State of the Game

One "simple" (bc i don't know their engine etc) way would be to modify prefab tiles with noise patterns.
That way you can generate a near infinite number of patterns without breaking the trick.
I believe that's what Horizons does, which is why repeating patterns (typically of craters) were only ever noticeable on really smooth planets. On anything with vertical terrain variations they get lost in the noise.

That's just semi correct - yes everything has a pattern.
But: the trick is to hide the obvious patterns and this can be done. One "simple" (bc i don't know their engine etc) way would be to modify prefab tiles with noise patterns.
That way you can generate a near infinite number of patterns without breaking the trick.
But here they had just 2 stamps and put them just everywhere.
Yes.
I was like God had a week to create the world but he forgot about it, made "this will have to do" rushed hocus-pocus on Saturday and on Sunday...
Well, Sunday is sacred, you don't work on Sundays.
An on Monday people started to appear trying to live in this mess.

here is the same sphere repeated, with basically the same procedural texture, with the texture edited to produce different surface types (the editing is not colour or pattern) The sky here is also a procedural thing with haze, clouds sun position all procedurally generated
