No further VR development is both expected and makes sense

If you get sick then maybe VR isn't for you snowflake.

Really? Maybe I should have said I get annoyed with having the headset clamped to my skull. I once did several hours in a late 80's/early 90's commercial full motion kit, they weighed a whole lot more, but were more comfortable to wear.

There has obviously been a lot of disappointment and anger over the fact Frontier have announced they won't be developing a full VR experience for on-foot gameplay. I play in VR sometimes, and sometimes I play normally, but 100% back the lack of VR for on-foot.

The amount of development resource required to design and create a proper on-foot VR experience that also integrates properly with non-VR players is immense. Absolutely nothing to do with performance (although that's not been great so far in Odyssey but slowly improving). It's a bit more involved and requires a bit more thought than one suggestion I saw which was "oh it's the same as the SRV just change the cab for the helmet HUD". Frontier are not a global developer with offices worldwide that they can just point at and go "you 300 people are doing the VR on-foot".

Performance concerns aren't the reason you're not having it - the reason you're not having it is Frontier has a limited amount of resources and they've allocated them to create something that 95% of the player base can access and enjoy. They declined to expend massive amounts of resource on something that a small percentage will ever see. How many new players or existing players returning and buying the expansion will on-foot VR bring in above and beyond the standard experience?

There's a strong argument to end all VR support because it frees up time chasing down and maintaining issues with it which could be spent elsewhere, in much the same way the 32-bit and DirectX 10 support was ended, but as ED remains one of VR's killer apps (I've certainly not done much else with my headset other than a bit of Audioshield) maybe there are other incentives to keep it going because it retains that premier status of a "big" game which is even better in VR.

Anyway, just some thoughts, keep on going Frontier, I'm mostly enjoying Odyssey when it behaves.
Right so. Leave Horizons as itis, and those of us wanting VR can use that and skip this non VR DLC... Note DLCs should not depend on previous DLCs...

To summ up.

An FPS shooter had both Ship Interiors and EVA, while a Space Sim doesn't.
Of course it did. It's an FPS. Its focus is on the people, not the ship and the flying. All they had to do to make a spaceship was take the wheels off a truck. No major change to their existing mechanics because they already had people interacting with moving vehicles. And nobody buys CoD because of the ship interiors.

Which I have taken they won't be taking advantage of the new controller technology or taking advantage of that ultra fast SDD or other PS5 features. Not that when you play on the PS5 that it won't be using the best available textures.
The PS5 will use the crappy (best available) PS4 textures in BC unless it gets a native version which as far as we know isn't planned.

I've worn mine for 6 hours none stop without issue. A £5 15" velcro strap to go across the top of your head, like a headphone band, removes any need for a clamping force. You would probably have figured this out if you'd used one for more than a quick demo.

I've played HL:Alyx and finished it in 2 sessions, not sure how long either was, but long enough.

Sony might have plans. Who knows with FDev? We can't even get traction on a PS5 native version. So good luck with getting FDev to commit to PSVR2.
Frankly I've all but given up on EDOVR, I think we'll sooner see the introduction of a Battle Royal mode quickly followed by a zombie horde mode...

Look at their overall content and development speed over the past 7 years. Then tell me if this is something they can implement quickly with a straight face.
Oh their development speed is fine, I mean look at Planet Coaster, Planet Zoo, Jurrassic World Evolution or Horizons port to consoles... These were written from scratch in a few years tops. It's just that prioritisation of the resources is kinda unfair.

Yeah I once had a car with uncomfortable seats, but that didn't stop me from ever buying a new car.

VR for Ship and SRV in Odyssey will still be developed and supported afaik.
Actually, no. They explicitely said through their THC (The Honest Communitymanager), that there's "no further VR development going forward" for Odyshiy, and there isn't any timescale for it. As in zero, zilch, nada, none, not any soul and not even Bob from the accounting who is secretly dreaming about becoming a game developer is working on ANY VR CODE in the game in any capacity and won't be working . It's done, we're stuck with what we have now with a vague promise of fixing some identified issues with the scanning or something when they get around to tinker in that part of the code. Orbit lines? Forget it.

What this corpospeak (clear, this time) means is that they won't touch the working code, but they also won't bring it up to speed with the advancements in the codebase. So, say, one time we get gas giants (hahahahahahahahhaha), they will be pancake-only. We get full atmospherics (hahahahahahahaha), they will be pancake only. We get ship interiors (hahahahahahaha) - you guessed it - pancake only. That's how you kill a feature. With indifference and neglect.

it's a feature! You'll get a little flicker and then the glorious amazing grey border once you get close enough to a planet. What are you complaining about? I would like the option to turn the grey border orange to match the GUI, or maybe just auto shutdown the game and restart you back in on your monitor.

On a serious note. the clown who thought that 2d screen was a good idea should now be asking people "would you like fries with that?" for his employment.

Not really... Software development is usually a lot of trial and error, sometimes an idea is good on paper but not so good in practice, that's why proof of concepts are often made. In this sad example the proof of concept is what we will be left with.
