ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

I just had my application for a refund denied by Frontier: they said I have played too much, and that their post on the subject had been clear: “We understand that VR is a big part of Elite Dangerous and is a feature that holds a dedicated and passionate community. However, we do strongly believe that VR should only be enabled for on foot gameplay when we have an experience that truly matches the same quality bar that we set for cockpits”

That to me implies that VR on foot was still planned, whereas now they are saying it is not.
Frontier!!!!!!
Call me an absolute fool but that still implies to me they will work on bringing it in in the future. Of course it could also be an empty lie, a promise that never gets fulfilled.

I just think they have been trying to run Elite with a skeleton crew for too long and have suddenly realised the ship is sinking and now don't have enough hands. What they need is more resources, resources in time and talent that should have been there for the last 4 years but were siphoned off or allowed to wither.

It seems like a lot of this new honesty needs to be clarified much more clearly.

No plans to develop VR further as we have it now doesn't even fully make sense as a sentence and could be interpreted in a couple of different ways.

They need to say, very specifically that they either mean.

There will never be any more VR development for the game.

Or

We are not currently working on VR development, but will look at it in the future 9nce we've sorted the mess out.

And if they haven't made a decision on either of those two, then they need to say.

We are making a decision on if we will ever do any more VR development.

They can't be "honest" without clear concise answers that can only be interpreted in one way.

The bottom part is pretty much what we've said. We're not saying it's never coming, just that it's not being worked on at the moment and there are no immediate plans to.

So are you saying that there are longer term plans to revisit VR? It's on the current roadmap but further down the list?

I was saying to a friend that this sort of statement (the one in SC news), when people are so frustrated and emotional, is like being kicked when we're down, but my opinion (because it's all I have) is that with the issues/problems/call-it-what-you-want being encountered clearly took FDev by surprise so any development, whether it's VR, new ships, POV Thargoids - whatever - has probably been shelved to get the game to where it should be.

THEN, it'd be nice to get a view of what the roadmap for content and VR looks like. I found Arthur's "bad news is better than no news" angle refreshing... but it's also a little raw at times ;)

I suspect keeping the console versions to vanilla Xbox/PS5 is creating havoc, too. I have no fixes, just some patience I think to continue with Horizons whilst you do the do. Best of luck.

@zac you can see the problem right? Frontier doesn’t want to show longer term roadmaps as they are scared to let people down, but they are still letting people down ( big time when it comes to VR).

treat as like adults Frontier, and give us an idea of your vision for VR!!!
I'm a VR-only player, but as my post said, I think they've said "Nope, forget it; too hard. Look at the 1000s of bugs/fixes we have to do. Deal with that then work out what's next".

I suspect they have plenty of vision - but if you were them, would you be making promises to that end right now? Would you believe any of it?

Not wishing to appear unkind or disrespectful, but...

Even for the few years I've been playing we have been told "no immediate plans", or similar, which apparently translates to a request to "stop bothering us, it isn't coming".

With the 'promise' of better communication from Frontier (and your good selves) would it not make better sense to persuade the decision makers that actually revealing future plans and aspirations for the game would be excellent PR?

Not a bleat, not a rant, but trying to point out that 'the community' (whoever they are) appear to have morale at an all-time low - Frontier have it in their power to turn this around - all it takes is words, and actions.

No. He clearly said there are no plans currently and it's not on the roadmap. Might change in the future, but don't count on it.

Which is kind of the problem.

They need to be able to tell us definitively if they will, or will not work on it in the future.

Not tell us that they currently don't have it planned, something might happen who knows.

With something smaller like a new piece of gameplay, or improvements to something that exists, that kind of answer is fine.

With something like VR, the company need to make a decision on if they will develop it in the future, and then tell us straight.

I do appreciate that the CM here is being as honest as is possible within the bounds of his job role and I have no issue with that, I have an issue with the company being unwilling to make a big decision and then stick to it.

But it wouldn't - would it? You still have people bleating on even today about the cancelled offline mode from 7-8 years ago. Now imagine they publish their hopes to do more with VR without the resources to back it up ...

As we've said - we will be talking about upcoming features etc. That's going to be a part of the monthly streams with the development team and Supercruise News when appropriate.

Dear Zac

That particular statement holds as much information as "There might come a day, where we finally get flying cars".

Remember the new communication policy about being more honest. There are many ways of not being honest. That's why it's called "The truth, the WHOLE truth, and nothing but", and that includes vaporware.

They said that?

Yes, I wonder where they said that

I can't bring myself to watch that stream and clip it, after Arf promised a thread with VR feedback, and then switched to "LOL NO". Clipped by yours truly:

A list of features and issues and their current status, like the one from FS2020, that was shared recently. It would help immensly both FDev (not to answer the same questions over and over again) and the community (having ONE source of information, not wasting time on confirmed issues or missing features).

You don’t necessarily have to make promises, just use plain common English instead of legal speak.
