Looks like I'm buying Odyssey....

FD: we introduce to you space legs and millions of new landable planets to explore,
so you can finally leave your ship you have been locked in for years!

Some Commanders: space legs, cool, can I walk through my ship interior? No? Bad space legs, not interested :(

I guess this is some kind of Stockholm syndrome relationship with your ships.
You have been locked in too long and it twisted the priorities/balance in experiencing freedom of movement :)

Do you even play the game or do you just like making posts like that? That's exactly what frontier was thinking when they made odysee, obviously.

Do you even play the game (...)
Well, actually I do, "a bit".

And I have two more accounts, so it's more or less half of my in-game time :)

EDIT: and my post was focused on mental state of ED community, FD was just a background for that.

I was recently gifted the funding to purchase Odyssey, so it won't cost me any of my own money, and yet I'm not much excited about buying it. I am curious, mainly because I just want to experience for myself all that Odyssey is and is not. I also have this vain hope that I might be able to "fix it" on some level, at least the lighting. But all in all, I'm almost grimacing at the idea of giving Frontier any money, even someone else's money, for this DLC in it's current state. I hate rewarding bad behavior. Though once I buy it, I can leave my own Steam review, so Frontier may rather I don't buy it!

I am going to try to experience Odyssey "untainted" by all the negativity surrounding it, forming my own opinions separate from the "mob". Who knows, maybe I'll end up loving Odyssey? I've seen videos and livestreams that make me think I'll be very disappointed in Odyssey, but I've also seen videos and screenshots that makes me think it's not so bad after all. Like Horizons, if I can find a subset of gameplay loops to enjoy from the "buffet" of options, that would be good.

Still, I should feel more excitement rather than apprehension about buying the "New Era" DLC from Frontier. If I hadn't been gifted the funds for this specific purpose, I would not be spending my own money on it. I think this is a pretty damning commentary on just how bad the PR around Odyssey is at the moment. Frontier, you really screwed the pooch on this release.. You can't say I didn't warn you!

I'll update this thread after I download Odyssey and play with it a little bit. I'm going to wait until the next major patch (which I hope will come out this week) before committing to this purchase. Until then I'm playing other games, because even Horizons has lost its appeal due to the overall "sadness" in the community right now.

.... One should not have buyers remorse BEFORE pressing the "buy" button ....

I wonder what percentage of "DON'T DO IT"s
have played EDO long enough to make their own opinion about the actual gameplay,
and how many are just following some IKNOWITBETTER youtubers or some other reliable and objective sources ;)

PS. this is a GENERAL question and answering "I played zillion hours and I hated every single moment" is irrelevant.
Only a poll would answered that what makes my question kinda rhetorical one at the moment.

I like you OP have held off buying Odyssey...I could see this being a massive problem release way back when FD first announced what the 'new era' would be.

Nothing I've seen or heard since has changed my opinion and I won't be buying it any time soon.

As a fellow sceptic I'm interested to see how you get on, it may soften my stance on this or may re-affirm my scepticism.

Good luck...I'll be keeping tabs on how you get on.

Nooooooo, don't do it! This giving in is why this stuff continues to happen over and over. Even if it's not your own money, don't reward Fdev for doing this the way they did.

Bide your time, wait for a huge sale or better yet, until they fix it with a huge patch addressing issues. Don't give in. I was hoping I was wrong when I said everyone here would buy it anyway even if it killed their best friends, because y'all are in some serious stockholm syndrome.

Hold out, for consumer friendly behavior and holding companies accountable for their actions! I implore you.
I totally hear what you are saying, and I do feel kinda "dirty" rewarding Frontier with money from any source, but on the other hand, one person won't make or break Frontier. Believe me, I tried the whole "vote with your wallet" campaign during the EBL Incident on PS4, and all I got in return was static.

The way I'm looking at it, from my own frame of reference, is that I'm volunteering to test a FREE (to me) Beta, and I'm cool with that. I will also unlock the right to post an official review on Steam, and I might be able to better hold Frontier's feet to the fire with a well-written but damning (if that's the conclusion I come to on my own) review.

In fact, one of the reasons I made this thread is so that FRONTIER realizes how badly they screwed up. Not only did I not want to spend my own money on this "New Era major expansion" of theirs, I feel conflicted spending someone else's money on it! That and all the feedback I'm getting is very damning in its own right, to the point where this thread might actually "cost" Frontier more than $40 worth of good will... Not that I'm looking to destroy the company (as I said, I'm willingly participating in their "beta"), but I do feel they need to be held accountable.

