Yeah we both are different in this regard - I need entrepreneurial freedom to be happy with the game - and ED has nothing of that at all and that is why I can't love it, I guess. I feel like a freaking errand runner in ED, a servant to irrelevant factions most of the time. This isn't a great feeling and not motivating -that is why I play in small bursts, before I have enough of it and go playing some interesting game instead.
I like the "single nobody CMDR trying to make it in the galaxy, but not saving it single handedly" approach of Elite for that reason alone. It's refreshing not being the superhero everyone looks up to, and the game allows me to role-play the game within a decently wide range of options. Although I get what you mean with entrepreneurial freedom too - and I think Elite allows that to some extent with FCs - I have gotten the taste for it and that is why I'm giving X4 an honest go now, also because I'm more interested in massive ships that actually fly and behave as such, unlike the Corvette with its Fiat 500 handling.

X4 is difficult to draw me in at the moment, because my muscle/brain memory is so finely tuned towards Elite, but I feel (right now at least) that it has the better longevity prospect from now on in than Elite, as in I will probably get bored of EDO well before I do so because I'm only at the beginning of X4 but also because the latter seems to be a lot deeper in terms of gameplay mechanics.

And then there's MSFS2020 for my exploration needs (I struggle with NMS because to me whenever I boot it up it just feels like a proc-gen tech demo, not a 'place' to play in) - they only just announced a massive performance boost update (~20fps increase on Ultra settings, showcased via video and apparently using almost the same config as my PC! I am exite!) with graphical upgrades at the same time, DirectX12 support incoming, and frequent (bi-monthly iirc) updates, taking turns between under-the-hood fixes and improvements (hur hur) and new content. Such a stark contrast to what I'm used to when it comes to my favourite space game.

Have you tried X4? Might be right up your alley!
I played both X3 intensively - I'm not fond of the space highways introduced in X:Rebirth - but I might buy X4 at some point in time. For now I poke around in subnautica and NMS - still disliking it's art design, but there is a lot to do and see in NMS - it doesn't feel like landing on a planet in ED though - it never feels lonely at all. So I will still as well play EDH once in a while, because it has a quite different feel to it - well, if EDH will be as dark as EDO is, then it's the end of it, and I'll uninstall it. Currently it feels like a relationships coming to it's end - and like in real life, when it is at it's end, it's better to part than to endlessly suffer.

X games develop most of the time in 3 phases - at start you try to get some wealth and reputation to errect your first factories and factory complexes, have some universe traders going and so on. In phase 2 your empire is growing and you more and more feel the need to develop your own military and station them strategically. In phase 3 you have so many factory complexes and military bases all over the place, that you are basically forced to do the military stuff most of the time - hopping from one battlefield to the next.

If you have played Fallout 4 - it feels the same there - once you had enough settlements going, one of those always needed help and your exploration time was basically over and you had to manage your settlements more often than not in person, because otherwise the game design wasn't in favor of your settlement, regardless how well you have enforced it. It is in X games pretty much the same in phase 3 - so eventually be careful not to have too large of an empire, because then it will keep you busy managing it.

Its why FidelityFX CAS inclusion in Update5 is the most interesting thing for me. I dont see basic optimizations getting EDO a 50% performance boost or better, and it kinda needs it. DLSS 2.0 requires DX12, and only works on some NVidia cards. AMD FidelityFX SuperResolution however works on both AMD and NVidia cards, works in DX11, and works on consoles. If they can get that working in the coming months it would provide a pretty big performance gain even if nothing else imrpoves. The fact they are integrating FidelityFX APIs now is a promising step.

Down to Earth Astronomy made this video about it

I kinda like the sharpening effect but don't see much effect from it other than that, but then I run the game at native res and ss1.0.

My only familiarity with DLSS is with CP2077, it's indeed a life saver but the artifacting it creates (like a noise filter) isn't very nice.

Then again CP2077 runs rings around Elite visually despite it at least and it's pretty stable and consistent performance wise. The constant fluctuations in Elite are the what do my head in the most, as well as the early 2010s look of a lot of assets.

That is because SuperResplution isn't in yet. CAS allows me to run 4k at as=.85 with very little loss of quality, so it's a ~15% boost in performance. At ss=1 it's basically just a pretty sharpener.

SuperResolution should provide a considerably larger gain though, and it's promising FD is looking at the FidelityFX suit in general. DLSS depends on the setting. At the highest quality setting it should provide a small boost but look better than native. At lower settings the boost is very large, but quality decreases. In Death Stranding the impact is quite spectacular for example.

Are you kidding me ? Do you really consider that in the current state the graphic engine works ?
It's one of the most basic graphics engines on the market and they are not able to make it work in an acceptable way. I don't even mean properly, just acceptably.

Just select the bugs that are the easiest and fastest to fix. And that's what they mostly did. There's a reason why so many players complain that FDev doesn't care about important bugs.
Why would i even consider anything, when i can just go to the Screenshot thread and put a random image out of there, and go "Wooooooooooow"

Enginge works alright better then anywhere else i have seen. Oh wait, did you discovered a Space Sim game that looks better than this, that none of us know about?

Star Citizen.

I see myself out...

(It looks better in many instances though)
