Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

It is an oversight. Doesn't make sense and smacks of laziness.

Next up, we won't get a hyperspace visual for carriers.
A modern reimagination of a gamebook.
Instad of watching the hyperspace tunnel (which is a loading screen anyway but at least it's pretty), you're going to sit in the dark and a narrator will tell you what the ship's doing.

Honestly, they could have made the whole game like that. It would by much cheaper.

"A pirate Anaconda has shot a plasma accelerator at you"
a) Thrust up and roll away (go to page 33)
b) Panic and slam on retro thrusters (go to page 210)
c) Ram them (go to page 74)

turns the page 74
"It didn't work. Your Viper barely made a dent in Anaconda's shield as it was splattered across the asteroid field"
a) Return to your previous dock (go to page 12)
b) Free Sidewinder (go to page 1)

Graphical delivery of interactive elements is overated. Pff. :)

Reminds me of the reams of printout I used up at uni - playing star trek in the early 70's - mainframe time was such fun back then. Coursework - who needs coursework when there are Klingons in your quadrant...

P.S. It isn't the same on these new-fangled monitor thingies, it loses the charm of watching the terminal chatter-away as it prints out the stuff on reams of that lovely lined fan-folded paper- like Grandstand results used to do.

The first job I ever had was as an 18 year old programming BASIC+2 on PDP 11/33s. They had that classic StarTrek game on them, which no one seemed to realise was there - I considered that being paid to do a job where I got to spend my days programming and having an occasional game of Star Trek was a pretty good deal :)

Well damn. I swore to myself I'd never jump my carrier unless I was aboard or moving it to wherever I curretntly was. So, what did I just do?

Good job I fitted that scoop to the 'vette.

Been there, done that.

It was my alt account, docked on the main carrier. The carrier jumped.
The alt seemed to be in the same system?

So obviously a bug.
To confirm the bug to myself, i undocked from the carrier and entered supercruise.
The carrier POI vanished. So yea, bug confirmed. My alt was 250ly behind the carrier.

Luckily, it happened in the bubble and, while docking to random stations to refuel can be time costing, eventually i managed to get back to the carrier.
Phew, so glad that happened in the bubble.

Morals: dont leave the obviously bugged carrier. A full relog should have been the sane thing to to.

Is it easy to make an alt account?
Assuming you're on PC, you need to buy a second "copy" (actually, you only need the account, no need for a real second copy) of ED, and need a second (third, fourth...) email address for the account at FD.

The rest somewhat differs, depending on where you bought the accounts (FD, Steam, Epic) and how seperate you want to handle the accounts. Most separation you get from setting up a(nother) seperate Windows user account, least separation is to log out/log in any time you want to switch accounts in the FD launcher.

I run it somewhat inbetween - all three accounts are on the same Windows user. For the two FD accounts, I have seperate launcher copies (so I don't need to enter my credentials when switching accounts - but I need to update both launchers whenever a launcher update is due), the lone Steam account doesn't know anything about the FD accounts and gets as usual started through Steam. That means I actually have two copies of the game files on my PC - one for Steam, the other for FD. But all three accounts share the same user settings - that includes bindings.

That sounds about as complicated as I was expecting. Thanks for the nerdy response though. I appreciate it.

I was fortunate enough to purchase my first ED account from Steam before 2019. Which means that it isn't tied to Steam like the newer versions are, and can be run without Steam.

Things got really messed up when they changed the launcher to require Steam (or Epic) depending on who you bought your copy from.

I suppose they did this for some sort of financial or marketing reason, but it really complicated the system, and made some upgrades impossible.

So that's what I've done with my 3 accounts -- bought them from FD directly, and left Steam out of the equation. I just run the one launcher, and log out/in of each account as needed. They all share the same bindings and settings, but they produce their own journals and whatnot. EDMC and ED Engineer deal with the multiple CMDRs just fine.

I got my Steam account in November 2019 and the free Epic account one year later.
I'm able to start both of them each from their own launcher desktop shortcuts, no fussing with accounts, passwords, etc.

The only trick is to make sure one launcher is closed before firing the second one.
Since Epic launcher closes by itself after the game is started, i usually open first the Epic ED (launcher closes by itself) then i open the Steam ED (i will usually close the launcher afterwards manually)

Edit: even tho the games are installed in different directories, the home folder for user preferences and settings is common. So the both instances are sharing the same binds.

Yet people keep requesting that FDev remove the safety feature of Carriers not having the capability of plotting and making multiple jumps.

Though I suppose that feature would let FC owners recreate the Red Dwarf stories where they are trying to catch the ship while in Starbug.

One of the things I'm looking forward to in Odyssey is getting out and exploring this stuff on foot. I'm hoping to be able to enter some of the buildings but I'm not sure how abandoned bases are being hendled with the expac.

Questionable if those will be in the same spot though - different method to generate the landscape leads to quite different results in how a certain location looks and feels. So if they are "hand-placed", they might be in a different spot than before, because the former one is eventually not suitable for it.
