ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

The only thing I haven't tried is a full windows re-install... be back in a bit :)

Hiya - what video card are you using?

I had the same issue on one PC that had a 580, to get video out I had to:

1) Check that the Oculus utility can see the DK2 and check it is set to extended mode.
2) DISCONNECT the HDMI cable.
3) Shut down PC
4) Reboot PC
5) Check that led on DK2 is orange during boot.
6) Log in get to desktop, wait for boot backgroup proccesses (Steam etc) to finish
7) Plug in HDMI cable

When you plug in the cable, you should see your monitor flicker as the card switches to two outputs, and with a bit of luck the DK2 led should be blue with a lit screen.

Cracking idea. If it works with a brand new windows install - as you start adding your old software it will tell you what was clashing. Fingers crossed for you mate!

\o/ IT WORKS!

*dances around the room*

Clean install of Win 8, Nvidia 344.48, OR runtime 0.4.3, Direct X kit and it all popped into life and works fine with ED :D

A big, big, thank you to all that helped try to get me running... you all got me to the point were a complete re-install was the only option - at least we know that should cure anyone that gets the same as me :)

Off for another look in-game :D

Hi KING5TON, at the moment I have an i7-4770, a reference but factory-over clocked 970, and 8 GB of RAM. I bought a small form factor PC that constricts the physical size and power of the GPU, and the reference model is required given the airflow in the case. I could see myself getting a DK2 for now, then maybe getting CV1 a year or two down the line, possibly with a newr, more efficient and powerful GPU. However, I wouldn't necessarily jump on the CV1 as soon as it came out, especially if the 970 wouldn't cut it.

You should be OK for the DK2 with that system.
If it will be enough for CV1 i dunno, we will all have to wait and see.

I don't know if you'll be happy with the DK2 next year when the CV1 releases though. It will be a major step up from the DK2 in probably every way.
The DK2 is amazing for what it is but I would forgo it to buy the CV1 on launch if it's an either or situation.
I knew that I could afford the DK2 now and the CV1 when it releases and to upgrade my GPU if needs be and the reason I bought one, if money was tight I'd be holding off.

Nice GPU! Generally at the moment for gaming so long as it is a K series an i5 is fine. Maybe going forward this may change but for now save your cash. That being said.... So long as it IS a k series running at 3.2 is bordering on criminal. With even a half decent cooler it should do 4ghz and depending on exact model will do anything up to 4.7 .... My i5 2500k does 4.35ghz on a 15quid aftermarket cooler

I missed this reply...sorry and thank you for responding. I went out and got myself a shiny new quad i7 4870 @ 3.7Ghz. My bios doesn't have any fancy overclock options, but it seems to be doing just fine...I have a liquid cooling unit, but it's Dell stock, so not sure I want to push it too hard anyway. My bigger concern is the nice GPU :) which gets mighty, mighty hot. The HDMI cord is starting to worry me that it'll melt. One problem at a time though, eh?

No, if it's a good i5 and you overclock it to 4.2+. Then you wait for cv and upgrade then. Prices and choices will be better. Not to mention that ridiculously expensive ddr4 should go down pricewise ..
Yes if it's one of those dual core things.

I should pay more attention to this thread, but it moves fast...thanks for the reply...I already bought the DK2 (delivery expected this week- 5 weeks)

Count yourself lucky, the dk2 I have here won't come out of 'no signal mode' no matter what I try or do. A constant orange light since I got it 2 weeks ago. :( Mailed Oculus support but haven't heard a word from them. Right now, I have a rather expensive plastic paperweight sitting on the side table. :(

Hi PacalB,

On the BRILLIANT news that Hadron42 has got his DK2 working - you have probably done these but can I please double check if you have been through a similar process to below mate?

1) Have you tested it on another PC? Laptop/neighbour/friend/work etc?
2) Checked its plugged into your main graphics card (not the on board)?
3) Unplugged everything else from your PC like joysticks/webcams etc?
4) Temporarily turned off your firewall/anti virus?
5) Is your DK2 being recognised by the Oculus Config Until?

We are not there yet ..... but as a last resort a full windows reinstall worked for Hadron42.

Cheers
Mark

Thanks for the info :). I could definitely afford both, it's more a case of whether a single graphics card will exist that will power CV1 for about 150W and be less than 10" long :p! I might have to change my whole PC, which I don't fancy doing. I'll wait and see if I'm blown away... I definitely miss the totally different sense of scale :)

Pretty restrictive set of needs there, but the GTX 760 Ti might meet it. It would probably need a displayport adapter and a MB with PCI-e 3. However, all advice is to wait till the CV1 comes out with min specs before buying, at which point those cards will be dirt cheap, relatively speaking.

There's a Micro ITX sized 970 by Gigabyte (if I remember correctly the company). IDK if it'll be enough for CV1 though.

As far as DK2, if you spend $100 on a bottle of wine, $100 on dinner date or anything like that, then get it. You'll definitely get your money's worth if that makes sense? IDK if you'll be "blown away" or not but, it sure changes the game.

Getting my R9 290 to work

I had a heck of a time getting my dk2 to even come out of orange, so I thought I'd just drop a little post as another blurb of info for folks with my particular flavor of card to draw on while troubleshooting.

I have a Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC. The DK2's indicator light wouldn't turn blue for me if I had the rift's HDMI cable plugged directly in the HDMI port on the back of my GPU. I had to move it to a DVI port using the included DVI adapter. After that, everything started working.

It's totally ruined this game in 2D for me. The SA I have is amazing now. :)

As I said earlier, I already have a 970 (EVGA Superclocked, if you're counting)

Hot off the press! And hopefully it won't melt with a tiny gigabyte cooler...not that you'd hear it scream above the noise. :/

Didn't see that, no. But that begs the question of why you'd want to change that out? It's a bit light on shaders and such, but really it's probably going to be more than capable.

God, I wonder if I should try this to get head tracking to work?

Sorry, this is a ridiculously hug thread and, admittedly, I haven't read every post. I saw the 10" restriction and thought a ITX 970 would help. O'well, someone out thre will be excited to see an ITX sized GPU with that power. Don't know if it will be 150w though.

Although it is a pain to ensure you have saved everything you need, and to re-install everything else, I wish I'd done it a week ago :)

I probably won't re-install half the rubbish I had on there....

Even if it doesn't fix it, at least you will know you have eliminated just about all software problems...

Thanks anyway, the thread IS very unwieldy! The point was that CV1 might need an even beefier card, and I don't think one of those exists that would fit in my PC yet :)
