Has the hysteria died down yet?

Yes, it was botched, but does that justify posting a very permanent and very negative review online?

Yes. it does. If you are going to release a Game that was promised to be a finished product and not expect blowback? you are mistaken friend. I was expecting a little bit of rust with F-Dev Reputation but this was as if they yanked the product off the sea floor covered in barnacles and falling apart with rust.

Also. here is a little secret, People can Edit steam Reviews post mortem. If a company gets their $#!^ straightened out after launch then reviewers like me will reverse our review to a thumbs up. so its not so permanent as you think. but it will be a scar on their record and they will have to earn the peoples respect back.

So are you saying that you would be happy to have a job where people could openly be offensive towards you & you were expected to not let it have ANY effect on you?

Interesting to know what job you do cmdr, as I worked for 7 years in the Prison Service & know exactly how offensive some people can be towards you, just because of the job you do.
Abuse is abuse.....not just racist, sexist, homophobic.

Lol I've been marketing products more hated than loved for almost the past 20 years. Getting abuse from customers? Thats not Tuesday for me. Thats every day of the week.

Thing is, when you are trained as a professional you quickly learn that the customers aren't mad at you personally. They are mad at the product. Your job is to make them less mad by fixing the product.

That you consider any negative feelings to be "abuse" is the product of highly unprofessional organizations - which is unfortunately the norm in Western organizations since your HR departments are so obsessed with everyone's present positive feelings rather than their long term professional growth.

Contrary to your nonsense, negative feelings do not simply beat you down. If directed and explained properly they are an essential step to grow and mature. It is natural to feel bad if you screw up. A professional organization uses those feelings to teach and improve. An unprofessional one simply tries to make you forget those negative feelings with false praise so HR can report employee satisfaction is at an all time high.

Indeed, an environment where everyone is artificially polite and positive just results in an office of Stepford Smilers - outwardly positive, but desperately unhappy on the inside. Because people as a rule in fact loathe fake praise and just feel like a perpetual imposter.

Finally, I do find it funny you're in Prison Services and complain about "abuse". In reality, most prison systems - even American and British ones - actually wrongly imprison innocent people with alarming regularity. Some statistics indicate innocent people in jail are in fact the majority.

But of course we're supposed to never mention these jailed innocent people - who are suffering an actual and substantial for of unjust long-term abuse - and instead sympathize with the guards holding them captive.

While I will admit the release of Odyssey was, it's fair to say, botched. The fact that David Braben made a public apology within twenty four hours of the launch, and the fact there have been multiple patches and updates since show a determination to make things right on Frontier's part.

I have to say though I was rolling my eyes throughout the first few days. The reaction, and especially the reviews posted by people on Steam really do demonstrate how unbelievably stupid people can be. I mean, I sometimes wonder how people this thick are able to stand upright and feed themselves

As an example, the "immediate reaction" of these people was "Odyssey is broken, it's unplayable, and this is clearly what the game is, what it was intended to be, and what it always will be". All this no more than 48 hours after the launch when patches and updates were already incoming, and Frontier had acknowledged the problems.

But no, this is just what Odyssey was and clearly it was never going to be fixed, and so the thick gobby brigade posted their reviews and messages. It's quite pathetic really. Has it died down yet, as I very quickly switched off so I could read something intelligent instead :cautious:

There's enough obsequious gaslighting in this post (& the OP's subsequent replies) to power a fleet carrier across 10 galaxies.

I was referring to the barrage of Steam reviews all saying the game was crap when they ought to have known the current state of Odyssey wasn't what it was meant, or going to be. People should know you post reviews of a finished game, as they're very unlikely to change those reviews later.
ummm, it was my understanding Odyssey was a finished game - it is what was advertised - if you cannot see the problem then you never will. You even mention that Fdev came out right away and admitted it and people have no obligation to be happy just because of that, in fact it might make some angry because it is so obvious it was not ready... so in my book Odyssey deserves every negative review it gets. It is still mostly unplayable for me, VR is definitely out as there are to many glitches and bugs to count. Will it get fixed? I dunno some of it will - would be nice to have our $$ back while they figure it out.

For some reason some people think ripping people off is ok when it's done by a game company around a game they like but would never accept 1/2 cooked food at a restaurant and would certainly complain and send it back, I don't see how this is any different. Now those complaining about the lack of content and variety - they should not have expected more - everything in Elite is copy/paste - rinse/repeat grind and time sinks... it what is considered gameplay in Elite so those negative reviews are just people wishing for something that was never going to be there, but if it does not run and you cannot play what you paid for... that's justified 100%.

Why does everyone forget about the mmo FF14. They actually closed the servers, offered a refund to anyone who didn't want to wait then rewrote the game from scratch and reopened to great aclaim:
Their secret? Communication and not lying to their consumer base.

OP,

As a fellow successful career in tech person, I also despise inferior people with their inferior opinions. Us successful career in tech people should simply be put in charge of the world and everything would be better.

Great thread 👍

So yes, we may think they are idiots, but I'm sure the feeling is mutual. They probably think we are stupid for allowing this to happen. They may think that we are the reason why so many developers get away with releasing unfinished products these days.
I am of the general opinion that in order to preorder a game, one HAS TO be an idiot. Anyone at all who does it, knowing full well how publishers constantly lie and push developers to have a minimum viable product ready for an unreasonable release date that's impossible to deliver, is an idiot. Because they NEVER LEARN. I always wait for the reviews that tell me a game's an unfinished buggy mess, and then spend my money on something else.

Being completely aware of what you are doing doesn't necessarily make you an idiot. Blindly following the hype train and just believing marketing can make you one.

But yes, as long as preordering is misused on the other end of the bargain as a quick money grab, it hurts much more than it does any good. Neither for players, nor for publishers and developers.

In the age of digital games, with the exception of pre-order bonuses (which should not be encouraged), I don't see the logic behind pre-ordering anymore.
Well, that's precisely why they invented the preorder bonus. Because of the fact that there's no incentive to preorder now that they cannot run out of stock. It's a manipulative underhanded tactic to get your money in advance and not need to worry about delivering on any promises, and it's always a red flag to me about the quality I can expect in the "finished" product.

Outside of the "general opinion" why might one preorder a game if one is certainly not an idiot?
(Of course, idiot, moron or bigot are words with differing interpretations, depending on who is using them, surely?)
Sometimes (very rarely) giving money in advance is connected with a nice discount, but it's a practice I see less and less. Usually they throw some pointless skins or an item which cannot be good otherwise accusations of pay to win will happen.

Sadly, even "CDPR can do no wrong" actually did wrong, and if even them, once most pro-consumer games developer succumbed to shareholder pressure, I don't have anyone to trust with preorder money anymore.
