New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

Sadly this is the truth of it. We as as community are only dollar signs.

I've read a lot of bad stuff about Odyssey and I remain optimistic for the moment and will give it my time for a while yet.

But I just lost a whole heap of enthusiasm for the exploration trip I am just about to go on.

So that example is really in-your-face for sure. I've been flying a good bit out (about 3,000LY so far) and I have not really noticed an example as extreme as that but I'm largely landing on atmo worlds. There is a point in orbital cruise that it doesn't often look good on most all of them. I've run into a large variation of terrain and canyons, mountains and such and not too many copy-pasta surfaces so blatant. That image is for sure concerning and frankly I wish I hadn't seen it because it will be impossible for me not to be 'looking' for it now.

I wonder if they'll consider keeping Horizons separate, on a separate server. No need to continue to add content to it, just leave it as it is, for those that want to put this sorry affair behind us and live in that gameworld.

Heck at this point, they can keep my EDO money, if they just leave my Horizons alone, and don't merge it with EDO or discontinue it.
I want to believe that they didn't have enough time to fully implement the new tech for "release". Until that, Horizons shouldn't be touched anyway.

I think the reason that there hasn't been any announcement made for new console support is because [all] console support will be quietly suspended and then ended.

... and to think I actually moaned when in Horizons, FDev horribly cut'n'pasted the dirt and dust smudges on the Asp Explorer cockpit screen (among'st others but most noticeable on the Asp E)... just a minor 'crime' compared to this 'travesty'.... there is just no point playing EDO from the perspective of 'eye candy'... stick with Horizons until the final stab-in-the-back coming this autumn/fall to a PC & Console near you!

HOLY 🤬

If you fancy depressing yourself a bit further, watch the video, there's a bit in it that shows canyons you can see from orbit, turning into flat land as you get closer, they are in fact, fake.
That's really strange, because so far every canyon I've flown too was actually, indeed, a canyon. I did see in OA's recent video that he believes a large number of planets are "bugged" and maybe this is the problem with these examples.

More than a year since I left Horizons.
Bought Odyssey for the new features of the planetary tech. I've followed development, and I was really looking forward to it. I still trust Fdev to fix this , even if they
have to rework a major part of it, but I can't hide my dissapointment really. It's not only about repeating patterns, but the rounded mountains or weird height maps, and non-plausible textures as shown in previous videos.
I hope Fdev make some official comments about this soon.

That looks much less interesting..

People are very good at finding patterns.. this system is not obfuscating it well enough.
Recognizing and identifying patterns is one of our brains' most primal instincts.

The overall elevation differences in Odyssey are terrible - canyons are now woefully shallow, and mountains nowhere near the heights scaled in Horizons. It's removed much of the fun in flying low over surfaces, and now it makes a lot more sense given it's all just copy/paste of the same tiles. I guess they only stretch so far :D

"Yeah, so that texture won't cover a 10km surface. Lets just reduce all height to within a 8km range and just get rid of those epic mountain ranges. Leave the POI on the floor - nobody will notice."

Sad

Same here. I've not flown into a disappearing feature yet, but obviously they are out there. That was awful.
