Odyssey Progress

Incidentally, I'm experiencing a number of server disconnections. Is anyone else experiencing that, and/or is this one of the issues being fixed?
The amount of purple python and blue cobra errors I have experienced in the last week, even prior to launch has been insane. In one day I had over 30 purple python errors, and 11 Blue cobras.

That's nice and all, but Frontier's MO with Elite pretty much since release has been that very same old song. Maybe do an alpha for bigger updates, some cheap belly-rubbing changes after feedback, fix it until MVP status (i.e., until it kinda runs for most remaining influencers), shove it live, and then go silent after one or two hotfixes and lame excuses about how you're taking problems "seriously" (which everyone knows it marketing talk for "sucks to be you") and "we'll fix it we swear". Broken technology, still a bare-bones "experience" with little to do other than stare at balls in space and now more randomly scattered stuff on those balls, unmotivated additions with no respect for the rest of the game, controls that got worse with every new thing you tried to bolt onto them, multiplayer that's so bad and actively hostile you'd best remove it completely, and by and large an utter lack of care for the product. And then you have the gall to monetise that whole steaming mess with microtransactions.

Years back there was that little glimmer of hope when you announced that you'd prioritise work on major quality improvements. What really happened in the end? No fixing problems, that's for sure. Some hare-brained power fantasy additions, but apart from that, radio silence for way too long while you went away to glue a FPS module to a spaceship game with so much squandered potential without touching on any of the existing issues, but instead simply bringing the same issues to a smaller scale.

I applaud Frontier Developments for being so consistently bad at a single project for so long, any sane studio would have written off and buried such a dumpster fire years ago and tried part two or moved to something else entirely.

I mean they kinda did, moved their competent guys onto Jurassic World Evolution

Two hours now since hotfix 2 and twitter, steam and these forums are awash with players unable to login. I reached out on twitter but nothing, @David Braben is there any news on the issues? We understand there will be problems, we know these take time to address. So many of us have come from similar tech back grounds or understand why these things happen but to leave loyal fans in the dark for two hours with no word just isn't good form.

All we ask is that a dev take a few minutes to post even if to say that it's going to take all night to resolve, any news is better than none and the community always responds better to honesty. Please David Braben, as a fellow gamer and responsible developer don't keep us in the dark.

o7 everyone

I'm really sorry, but I had to do this.

Greetings Commanders,

With our first hotfix now released and another one arriving very shortly, I wanted to take a moment to address the wider community feedback and reports regarding performance issues, server outages, and bug reports within Elite Dangerous Odyssey.

First and foremost, I would like to apologise wholeheartedly to those who have been suffering from these problems. I would like to reassure you that we take these issues very seriously and that they are our top priority and focus.

Our second hotfix will be released very soon, which we hope will address more of the reported bugs and bring further stability improvements into the game.  We will continue to work on updates which will resolve more bugs and improve stability further.

Some of our players are reporting poor performance on machines where we would expect the performance to be good, and others are saying it is fine. We are trying to get to the bottom of this. I have been playing on my old home machine from 2014, which has an Intel i7 Extreme CPU and a GTX 980 GPU, 16 Gb RAM, playing at 1080p full screen at Ultra. I was doing this so I could have a good feel for how the game was playing on older hardware, and I used this same machine during Alpha. I have also been playing on a high spec 2021 dev machine.

I would like to thank you all for your patience and support. The Elite Dangerous community has always been at the heart of the game. We understand that there are a number of players who have had problems accessing and playing the game and I can assure you that we are focusing fully on improving this for those affected and communicating with you openly and regularly about how these issues are being addressed.

Thank you all,

David
LOL!
save your hollow excuses for your shareholders, maybe they still believe you

Few hotfixes are not going to cut it. The core gameplay of the new stuff is done really poorly from the get go. The peformance issues and bugs are just an icying on the cake. A really thick layer of icying. The main problem is that the gameplay of newly added stuff is below mediocre. It plays like a cheap game from the year 2000.

It's nice to hear from the man himself.

Hopefully, I can stop worrying about the game falling over any time I try to do an odyssey mission.

Because the actual on-foot combat Missions are fun! Actually Fun! And Hooning around in an SRV shooting bad guys is a Hoot! And Missile-ing them from above in a Cobra is an absurd feeling of Joy! And the Artemis Suit's Jump booster is a Thing of Beauty!

Of course there are still niggles that I might complain about at a later date, but once the game is stable, Performance be damned, I'm going in again!

How can you start ED without Odyssey..... It has made ED unplayable after todays update ,stuck in my srv cannot recall my ship to get in it and leave , it hovers above me and none of my controls work.

Please stop treating customers like cheap QA engineers.

There is no shame in saying we have failed. There is, in hiding the truth.

Every release : Dangerous/Horizon/Beyond/Odyssey was a fiasco to me, you clearly haven't learnt from past failures.

To me this is a clear indicator that you should look at the company's internal processes, and take that as an opportunity to impove.

Your and FDev's reputation 's on the line ...

Thanks for making the game I imagined playing with vector graphics too many years ago.

Thanks for the update. I'm currently playing 2160p on 1070 (not Ti) and perhaps surprisingly this has always sufficed in not just Elite Dangerous but all games, with med-high details and none of that blur and DoF fx stuff.

Both ED and then HORIZONS has always played BEAUTIFULLY on 4k/2160p. Unfortunately the trade off I made when I grabbed this highly affordable & energy efficient 43" 4K TV I'm using as a monitor 2y ago (with 1 tweak it loses all input lag) was that I knew that I'd either be able to play games natively on 2160p or not at all (because 1080p and even 1440p look like absolute vaseline obviously) so I'm very much hoping that Frontier will also look into the nVidia 1xxx series hi-resolution/4K performance given the scarcity of GPUs right now and probably this whole year. Honestly I think the 1070 should be able to take whatever Odyssey throws at it and still churn out an almost steady almost-60fps performance like Horizons does with ease (ie low utilization & power) even at these high resolutions but I'm completely at your mercy.

I can afford to set settings to Low-Medium but bc of screen constrainst I just can't run at anything other than native 2160p. I can also afford a bit choppy on-foot performance if it means the Ship-Space performance performs anything like Horizons did. Thanks for all your hard-work creating and building out this beautiful game and good luck!

Thanks! Dreaming for this since Commodore 64 version. Remember that with just reading the original manual make me travel to distant worlds on those ships described there. Was a kid with a C64 but sometimes that same felling is still there while playing. And I will be always grateful for those good memories of my childhood. I really hope that they will fix the actual problems and is good to have a better communication with the fans like in the early days of this new Elite.

ps : Using an i7 4770K @ 4.0 with 1080 GTX HDD and 32 GB Ram. Having quite good experience. Did not try yet the ground conflict zones. Some problems with planet rendering and servers.

First of all Thanks for Odissey. I really appriciate your hard work to give us a very special release, in a word: emotional. Unfortunately something went wrong and it’s normal when a 50 Gb update rappresent a revolution for the entire game. I would appreciate if you resolve the performance problems for those who have a med-spec Pc hardware. I tell you this because most of the players with old machines would want update their PCs, but at this moment the market for the graphic cards is not a good moment due to high prices and the avalaibility too. So resolve the performance problems to let us fly, walk and combat in our preferred game ever. Thanks. Italian community really loves Elite!
