VR - First Person On Foot VR Works in Odyssey

What are these rumors I am hearing that the glitch was "fixed" with update 5?

EDIT: Just tried it out and it is working for me the same as it was before.

It still works, but it seems it no-longer clips you inside a transparent avatar. Instead it plonks the camera on top of the av's head.

Which makes you feel kinda absurdly tall in stations ;)

Anyone else having an issue where the camera now defaults to the left of the CMDR now? No longer on top of the head for me for some reason but always to the left, like a 2nd person view if you will.

EDIT: Weird, it's back to normal now. Must have been an aberration.

Obviously whoever was involved in implementing VR has either left or was let go,and the crew that's there now doesn't want to work on VR or just not smart enough to make it happen.

or the game engine simply can't handle it at acceptable frame rates...

I took a break after Odyssey released putting in 3k hours into ED in VR up to that point. I miss ED and wanna play but Odyssey barely runs. I use a Quest 2. Is the Index any better? It’s pretty much unplayable. Am I missing something?

The display device has no bearing on how the game performs (EDIT: ...other than in that a higher resolution and/or field of view device tends to ask for larger resolution frames, nominally). The basic thing you can do, as ususal, is it trade resolution and other graphical fidelity for fps, if you find that acceptable.

Here it is 2023 and trying this out.. anyone out there to verify if this works still or patched out. When I try the plink key sequence the camera ends up in the floor upside down. So, for now just doing over the shoulder cause Im tired of looking at the garbage resolution on the normal mode during exploration.

It stopped working in an early Update after some camera suite bugs were fixed. The nearest we can do is reposition an existing camera view and physically move into our avatar - though now the avatar body will disappear when the view clips into it so no more looking down at your feet leaving footsteps in alien soil 😕

Yeah I was able to drive the free cam into the right spot.. but since that isnt saved when you toggle in/out pointless.

The tips on setting up a VA macro in thai thread still helped me get the over the shoulder view automated at least! Just happy to not be staring at "max aliased view" anymore in a continent way.

I was happy to discover that thread but sadly can confirm the 1st person VR "workaround" makes the camera stuck in the ground in current version 4.0.19.03
I'm personally using the external cam with its default behind or far, over the shoulder 3rd person view.
I don't seem to be able to enter SRV or interact in general (scan plants) when in this mode though, so it's only when walking from point A to point B.

Hoping VR improvements will happen in the near future as it seems more and more people are picking up VR and ED is definitely awesome in VR!

Just getting back into Elite after a few years. I bought Odyssey recently and glad to see this still works.

For first person, I simply manually move the free cam in front of my characters head and then hit the enable ship control buttons and good to go.

Now it's late 2025, and Frontier clearly never had any intention of bringing VR into on-foot landings in Odyssey, even though they did hint at that to placate the calls for VR after Odyssey was review-bombed by the VR player base that was left to suffer the experience of 2D flat screen while walking about with their expensive HMDs.

So given all that, what is the latest on the keybinds needed and their order to get VR working in Odyssey while walking?

Missed this message. Can you clarify what you mean by enabling "ship control buttons"?
I can move around in 3rd person camera but cannot interact with anything.
If you have a solution for this, I'm all hear.

There are two whole sections in general control options, for "Camera Suite", and "Free Camera", and once you have entered the camera suite, it will by default overlay a HUD that shows your bindings (toggleable).

...so it is possible to switch over to the "vanity camera" (default is Left CTRL+Left Alt+Space), unlock it from your player avatar (freecam), "drive" it over to as close in front of your character's face as its hitbox allows (this can be finicky), and once there lock it back to the avatar, so that if follows you walking.

...but, as established, you can not interact with anything in this camera mode, nor see the gameplay HUD, including the big red warning that one of the omnipresent triggerhappy guards has singled you out for an identity scan.

Good for a stroll, though. :)

(The camera can also become "scraped off" of you, if you walk into something. :7)
