Elite Dangerous prides itself on its degree of realism and immersion. Meanwhile in Odyssey....

They have to link the crafting into ground missions somehow. Of course I totally agree all the silly comedy stuff needs to go, but surely loot in some fashion needs to be one method of acquiring the parts and schematics?
Does it have to be like that? If money actually meant something in this game, it would be totally fine to base mission rewards and upgrades around an in-game economy. Yeah, ED is probably never going to be that kind of game but do we give them a pass for not being able to find a solution because the problem was that they were too incompetent to come up with a better system in the first place?

I don't know, I admit I haven't thought much about it but I feel like going loot-shooter wasn't their only available option.

For money to mean anything there needs to be a player based economy, as in a player auction house. It seems baffling there isn't one (unless I've majorly missed a huge feature, I've only come back after the years of content drough in Horizons).

I would've preferred all the engineers stuff to instead have been special player crafted modules, forming the basis of an economy, along with things like minded resources and special ammunition and ordance and such. Maybe even crafted cosmetics. That would actually give players regular money sinks.

People weren't talking about flight models and pseudo physics, the OP was talking about cat memes. Are YOU fine with having missions where you break into secure complexes, probably murdering a few people along the way, to steal a cat meme? Do you think that fits the vibe that the game strives for?
I wasn't quoting OP.

FD was pretty adamant about no player-run economy. I think a regular single-player model of earning credits and spending credits would have worked perfectly fine in this game. But there was a definite shift from more sim-like elements (like meaningful upkeep costs) to more casual play with easy income. People still complain about the grinding though.

For game currency to mean anything, there has to be grinding. I think FD should have stuck to its guns on this but that's probably really unpopular.

BTW, I was killed stealing cat's meme. Truly, EDO is the most dystopian game I've ever played.

It's borderlands level of absurd.
Cat Memes are NFTs by this point in 3307. Worth tons. You're lucky you got off with only death. :)

Fun fact, I have more weapon schematics (11) than cats meme (0) at this point. Cats meme are a rare drop it seems. I also have a few air quality report, union memberships and so on.

I even have a cocktail recipe !

I wish I would make that stuff up, but I'm not. I don't even know exactly what's used in engineering and what isn't (cat's meme are to unlock an engineer), because FDEV decided it was a good idea to have engineering material, but also use some commodities for engineering. Stuff like the previously mentioned stuff.

I have a single cat meme, I have it sealed in a vault at the Bank of Zaonce.

-I'm breaking and entering inside people's room in a Resort to steal cat memes from their computer. So that my personal shield are stronger and my weapon shoot faster.
-I'm shot for a 100credits loitering pad I got from an abandoned and unpowered outpost
-If I don't stop IMMEDIATELY for a scanning by a guard, I'm shot. If I'm in the air when they ask me to stop, and can't stop because, well, I'm in the air, then I'm also shot.
-I'm stealing personal computers, wires, duct tapes and various items from people's lockers, since I can't buy them. To make my gun shoot further away.
-All the bartenders in the galaxy are also specialist in crafting materials, and will trade them with any strangers. They don't sell drinks. Must be a weird thing like the firemen in Farenheit 451 who start fires instead of extinguishing them.
-People are offering illegal missions overtly to anybody, by asking them loudly if they want to do something illegal, with people within earshot, in any bar in the galaxy. Sometimes against another faction, who have a representative within earshot. Should you refuse, they'll loudly ask you to direct any unscrupulous friend to them.
-I'm being dropped into a settlement, where my goal is to sit next to a pylon, while shooting enemies who's goal is also to sit near the same pylon. If I die, I'm "resurrected" through space magic, and dropped back into the fight. It will continue until one side run out of point that are debited by capturing the pylon previously mentioned. The settlement will then reset back to its previous stage of warfare, should I wish to do it all over again. It's like Groundhog Day, but with more guns.
-All the concourse in the universe look the same, following 2 or 3 different patterns. Colors changes though.
-0g outposts are filled with litters, that magically stick to the floor. There are also benches, which are used by people who forcibly put their bottom on it (0g you know). There is also a variety of crates, which have decided that 0g was not for them and act like there was gravity
-We teleport from and to the inside of our cockpit. Even though teleporting technology doesn't exist. However, we do not teleport our SRV and SLF, we need to dock them properly into the hangar bay.
-I can scan alien plants. I need to scan 3 of them sufficiently far away from each other to get a complete DNA sequencing. Apparently my tool can't do it from one, and even less if they are too close to each other. Also, the little canister I use to store the space magic dust is unique, and I can only scan one species of plant at a time. Should I want to scan another plant, I'll have to dump the invisible space dust from my canister, by pushing very hard on the big red button (for real). Do note, however, that once fully scanned, the magic space dust is transformed into an invisible data thing, and I can store as many of those as I want.

