Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Ok, if for you P2W is not about one guy winning and the other loosing because of money I understand that you can label the actual scheme in SC P2W.
For me, only scheme where P2W means giving advantage against other players are problematics.

That’s not even the biggest concern for me, because I actively avoid other people in games :D. The issue I have with P2W is that it creates an antagonistic platform of Player Vs Developer. It’s in the developers best interest to frustrate the player, rather than challenge the player. A regular game might setup a gameplay loop where mining is dangerous, skill based, and fun. A P2W developer knows that if they make it tedious and pointless then people will pay to skip it.
Now you have a gameplay loop that is problematic and when people complain some portion of the community will remind them that they could just skip it with a little cash.
It’s predatory and deceptive and exactly the sort of thing I don’t want to support and exactly the sort of thing that ruins people (not hyperbole)

It makes more sense to buy ships now, since you’re not trying to skip content as much as avoid repeating it, but it still feeds into a very negative loop. There is absolutely no excuse for selling cash in the released game: if the content is so boring that people will pay extra to skip it, the devs should address that instead.

I know that here of all places talking about repetitive/boring game loops is tone deaf, but can you imagine if people could skip to the end of engineering by putting a fiver in FDevs pocket? It would never change, at least we’ve seen some changes and can hope and dream of improvements. They didn’t financially disincentivize improvement.

No, ED future is tied to SC because ED is driven by investors. Investors choose or not to give budget to dev. And those investors are not blind to the competition.

(A) ED just went toe to toe with SC via EDO. They don’t seem to be shying away from the competition.

(B) FDev’s dev focus isn’t 'driven by investors'. They do what they do and, as an AIM-listed company, people buy their shares or don’t. They have one significant shareholder with a place on the board (Tencent, 9% stake, 1 seat on the 7 person board).

(C) Ummm, hellooooo?

When discussing the investment money in their financial blog, CIG firewall it from player funding. IE for 2019:

Total Pledges & Income: $60,717,000
Total Costs Capex & Investment: $70,431,000
= -$9,715,000
Cumulative Net Position: -$2,720,000

But...

Cumulative Net Position After Investments: $60,530,000

Due to the $45m in 2018 & $17.25m in 2019.

Wow this thread is moving fast. Just wanted to respond to this comment:

Elite so far has only given up on VR on foot (which is a big thing for me, so I won't accept it lightly), and maybe ship interiors.
OSX / MacOS was given up on too.

Yes, yes, you can bootcamp, it's "Apple's fault" for drivers, but when other companies were managing to develop and support Macs natively, FDev just seemed to give up on it.
People have pointed out the similarities statements they've made to last-gen consoles, so be interesting if they're deemed too hard or not worth the ROI and dropped as well.

I guess seeing what state SC is in at the end of the year will be interesting, and if the supposed big push to increase development pays off.

Ci¬G recently moved the location of the shaders subfolder to here... I've highlighted it. It's a reasonably good practise to delete it after a major patch...but otherwise won't fix the issues you're having. Tweaking your system settings, setting a fixed pagefile of 1.5 times system RAM on an SSD and the like will sort out basic performance issues but otherwise there's plenty of workarounds for some common issues in game...some, not all :)

Thank you for pointing out where the shader folder is! 😎 saved me searching for it.
How do I set the page file? (1.5x16 = 24Gb).
Thanks for the help! 🙂

Thats a standard Windows thing. For Win 10:

Console versions being dropped in November as well ;)

Mostly the HRTs. I tried the group one once in my Mustang Alpha and I was having a hard time damaging the freelancer in the group. I'm not sure if that was a bug or a firepower to shields mismatch.

Sometimes I do the "Destroy the monitor droids" mission for 20K. Nice money but they are extremely easy so not very engaging.

I'm sneaking up on 200K. I'll likely blow through a good chunk of that pretty soon though. I want to try the ground vehicles, so that would be renting a Cutlass and one of the buggies at a minimum, right?

