ANNOUNCEMENT Odyssey Update 2021

Well you said it's on their end, but doesn't seem like it
Actually it depends on where the game is bought; many people here bought directly from Frontier and want to keep it that way. He mentioned Epic Games Store, which in my experience can be a slog sometimes. I'm on 300Mbit connection. Steam leads in download speeds that's for sure, but for Elite you need to create separate steam logins for each frontier account. And because they didn't give us save slots (a wise nickel-and-dime business decision apparently, because people bought up to 7 "alts" for them and family) you need a different email for each steam account to be linked with fdev account or something like that... IDK. It's a PITA.

TL; DR: downloads vary depending on store ED is bought and the location of the client downloading.

Yes, and on which servers FDev is routing through locally. Download times differed for same-spec machines in differrent locations on normal patches let alone this 50+GB monster. Boasting doesn't help solve the problem.

Why are you praising this? It literally looks worse than Horizons did.
Not from where I'm flying. I fly both PC and Xbox One X so I can see the difference; monitor has PBP. Quote must be true, "youth is wasted on the young"; never heard so much whining about what always happens, when in fact, once the initial implementation runs it's course no one will long for "the good old days" - mostly because the game, emphasis on game, is just plain better. And I did not want or need space legs per se; might be time to buy a new PC -- I'm going to, and probably before I get the new X Box Series X.

Here's a good thought, at least from my perspective/perception:
Conclusion? I think I'll play Odyssey, but stick to my ships (playing like Horizons) for the next few months until this thing settles down a bit.

I have to say I like the looks of new graphics. Darker skybox is glorious with stronger contrasts, stars themselves look better, and planets...well now those useless iceballs are my favourite :D

I cannot get the Detailed Surface Scanner to work in Odyssey like it did for me in Horizons. No matter what changes I make to the key bindings it's unusable.

well, i like the idea of it. Can't say if it's actually good though because the game has been unplayable since yesterday. Frequent disconnects and an awful lot of bugs in there. The reported issues seem to be mostly ignored (3 confirmed today, the rest has not been touched yet).
Please fix at least the server issues asap

I have got a GTX 1050,
I5 7400 CPU 3.00 Hz,
16 GB Ram
So not in any way suitable to play this
I could get away with Ultra, but found high was best in Horizons, and now have to drop it to Med and so far the only place that it was struggling was in the fires in the tutoral.
Cant test anything else as I am in the middle of nowhere and cant move my carrier.
So I have no complaints so far apart from the carrier one.

Edit: The Detailed surface scanner has worked without any issues.

Dont know how much you've actually played, but all the planets I've been to so far definitely have more detail and definition to them; so I dont buy that it's "literally" worse than Horizon.
Definitely, there is still work to be done. i landed on one yesterday that was SUPER shiny. like it was covered in nail polish lol. id also like to see more atmospheric effects as well. overall, i like it.

Oh dear god, using VR to start with is a big no-no....forget this walking about , get me to my ship! will try later in non VR mode when I've calmed down, very uninteresting walk through you have to do.

Orange Sidewinder X 13...both Odyssey and Horizons. I will have to give FD credit today for giving my keyboard a workout, even if it didn't do a dang bit of good.

What, I downloaded mine with my full 1000/1000 connection and was done in roughly 6 mins
1000/1000 ? I'm jealous :D

On PS4, no more Planetary landings possible + on all platforms carriers are stuck.
I can understand that it's never easy when something new comes out but was this stress-tested enough before release?
I also feel that "we" the players (a small percentage ) are a little to blame also, we wanted it, the legs soo badly.
It couldn't get here fast enough, Fdev had a small % complaining about we want this, we want that.
Maybe Frontier gave in too soon without even being ready for it.
It's better sometimes to say no than say yes and it turns into a no.
But now you have the entire player base on your back, it's broken.
Better communication is needed here.

I've purchased Odyssey for 2 of my 3 E:D accounts. I took it for a test drive today as an Explorer and I'm very disappointed. I'll not be looking for a refund as I know the majority of issues raised will get fixed, sorted and stabilised in time but I have lost a certain degree of trust and confidence in Fdev. With over 6000 ingame hours all I can say is that, for the foreseeable future at least, I will stay with Horizons and wait patiently for Odyssey to be fixed. Unfortunately, this new paid DLC is unplayable for Explorers. Space looks so dark... The appearance and profile of the galaxy looks so dark... Ship interiors look so dark. The standard non-bold red text of the in ship UI can hardly be read in Vive VR. The only workaround is to increase its brightness to full, which makes it readable but blurry. Combine that with a cluttered and awful looking user interface of the Galaxy Map and also a Detailed Surface Scanner that is broken and unusable, all I can say is "what are you playing at Frontier?" Do you have anyone in house that really plays Elite Dangerous. I doubt that is so; even the Community Managers display little or no game skills. You really shouldn't be releasing the new DLC in this state. Perhaps you should consider employing some of the best most highly skillful players in these forums who would happily validate gameplay during development; Indeed, I am sure many here would jump at the chance. It's a good thing I know that these issues will be fixed over time. Had I been a relatively new player I may have requested a refund straight away. All of us Old-Timers know you can better than this Frontier. Unfortunately, it seems you have put acquisition of wealth before quality... Grumble over.
