Help Frontier with a positive review?

I spent a lot of time typing this for another thread, but it was closed from under me (I'm not liking all the censorship going on lately). So I'll post it here. It's slightly out-of-context, but basically it's my response to those who are saying, "Chill out, it's just a video game."

---------------------------------------------------------------

I agree with you, [people who say 'chill out, it's just video game']. But I also side with consumers who feel like they've been ripped off. If somebody pick-pocketed my wallet and took $40 from me, I would rightly feel upset. Frontier knowingly releasing this DLC as a finished product is borderline criminal, in terms of the laws of consumer protection. Granted, they are just "borrowing" $40 rather than outright stealing it (assuming they eventually fix Odyssey as they are promising), but the right thing to do would to be tell people this up front and give them the option to "loan" Frontier that $40 rather that being deceived out of it.

Said another way, I think a lot of people don't see this simply as game that doesn't work, but rather as a powerful corporation abusing its loyal customers.

I'll also point out that many of us are "expressive" behind a keyboard, kinda like Shakespeare but obviously of a different caliber. Just because we write "strong" opinions here in the forum doesn't mean we're literally going to storm Frontier headquarters and burn it down. Even all these, "I'm calling my lawyer right now!" folk are just probably blowing off steam (though it does make them sound a wee bit ridiculous). I draw the line when it comes to serious threats like violence, posting employee addresses, even "cancel culture" mob demands - this is all terrible and wrong and must be avoided at all costs.

Me personally, I'm totally calm about all of this, but I do think Frontier is getting its deserved comeuppance, and I think that's a good thing. They need to change their practices, and if this (negative reviews on Steam and the forum) is what it takes, good. Adversity drives evolution.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Addendum - to this OP's point, if you do enjoy Odyssey and it's working great for you, than by all means, please leave a positive review. Just make it "real". I personally ignore any review that sounds like a letter from Romeo to Juliet. You can like a video game without making love to it, and if you must make love to it, get a room!

Hello fellow commanders!
When you love Elite, go to the Odyssey Store page and leave a positive review! No need for a long feedback. Your positive rating counts.

With this post I am trying to reach out to one of the most solid player bases... the explorers!
A game relies on reviews... good reviews.
And btw: I am not a dev. I spent the last 24 hours trying to get into game and ending up with the orange sidewinder error. But I experienced 5 hours of Odyssey and I see it IS (and will be more in future) worthwile new content!

Despite all the hate and criticism which is to be expected as a reaction to this suggestion, make up your own mind! Have you enjoyed playing Elite so far? And do you think Odyssey will prove to be a successful improvement within the next 4 weeks? Then write a positive review... this is when Frontier needs us!
Completely agree! Too much "colourful invective" about the whole state of Odyssey. I truly believe, down to my very bones, that Frontier are doing all they can to sort this out. There is absolutely NO empirical evidence to the contrary.

Oh, I don't think it's Malice, just gross incompetence which is almost worse IMO.

Steam holds EDO at about 30% positive reviews.
Or 70% negative reviews
Depending if you see the glass % full or % empty

And IMO it's kinda deserved
  • Server stability was bad, seems ok-ish at the moment
  • Gamebreaking bugs, reported in alpha are in the release - stuck on Apex or crashing in an EDO location can give one perma Orange Sidewinder, requiring the support to move characters by hand (all the praise for the support team, but they cannot simply handle all the thousands and thousands of tickets...)
  • planetary tech is lacking - doesnt seem to be fully implemented/working
  • the gfx darkness bug
  • the performance issues
  • the lacking UI, especially outfitting galmap and sysmap
  • materials bug (overwriting bug or crashing bug when bins full)
  • and many many other minor bugs (wandering wakes, station approach indication wrong, market prices reversal and many many others)

This is simply not the case. Good reviews for badly implemented games only serves to seed complacency and acceptance of badly implemented content. If you actually love Elite, the best you can do is to show that you do not accept whatever comes and leave a negative comment. This is your only way of signalling that the state of the game is not acceptable apart from not buying or refunding your purchase.

The best words to describe the OP are "Stockholm syndrome".

I made up my mind

Odyssey is utter garbage nowhere near worth $40 in it's current state, and negative reviews are well deserved.
Leaving positive reviews for odyssey in it's current state is stupid and will allow FDev to release same half-baked updates as full products in the future, thinking people will just eat it with no questions asked.

Doesn't warrant a positive review at any level.

ANY level??

Trouble is (OP) most people who might like to think they're 'responsible consumers' offering 'constructive criticism' apparently in the form of jumping up and down on the (whole) dev team and spitting their dummies, doesn't do anything to constructively improve the game, it just makes people leave, not wait for updates but go, which hurts the game (didn't you want the game to be better?)

That's what happened to Star Wars imo. Fans so hated on the creator - for his highly creative prequels - he decided he'd had enough, folded and went fishing. Good for him I say and what did everyone else win? Mary Sue Palpatine Skywalker! So given that experience, unless the idea really is to bring ED down, it doesn't hurt to tone things down a bit. If the idea really is to make ED:O better why not stick with the people who gave you ED:H? Not even for ONE week???

Especially given framerate probs, most people here possibly too busy posting here to have really got to grips with EDO yet imo but I made up my mind and - no matter the OP is an idea that's always going to backfire. No matter what, in fact - I like Odyssey, a lot. Nothing good on ANY level? Tried playing the game for a few hours? My guess is it never happened. I played a lot over the weekend with good performance and I'm still uncovering basics.

@Heinz Volmer

Odyssey does not warrant a positive review right now. It should not have been released in its current state, and from my point of view (VR) it's no different to Alpha, except that Alpha was clearly labelled as such.

Elite has had many buggy releases but this is the worst by far, FD need to learn that this is not ok.
They will fix most of it, but with the extensive changes there will be many small bugs that will add to the growing 'becomes a feature' pile, and currently we've also lost years of QoL improvements which I'm not convinced we will get back.

Even tho i stand by the things i wrote above, i'm still sticking with FDev.
I have 2 EDO preorders (Steam and Epic) and, at least for the moment, i have no intention to refund.

But we should not be afraid to call a bad release, especially when gamebreaking bugs were reported in alpha and went by in the release
I spend more than 2 hours in a looping Apex Taxi on Saturday morning/noon, and i was not able to log in game due to Orange Sidewinders for almost half a weekend - thanks to support (once again) for manually moving my toon in a station so i could login back again on Sunday evening.
And these 2 bugs were (hopefully) solved today in hotfix 3.

However, i guess we will be stuck for way more with the bad UI, the performance issues and the unfinished/bugged planetary tech.

Aye, which is very much the point isn't it; bugs in release bad .. hotfix, better. Definitely sympathise with the APEX bugs, I rescued a Commander who'd been stuck for 24 hours using multicrew to blow up his (my) taxi yesterday

But that also makes a point. Using the terrible - the useless and widely maligned but actually workable multicrew - not intended for it I was still able to effect a rescue. I bought an Adder, same as APEX ship, so maybe it was me who holo'ed into his Adder to pull self destruct or ejection lever. It's still sandbox, same as Fuel Rats get you to log out to preserve Oxygen, still co-op and still player agency, no support required.

I just get the feeling that most people suffering bugs - which I do have total sympathy for - haven't had enough unbuggy active game time to really get a grip of the sandbox potential. So for all the UI oddities - which evolved MULTIPLE times in Horizons - a critique on bugs is not the same as a critique on the game when working as intended. Imo.

Based on reports from the Hotfix3 thread, Apex taxi are still not fixed. At least not for ringed planets, which was exactly my stuck scenario 😒
