No further VR development is both expected and makes sense

Not really... Software development is usually a lot of trial and error, sometimes an idea is good on paper but not so good in practice, that's why proof of concepts are often made. In this sad example the proof of concept is what we will be left with.
Sorry, cannot agree with this. It was a daft idea to go with a 2D panel floating in space a few metres from the players view point with a restricted field of view. Heck even 2D only head look would have been better than the abomination we have now.

It is currently impossible to land on a planet, disembark and look up to the skies. Who on Earth thought that was acceptable?

I think that this thread may be the appropriate place to ponder the irony of the gift I received from my wife on my birthday last weekend...

...that's right. A VR headset.

I'm beginning to suspect that she's secretly spending time on these forums and that this is an example of highly sophisticated next-level trolling.

PSSSST... I'll let you know a big secret only VR people know!
It can be used for other games, not only Elite Dangerous! 😂
Yes, you read that correctly! :D Try Half Life: Alyx first. Elite's not good for a first experience anyway because of the likely nausea.

PS: which headset? And welcome to "boxheads"

Oh yes.... definitely get into Half Life Alyx - it is amazing

But don't forget, Horizons is still there and is a truly stunning game in VR - just start off gently as it ain't too forgiving on the old motion sickness front! Oh, and you'll need voice attack to make it workable - but when it is, you won't go back to playing by keyboard - there's nothing like telling your crew what to do!

It's a Rift S she managed to get at a very decent price.

Horizons is magnificent. Fluid and hugely immersive. Out of interest, I tried Odyssey but I don't even maintain enough frames in space for it not to turn into a vomit inducing nightmare.

I've been playing Alyx too. I accidentally stayed up until 5am this morning playing it and I was surprised to see daylight when I removed the headset.

I have a full HOTAS and pedals setup which I've always had for Elite since it launched (started with an X52 Pro and now have a Warthog) - but Odyssey and a lost control config had sort of forced me back to keyboard and mouse as I wasn't keen on setting everything back up until the game had stabilised.

However, I think that I will go back and configure everything again in Horizons as that really did run beautifully in VR.

I've never tried voice attack -- but I'll have to give it a go.

VoiceAttack is awesome in combination with the available voice packs and plugins like EDDI.

Can only recommend it as the virtual crew really gives a bit of life to the ships.

Lack of VR really kills it for me. I enjoy VR because it immerses you fully into the game, you ARE the pilot. Having to take off the HMD when out of the cockpit to run around on foot would make Oddysey pretty unsellable in my view. Considering many FPS shooters these days are supporting VR, it's not that much of a challenge to add it.

Frankly, I see VR as the future for all games in about 5 years or so and playing on a flat screen would be viewed pretty much like playing on an ultra low spec computer.
Getting in on the ground floor would make ED more popular and Fdev would be fools not to capitalise on that.

My previous config involved Logitech Driving Force GT and pedals, but since I switched TFlightX to T16000 it's no longer needed :). You have a streamdeck? What's your channel? :D
I don't stream (I would be boring af :) ). I just use it as a tactile hotkey replacement for PowerGrid I used before. Practically everything you see in the keyboard section not related to legs is in buttons on the deck.

Pedals would be something I thought about but I think the twist in my stick does it for the most parts.

The T16000 is a cool stick and absolutely affordable. I have gifted two to friends of mine to get them play more regularly :)

Get assetto corsa! The first one. Such a good racing sim. It has matured amazingly well.
It's frequently on supersale - the entire everything for less than £30. It's so good.
WARNING! It was one of the earliest VR games, 2014 or something, so it is quite clunky e.g. its only VR when you are in game.

I still use racing pedals! I even use them for forward and backwards thrust. And my twin sticks for the other stuff. Great fun! Esp in SRV

Misses uses T Flight HOTAS X. Amazingly good HOTAS for the price when you can get them.

I was able to bind everything including the FSS on a Tflight hotas X, but voice attack is way cooler. That said, my wife would kill me if I started yelling "deploy hardpoints!" in the middle of the night! :D
That's why I don't use voice attack. Firstly, my wife strongly dislikes when I talk to myself (no worries, I'm not that weird, the voices in my head tell me I'm fine), and she'd always think I was banging on about something or other. Secondly, I play all my games in English, a language my wife is not familiar with, and she prefers to know what I'm talking about. :) Thirdly, she would not appreciate my yelling orders. :D

I'm calling bull. I bought a CV1 for playing ED, and when the cable died I bought a Rift 2. I have never played any other game than ED on my Rift 2, so if my anecdote is data (and it is, anecdotally), there is no other VR game than Elite Dangerous.

That's why this Odyssey decision is so terrible: it has literally killed the future of VR.
