New Planet Tech is KILLER of Exploration (all terrain is tiling/repeating/not procedural/random)

The buck stops with Braben. His developers are only given so many resources and time to implement things. They do their best.

Its about money money money, and how to milk us for as much of it as they can. The remit was obviously; cut corners, drop ideas a b and c, skimp on this and that. And do it as quickly and cheaply as possible to release a minimum viable product. Ramp up the hype, get those pre-orders in, and bank the cash. Job done.
Sadly this is the truth of it. We as as community are only dollar signs.

I've read a lot of bad stuff about Odyssey and I remain optimistic for the moment and will give it my time for a while yet.

But I just lost a whole heap of enthusiasm for the exploration trip I am just about to go on.

What I'm about to show you will be the final straw in cementing the new planetary tech system into a failure.

I remember Dr Kay Ross stating on stream that their procedural heightmap system made use of handmade terrain that would then be randomized across. I was worried when I heard this.

Check this out - I'll let the images speak for itself:

Literally all terrain features both from high orbit to low orbit are repeating, hand crafted, and break every little bit hunger for exploration. There is absolutely no desire to go down and explore since all you're looking at is the "randomly" organized set of hand crafted height map bits the developers have made.

Horizons gives a REAL sense of wanting to go and explore. Find planets with unique features.

Planets in Odyssey are no longer unique. They are just reorganised sets of the same features.

These planets were designed with one goal: look acceptable from an on-foot perspective or when looking from a twilight perspective with a setting sun for the atmo effect.
What planet is this please?

Hate to say it, but this isn't going to get fixed quickly. Perhaps (perhaps) they could revert to the Horizons planet tech whilst keeping the surface bases and atmospheres?

It's frustrating because what I saw in the alpha did look better, and we were told "don't worry, this doesn't have all the new planet tech in yet!" which we took to mean "it will be even better!". But it turns out it was a massive regression. At one point surfaces looked pretty damned good - the rock scattering was a big improvement. But somewhere before release someone panicked and over compensated for SRV driving being too hard, and reverted that improvement too.

The one crumb I'm taking from this is that the actual surface bases are really well done. Whoever did that - congratulations, your team nocked it out of the park. The rest of the project is a mess though.

... and to think I actually moaned when in Horizons, FDev horribly cut'n'pasted the dirt and dust smudges on the Asp Explorer cockpit screen (among'st others but most noticeable on the Asp E)... just a minor 'crime' compared to this 'travesty'.... there is just no point playing EDO from the perspective of 'eye candy'... stick with Horizons until the final stab-in-the-back coming this autumn/fall to a PC & Console near you!

I had a sneaky feeling all wasn't well when they said not all the new planetary tech was finalised in the alpha. Really? I mean - you've been working on this for years, right? You're replacing the flagship feature that this game is known for - and you're still working on it a few weeks before release? I would have thought this would have been nailed down months ago, and only green-lighted after a thorough QA analysis to confirm there were no obvious regressions compared to Horizons.

They shouldn't touch Horizons at all.
I wonder if they'll consider keeping Horizons separate, on a separate server. No need to continue to add content to it, just leave it as it is, for those that want to put this sorry affair behind us and live in that gameworld.

Heck at this point, they can keep my EDO money, if they just leave my Horizons alone, and don't merge it with EDO or discontinue it.

I hope this wasn't done to keep system requirements in check, especially for the old consoles. I was a PS4 cmdr myself and still don't understand why they haven't made the jump and announced Odyssey only for PC/PS5/XSX. Would've saved them lot of headaches. And there are similar examples, e.g. D3 got rid of PS3/X360 with the Reaper of Souls addon.
