellar performance.

CIG’s telemetry page would have you averaging a bit less than that:

The average is probably brought down by any time spent in the bigger cities. If you're avoiding those, fair play to you ;)

Was Xenothreat really a big event? I thought they capped servers at 40 and the AI was pretty nonexistent.

Think plenty of guys enjoyed it. Fighting the Idris, co-op ferrying of boxes, a general reason to cluster in one place.

It wasn’t exactly a promising test though for future variants though. No 'dynamic event' elements, the turrets on an Idris shell alone bringing many 2080s down to sub-15fps (while capped at 40 players as you say).

The infrastructure pretty much buckled. And it’s supposed to lift a lot more than that...

I play on XB and 30 FPS is what I been getting for years, next gen is a whopping 60 FPS. However 30 FPS on my system is smooth and playable, 30 FPS in SC is a stuttering nightmare. I still dont understand why that is the case and why it isnt smooth. But then I dont understand game development, but I shouldnt have to, I have paid my money to people who say they do and produce games I can play. I dont need to understand medicine to listen to the Doctor or the internal combustion engine to drive a car, I just need to know who the decent mechanic is and who will rip me off and not actually fix the engine or keep coming back for more money holding my car in the garage as un-driveable.

Edit: Maths tch
30 fps is not bad if it is consistent. In fact my rig, current version of win 10, and old GTA5 do not like each other. Nominally fps is good. Actually game stutters enough to make it about unplayable.

Its wierd, because in SC its not consistent. There are massive lag spikes as well which makes it feel even worse than the FPS suggests.

Meanwhile, playing Odyssey with like 15-30 FPS and i feels a whole lot smoother and a lot better than the FPS suggests.

Its really strange.

Regardless, both SC and Odyssey need a lot of optimization work.

Star Citizen always looks worse than the given FPS readings due to netcode. The servers are struggling to reach single digit frame rates when all the clients are running at 30+ FPS...so you get exactly what SaltEMike was experiencing in the Twitch clips...the game physics start to break...then you get a snap as the servers and client are momentarily in sync then back to chugging along with nothing working until the client crashes or the server throws out a 30K. 95% of all errors and bugs in SC are directly linked to the server performance.

Every action you take in SC is tied to that server performance from opening a door to calling a ship to walking on solid ground, if the game client is running that at 3 times the speed the servers are chucking out...you can see the issue.

Its early days of thread development though ;)

Intrepid has made some fair points, but he's also been off on some points as well and offered up some comments direct from the book of the faithful.

We've seen this before, someone comes in trying to appear impartial and wanting to hear alternate views, but within a few pages the tone changes and more and more the excuses come out for CIG until they are revealed as a true believer.

I'm not saying it will happen with Intrepid, but we've seen the pattern on several occasions.

So, i'll see how these alpha posts develop and what the release version of Intrepid looks like ;)

Maybe he will remain a thread regular, chewing the fat over SC's development, talking about his experiences, being critical as appropriate while also talking about what he likes as well. Like a certain Mole or a few others here.

Or maybe he will go full Novak. ;)

What are your rules for someone being an acceptable contributor to this thread then?

For me very simple ones, don't get banned by forum adminstration :D Like for every other thread. Though SC whiteknights are going to get quite rough treatment here by partakers :) Sovapid, and Mole HD are tolerated and even liked because after all they are pretty honest, and offer quite balanced viewpoints.

What are the rules for not being a "whitenight" ?