For whatever my two cents are worth, I have just finished a 22,000 ly exploration round trip and enjoyed it just as much. The background skybox scenery wasn't as nice, but I have grown to appreciate the new planet tech. It can make some truly beautiful planets along with the genuine dogs. Now that I know what to look for hunting the plants has its moments as well. I've hardly touched the FPS portion and couldn't care less about doing more than futzing around until they fix things.
The skybox is something I'm hoping to fix. If the skybox changes are purely 100% done in the pixel shaders, I can actually replace Odyssey's PS with my modified Horizon's PS, basically "copy-n-pasting" Horizon's skybox into Odyssey. That's a very big IF, but it will be one of the first things I try. At the very least, I can tweak the new PS to be a bit brighter.

That said, right now my efforts to "fix" Odyssey will themselves be MVP, because I don't want to spend hours tweaking shaders that Frontier then fix themselves in a patch a week later. I can't imagine that Frontier will leaving lighting "as-is" forever in Odyssey, that just cannot be by design.

Going by some of the comments I have responded to and asked the poster if they have played Odyssey, followed by a careful sidestep of the question? There are certainly some. I've over 100 hours played in Odyssey release and wouldn't suggest someone (like @Old Duck ) buy it with marginal hardware.
Yeah, I wouldn't count on finding an Opinion Poll right now.
I found both an Opinion Poll and a Cat Meme last night, in the same facility... Sadly Hab Data Port 2, my target, was not to be found.

Try really REALLY hard! I genuinely want to know your unbiased opinion. I'm far too engaged with the community to have remained uninfected by the opinions of others. I'm pretty sure 90% of my dissapointment with Odyssey is my own but I'm just not sure ay more. Negativity is so infectious.
I'm pretty good at keeping my technical diagnosis unbiased. Even my current opinions about Odyssey are based on what I've seen in screenshots and misc. "some random guy playing Odyssey for an hour" videos, not the written opinions of the masses (though predictably I share many of those opinions).

Where I start getting infected by negativity is the "Frontier is evil, Frontier must pay for their sins!" mentality that is starting to resonate with the mob. I feel that sentiment starting to creep into my own psyche as well. Words like "greedy, incompetent, dishonest, grifters, amateurs, clueless" (the list goes on) are attaching themselves like barnacles to my image of Frontier, and I'm sure at least some of that is the infectious nature of mob mentality. With this in mind, I have made a pledge to myself that any official review I leave on Steam will focus on just the facts and technical diagnosis, rather than emotional opinions for which I have no solid evidence.

Ah yes, the person that was telling how they will wait one or two month, now suddenly changes the tune, because someone told them too. Yep, not your fault, someone else is forcing you to do it. You resisted for as long as you could!
You must be a drama actor or a novel writer in real life aren't you?

Oh, the hardware factor, I tend to forget about this "trifle".
Yep, you need a lot of CPU/GPU power to enjoy EDO on graphic settings high enough to put some sense into switching from EDH to EDO.

Yeah, if your rig is not high enough specs to withstand EDO´s performance issues I would also recommend to pass and wait for performance improvements, especially if you are aiming to issue a review of some kind. There are tons of great elements in EDO that get completly overpowered and will go unnoticed, or become unreviewable due mainly to the performance issues.

On the other hand if your goal is to slam a poor review based mainly on performance or just to send a message to FDEV, by all means. Although for that you dont need to ponder for too long, and money should not be an issue at all. Just simply buy EDO on Steam, drop your bomb within an hour and then ask for a refund.

If you are serious about a proper assessment though I suggest to at least wait for performance to get back to a more reasonable state that allows you to actually assess something.

@Old Duck has a laptop that is able to play Horizons in VR, but not a lot of headroom left over to be able to throw at Odyssey.
You & me probably have plenty of headroom left playing Horizons - and maybe are prepared to change the odd setting away from Ultra currently. Allegedly some of the 'older' bits of hardware are faring quite well also, it will be a 'wait and see' for how Mr Duck fares, although I believe it will not have a happy ending ;)

What makes you think I have marginal hardware? It's only "marginal" when it comes to playing in VR at between high and ultra quality, and even then it's only marginal in places like planetary bases. In 2D I've got plenty of headroom in Horizons.

And if I can run all my other games (which includes very demanding games like Red Dead Online and Microsoft Flight Simulator) with good framerates, and Odyssey runs like a dog on that same computer, then yeah, my review will reflect this.

On the point of VR, I am worried that Odyssey will switch ED from a VR title to a 2D title for me. I can actually live without VR FPS, but losing VR for space flight would be a serious blow to my interest in ED. This is why I support initiatives to keep Odyssey tech out of Horizons until (IF) that tech can match the performance of Horizons, because right now Horizons is by far the best VR title I own.
