New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

That interview does not fare well in light of the release; I liked this bit in particular:

=====

Q: Would you say your approach for Odyssey is more accurate?

Yes, we've got the layers going from the top level down. We're trying to get the detail in all the way in, and represent it from a distance, so you can see the detail from further out which makes a lot of difference. The system we made for Horizons was good for Horizons, I'm very proud of what the team did and the results you can get from it. I still from this day enjoy looking at screenshots on Twitter and lurking in streams! But to look forward to whatever comes next for Odyssey, I wanted a system that was robust enough to handle things without having to do another remake of any of the tech, that's why it's changed and we have all that detail.

Spoke to soon, perhaps?

what makes you think these are hand made pieces? They’re all subtly different. This looks to me more like a case of an algorithm without sufficient entropy.
Chill out and keep showing Frontier examples of the problems including what the location of the planets are so they can look at them and m I’m sure they’ll fix it.

sure they shouldn’t have launched like this... but whatever, deal with it. It’ll get better.

Excellent answer.
Really professional

I think there is a difference between "shouting" and pointing to something politely and backing it with some facts.
I've not checked the interaction between that user and Dr Kay, however I'm well aware of others respectfully discussing this with her and being politely asked as in the image above to please use the official issue tracker, and not being blocked. I imagine there was a reason that person was however blocked.

I done nothing. Simple question and link to this thead.

Hate to say it, but this isn't going to get fixed quickly. Perhaps (perhaps) they could revert to the Horizons planet tech whilst keeping the surface bases and atmospheres?

It's frustrating because what I saw in the alpha did look better, and we were told "don't worry, this doesn't have all the new planet tech in yet!" which we took to mean "it will be even better!". But it turns out it was a massive regression. At one point surfaces looked pretty damned good - the rock scattering was a big improvement. But somewhere before release someone panicked and over compensated for SRV driving being too hard, and reverted that improvement too.

The one crumb I'm taking from this is that the actual surface bases are really well done. Whoever did that - congratulations, your team nocked it out of the park. The rest of the project is a mess though.
I don't know if that's even possible at this point - my understanding is that ODYSSEY constitutes a largely new code-base as the old code was too brittle to really move forward with these kinds of changes.

Thanks for posting this. Having now read what Dr. Ross said carefully, alarm bells should have been ringing. Now we know exactly what she meant when she said:

"For Horizons, that terrain is generated entirely mathematically. There was a lot of effort put into representing the kind of shapes a hill or canyon makes, just using maths."

"For Odyssey... we're talking up 100km worth of terrain for example, which are now generated offline into terrain shapes that we know are formed."

Cause planets generates by textures now, not by noises in Horizons. Props - planets looks more realistic and variety. Cons - this "patches" repeated, coz they are handcrafted (like Star Citizen planets). I dunno why people prefer Horizons planets, very plain, all the same and CANYONS (only interesting places to visit).
