Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Update 4

SWTOR won't work with wine/etc above 5.13 :D Dunno why, had to freeze there. Even 5.21 breaks textures as I saw in 2014 - same thing.

i had a lot of breakages in 5.x above a certain version too. those went away with proton 6.3/experimental. Now i just use that for everything.

Well, I have to admit to being extremely frustrated by this turn of events, this was our last chance to get bug reports in before the ‘final’ Update 5.

Now the opportunity is lost due to a borked patch deployment, the connecting issues will be fixed in short order, the bugs however will be left.

Who told you it was the last chance to get bug reports in? We will still very much be taking feedback regardless. Today is not the only day to provide feedback - keep it coming! o7

I'm already worried about 3 lines in patchnotes :D What you consider "fix" I consider "new bug added". However, need to run game and see it first ...

Just a note, proton ships with a very clean version of gstreamer (this is what plays audio/video content in your games) so if you have a game (like anything made with unreal engine) that happens to use files that require a codec that is less than fully open source and free (like AAC) ... then you'll need to do some finessing of your proton install with your own system gstreamer (assuming your distro is fairly new ...it should have the same version)

you'll want to make sure your system has the ugly/bad codecs installed for 32bit and 64bit. Then copy the gstreamer-1.0 module libs in from your 32bit and 64bit system folders into the respective 32bit and 64bit folders in your proton install directories (overwriting the existing ones)....then copy in the actual libgstreamer library for both 32bit and 64bit, replacing the one provided by valve in the respective lib directories.

That should keep you from crashing when playing those types of audio/video streams in games that do not handle exceptions properly when failing to play a certain audio effect or video file (cough, conan exiles, cough).

It's not necessary for elite, since it doesn't have such audio/video codec uses ...but anything unreal4 based can probably benefit. If you get rando crashes doing specific things in certain games or are missing cutscenes, this may be the cause.

1 word: symlinks :D

I just noticed if I turn Gamma all the way up in the graphics options, all the dust is back and it pretty much looks just like Horizons. Not sure what's going on here, if this is a new development after the latest update or was this always the case. Is gamma simply set too low in the game?

It most certainly is a gamma issue. Either some spectral types of main stars turn your gamma down when they shouldn't, or gamma isn't sufficiently taken into account when rendering the skybox in the first place. Either way, I cannot play with gamma set to max, everything else looks awful that way :D

I’ve spent more time in the last four weeks posting bugs to the issue tracker than I have in Elite Dangerous‘s entire lifetime - which includes Premium Beta. The bugs myself and others have posted are quite bad - is it wrong to try to get them addressed before the final Update 5?

It’s the roadmap that is saying Update 5 is it until console release, I’m really not sure I want to wait months on end to have the game in a release state.

4 words. Steam update to proton.

You dont want steam overwriting your system installed versions because it decided to keep the existing "folders" which are just symlinks ...and replace the files in them with it's own.

edit: and yes, this means you may have to update your modification of gstreamer any time steam updates proton for the versions you are modifying the files to. But that's a small price to pay for no more crashes and full support of the game vs no cut scenes etc.

If I tab out and come back to the game I get extremely bad framerates and have to restart the game from scratch to fix it.
try to change from Fullscreen to Borderless or vise versa and for myself I had to turn off Vertical Sync. Also, shadow quality Low and Ambient occlusion Off.
I would advice you to get some kind of program to check your GPU and CPU performance. I have one included with my GPU. I run this game on 3GB GPU so...
what kind of GPU do you have ?

edited: also be careful what kind of programs you run in the background.

Hi All
Steam User, Odyssey installed. Was battling the malevolent Orange Sidewinder for quite some time. Confirming it was fixed when I validated through the game launcher (not Steam). Good luck all.

Are you launching it as root ? 8-0

true, it wouldn't have permission to delete the files if you're taking from /usr/ and not some local copy of gstreamer (in case your distro is not rocking the same version)

but that could cause issues when updating proton that lead to the update failing vs completing. ..which you dont want either.
