Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Guys on Elite Week make this game sound way better than y'all do. 🤷‍♂️

In my defense,

I'm not an expert but i know enough to understand DX11 is garbage, its ok if you work with in its limits but those limits are very tight compared with Vulkan.

Vulkan is derived from an API created by AMD, Mantle, it was created because DX 11 was, well..... #### and at the time MS had no interest in scrapping it for something new and better, Mantle was created as competition to DX11.
It worked, MS spawned DX12, with is better than DX11 but still not as good as Mantle, Vulkan.
AMD gave the API to the Kronos Group to manage, being an AMD technology Intel or Nvidia would never have taken it up, Kronos renamed it Vulkan.

This is a video of BF4 running DX11 vs Mantle on a relatively slow CPU, DX11 on the left, Mantle on the right, its my Video.

Its not that DX11 is garbage. DX in general has always had its issues, but it does the job. I remember back in the days of the DX vs OpenGL wars where OpenGL was held up as the superior system. And there was something to it. As someone said, to animate a triangle you could do it in OpenGL in a few lines of code whereas with DirectX the same would take 200 lines of code.

But i expect pretty much the same with regards to DX12 vs Vulkan. Vulkan will show what it can do, and Microsoft will do their usual EEE (Embrace, Extent, Eliminate) and in a few years Vulkan will be forgotten about.

Comparing SC to real games numbers is meaningless. All it proves is that SC is mostly static geometry with nothing interesting happening. Arguing that SC is well optimised also means that performance can only get worse in the event that they add more features.
CIG is still coasting on Crytek's decade-old work when it comes to rendering. And it doesn't matter what the potential gains are, in CIG's hands Vulkan will ultimately be yet another jesus patch that promises much and delivers nothing. I have no doubt the real reason that they haven't implemented it themselves is because they've tried and failed, and they're waiting for Amazon to do it for them (look forward to a lot of refactoring). RDR2 came out with Vulkan support in 2019, even Valheim supports it, as usual CIG is already way behind the curve.

I dont think so IMHO - OpenGL was never forgotten for example, ID Software always used it for all of their engines (and they were top of the line), and Vulkan gives the ability to have one base of code for PC, consoles and even mobile or whatever (for the 3D engine part of course) - it's very attractive to many as compared to DX12 which is strictly limited to Microsoft world (PC + XBox). Say you are a dev studio and plan a future release for PC / Xbox / PS5, it's a natural choice. Also allows to compile for Linux and that's something that Valve have been pushing for a long long time... CiG while doing the right thing here, should have done that right thing 10 years ago though.

Hey, it’s only been 4 years since their last flip flop…

Star Citizen announced Mantle support in 2013, DirectX 12 support in 2015, and now, Vulkan support in 2017

You gamers are so entitled and impatient

Looks like of the alpha.

Of course, this is what backers do. Don't expect backers to update their knowledge as CP, EDO, etc. progress.

Given the video was posted march 31st, you dont have to be nostradamus to figure out it is from alpha.

I've got no idea if the game is still rendering the eyeballs of npcs you cant see inside of a building that you are 100's of meters above.

Has anyone posted a similar retest?

About $2M in sales past three day's worth of ship sale.

Another bumper sale for CIG. Business is booming.

On track to break the $400M mark in sales alone this year, not counting external investment.

Buy a few more Idri folks, mama needs another pair of shoes. 😅