I mean it's so realistic I'm wondering what's real at this point !

Oh and even if it's presented jokingly, it's all accurate gameplay loop and features.
Agreed on all counts. It really is a fantasy setting gathering mechanic for the far future where you can just buy these things. Some indirectly, like power regulators in SRVs. I understand the ship engineering to a degree, it's raw and odd materials that might be proprietary. But cat memes? Power Regulators? Batteries? From a bar tender? It's immersion shattering. I can appreciate the game element but the devs have, like you mention in your post used "realism" as reasoning in the same game where they stated thing slike interiors are cut to be more game like and easier on players. On Foot engineering needs an overhaul IMHO. The higher level just equating to more of the same material is so out there.

It's literally what I'm doing right now. it's not an exageration. I'm literally doing that. Also looking for opinion polls (same terminals).

I mean, technically I switched from the resort I was to a spa.
opinion polls were removed because they were being used too often due to Frontier not acknowledging negative feedback.

I found one opinion poll ! Need 39 now !

No cat meme so far. I'm concerned, how do people express their feelings without using memes ? With words ? Come on, I'm serious.

Where are you finding the polls?
Wall datapads inside hab module, especially in touristic places. Avoid resort and spa, they have no pad except in the lounge. Lodgings are good. Go to anarchy system, so you don't get fined when you get spotted.

Okay that's what I'm doing except in an election system which seems to do absolutely nothing lol. And not anarchy cuz i wanted to try democracy... which also seems to not do anything. I got 3 polls in like 4 hours constantly doing this loop of 6 data points.

I think I'll just move to anarchy so i can do it faster... not having to wait for ppl to turn away and such.

It's a rare drop. I had one in 3 runs.

Good points! I only disagree with the litter around 0g stations. As a guy who works as a lighting artist/world builder, sometimes you need to break realism for sake of good level design. One of the key principles is to make your world feel lived in. And due to the sake of the procedural nature of the game, its impossible to have those items appear on only X stations so overall I'm happy and want my interiors to look lived in and people are messy even in space as they are here lol. =) That is a pretty minor issue to me in terms of realism.

I Laughed so hard at this I steamed up my glasses!

Ok, I'll bite.

One of your examples was the problem that we can trade with personal weapons but need to go to a weapon dealer to buy one. Some ideas:

1. Remove the commodity from the game.
2. Remove weapon dealers from the game.
3. Come up with a lore reason. I would guess that the guy who drives the truck for Heckler & Koch isn't allowed to simply take weapons from the cargo. So if he wants to own a gun, he still needs to buy one from an arms dealer. In Germany, weapons actually are registered.

Obviously you can now come up with a counter argument, that you could just steal the cargo. Now I come up with a counter argument again, that weapons in Elite have a safety mechanism and can only be used when they get unlocked for you. This would also explain why we can't use the weapons from dead enemies. Now you come up with a counter argument again, an engineer could simply bypass that restriction. And so on.
At some point you need to stop. Otherwise you don't get a game. That doesn't mean I am necessarily against that kind of stuff, it's just completely arbitrary because you could do it with pretty much every element of the game.
If I buy the cargo, it's mine.
I can dump it in space - no questions asked.
Why can't I crack open the crate and help myself?
It's mine, I bought it.

The damage fall off for kinetic weapons doesn't make sense, as there is no resistance in space, thus a projectile will travel at its given speed until the end of time (or until it hits something). For energy weapons, the range does make sense, you can argue that the beam loses power after a set distance.

hat's because we don't travel in normal space when in supercruise.
We actually shorten space in front of us and don't travel fast.
Gravity is disrupting the process which is why we slow down.

Problem with that is the supercruise should be able to navigate AROUND the massive body. In fact the supercruise should be able to take you from point A to point B in as timely a manner as is possible in physics without being confused by obstacles, or the target hiding behind a planet.

Instead the supercruise will just as soon as not smash you into any obstacle.

For most normal flights, carrying passengers, or cargo, or what have you, you should only need to set the destination and go.

Manual flight went out in the mid 21st century.
