Odyssey DLC goes live tomorrow. What's the next big DLC going to be?

I think that for the next expansion they'll pick something in this pool (or a mix of them):

  • Ship interiors with zero-g activities and EVAs
  • Gas giants "landing", with heavy atmospheric environment, fuel scooping and stations floating in their atmospheres
  • Water worlds (and alike) landing, with surface and underwater stations, underwater exploration and maybe an URV (Underwater recon vehicle)
  • Wild Earthlikes, big game hunting
  • Civilized Earthlikes, with procedural generated cities (well, no, they won't pick this one for the next, it will probably come last, if ever)

I was hoping ship interiors and zero-g EVAs won't be the very next one, and that they would focus more on the space/exploration game for the next, but then i realized that zero-G EVAs (like ships wrecks and so on) IS space content, so, id' be happy if they pick that.

PS: And of course i hope they'll use the two to five years before the next expansion to improve the underdeveloped features that are arleady in (and about to come in)

Right. Doomed on the 19th.
No, expanded with the last released DLC on PC on the 19th - then with consoles in Autumn. Non-Odyssey owners on PC get Horizons 'updated' with the somewhat butchered optimisations required to run the game on last generation consoles: Everyone is happy. (I know that is a lie, but whatever!)

From there the most sensible move would be to announce ED2 arriving in 2 years - Much higher PC specifications and for current gen consoles.
That way the current players can have things unchanged, and those who really would like an improved game will get one that leverages the current and future technology well.

I want doom! Doom on the 19th! FDev promised doom!

Is character porting possible?
Asking for a friend...

Next big DLC?
None, of course, this is it, the game is at the end of its development cycle. 🤷‍♂️
It may be that there is no big DLC anymore but they keep adding to the game via expansion packs: e.g. a release of small vessel interiors, then medium-sized ones. Assuming they're happy with the state of the planet-generation engine and the state of the code to enable such expansion, it may be possible.

In response to the OP, what I would like to see are more landable planet types with populated ELWs having sprawling metropolises, with the city layouts matching the style of the relevant controlling power as per the early dev write ups from Michael Brookes.

I'm not your person for DOOM! But I'm sure there are a couple of names from here who would be honoured to provide such support.

I can't see ED going further forward without 'breaking' Horizons specs, which the current playerbase would be up in arms about. The simplest solution is to create a new game.

i expect space farming simulator.

beside a logical follow up after 6 years of plant life in tennous atmospheres and 12 years of biologicals on the horizon, it is also where an odyssee ends.

i wonder whether fdev will be bold enough to call it Elite:Laertes.

(I wrote about this in an another thread.)

There is a solution - have the game switch between “minimal” and “expanded” content. At the minimal level, the game runs on a current Odyssey min spec machine. Content is scaled down, on top of lowering graphics settings. Some content might be lost.

For solo players, they can muddle along. For multiplayer, “minimal” and “expanded” players can’t instance together (except perhaps in space), since they see different content. Yeah, boo hoo, the PC player base is split.

...what's the next big game expansion?

Personally, inspired by the moment when you could finally 'stretch those legs', I imagine an epic "trailer" moment when CMDR could walk land in the green fields filled with grass and flowers, disembark, hear singing birds, take the helmet off and inhale an earth-like world air, gaze into sunrise above the horizon where ocean meets the blue sky, turn around, and walk towards the big futuristic city lights with the spaceships traffic above it.

What would you like to see as a next expansion of the game world?

I'm hoping for something related to spaceships, the entire reason I play ED, rather than even further removed. Hopefully there will be an alternative to ED by then if not.

Elite: V - The Exodus... The overwhelming Thargoid incursions into Human occupied space forces those left alive to seek new, safer, surroundings and rebuild.

They could give something for everyone - literally - with building a new 'bubble' (Colonia, possibly), intense combat both against the invaders and the remnants of the "power" supporters trying to quash their lifetime enemies and establish a 'new order', massive exploration requirements, mined material demand and the end of the stranglehold engineers have held on pilots for generations.
There you go, even a basic storyline for the new game...

Wow! Let's just see how the next 72 hours go...

I have no idea. There is a lot of "filling in the gaps" they have to do first imo. But, to play along I would say a major rework of some core elements, then ship interiors, and expansion to multicrew.

Probably some kind of planetary/colony management using something akin to JPE/Planet Zoo which since they have like 3 games like that already it would actually be easier for them since they have the experience at making it for one, and possibly even could repurpose some of the code, depending on what improvements to the Cobra engine they are going to drop in the meantime do.

Not bad.... Not bad at all. +1

That's not simple at all - even without further major patches, they'd still have to support ED indefinitely in terms of servers, support, content, etc. (Or they could stop doing that, and have exactly the same outcry, more or less, as if they'd raised the system specs for it, so it's not like it gets them anywhere)

Odyssey is coming out about 4.5 years after the end of Horizons (or about 5, on consoles). Add on that sort of time again for the next one, and the hardware question probably looks different anyway - plus, there's plenty of things they can do which either won't increase hardware requirements at all or won't increase them for people doing the existing gameplay.

I know I sound like a broken record, but this is why I would like to see some sort of crafting system in this game, and the ability to cultivate the fleet carriers as being usable as "colony vessels" where a player could use the FC's facilities to work on mining, building and securing various resources to build more permanent colony sites, that in turn can be upgraded. It would be cool if a player or rather player group could build out, with time, a full fledged system that is pretty much the same as bubble systems. But even if that was too much and we wouldnt be allowed to build stations, then FC's could serve that function, and if we were limited to one colony per player, even that could STILL be a huge game changer and allow players to create mini bubbles dotted around the galaxy, think like the DSSA array on steroids.

If you had that kind of game loop involving FCs, plus making trit easier to mine, you would break up the FC spam in the bubble pretty quickly and quite permanently too.

We see things our own way, may occasionally disagree a little ;) But have ideas of directions the game could go - which is excellent!
I like those ideas too (y)