[Edit] Oh, and yeah around Hurston. I think each planet has it's own reputation system? I don't get much in the way of missions when I hop around, at any rate. They seem to like me at Hurston.

If you can get yourself into a Avenger Titan, any of the current bounty hunter missions would be doable. You are about 1/2 a million short.

If you get to the top level bounty missions with northridge around hurston, you can get about 95k per mission. The mission involves killing 3 targets, one of them being a hammerhead. The npc hammerheads are pretty squishy, but you still need a proper build to take them out.

You can rent a buggy and then just go to a ground location with vehicle spawn facilities. Blue building with the two little pads. Won't need the cutlass unless you want to fly the buggy somewhere else. isnt too much point to that. you can just drive around to see how the vehicles are. Unless you rent a ROC and then you can do ROC gem mining. Then you'll need the cutlass.

Mining hadinite makes decent money. Best bets are on arial and aberdeen. Also best chances of people looking for ROC miners there too though. Players can "steal" your mined gems out of the back of the ROC.

I was gonna offer up some UEC too, but saw this 🍻

My best experience with Elite was that beginning period of discovering the game and slowly earning enough credits to get into the bigger ships. At a close second was downgrading from those big ships back to the smaller ones for the highest level challenges (High CZs in an Eagle. Hard to top the rush of it.)

That's why I don't care for Pay-to-Skip mechanics. If your game is worth my time, I would rather play it, than pay to not play it. Who knows what you would miss? I don't mind if other people make that choice. It's their time and their money. Still, I feel that they are cheating themselves. I've seen a few friends I introduced to Elite very much "Not Get It" by grinding immediately to an Anaconda (especially with exploits) and feel like they beat the game.

Oh yeah, thanks guys but I like to be on the scrounging end of things to start with.

But seriously, thank you for the generosity!

Ok, i get that...

Offer is always open if you change your mind :) I have played the game a lot and in 18 months of persistence i have gathered a lot of credits i don't need, i don't mind handing to people who can make better use of it than i can at this point.

LOL, there we go. Knew it was coming.

Whenever there is a criticism, the alpha card gets played. Otherwise its the best game ever.
Because you always refute the state of alpha while in fact, and reality, SC is still a real alpha !
The new player experience in all alpha games is absent. NPE start to be worked in beta only. You were lost in city ? There is a minimap in SQ42, perhaps the minimap will be added to SC later, we don't know. For now, just follow the signs written "spaceport". You want a turorial in game to learn how to dogfight ? In 3.14, capacitors will completly change how dogfight work. You want to learn the radar system ? Same thing, all will change in 3.14. You were stuck in the hangar door ? Too bad but after few days of playing, almost everybody learn to avoid this problem. You see a black hole in the ground ? First time you walk on it and die, the others you just wait that the texture pop and you can continue to play... You see ? It's an alpha.

Can't be true. There are people in this very thread who will tell you SC is the most fun experience they have ever had in a computer game and they almost never get bugs like you describe. Its probably your fault you have a potato PC and didn't install the game on a SSD.

However, regarding your last couple of points, and i'm sure the proponents of SC here will agree, that SC when you are not sure with how to do stuff can be a bit frustrating and for your first outings its best to have someone along to show you the ropes. Not that is exactly a positive thing for SC, but there is a lot to learn. Last time i played i couldn't find my way to the spaceport and wandered around lost for ages until someone offered to show me the way. I doubt i would have ever found it if it wasn't for them. Unfortunately my journey ended not long after that, after taking off, going too high, hitting the ceiling, and clipped into it, leaving me stuck there. At that point i quit.

But it was probably all my fault and not a problem with the game. No siree!

Hold on... somethings coming through... something... uugggghhh...... yes, almost there.... ITS ALPHA!

I mean, some of that is just a complicated game is complicated.

The first time I played odyssey, i took a taxi to a different station. (love the taxis) at the next station i knew i had no ship there and would need to transfer a ship over and i couldnt figure it out for the life of me. there are consoles all over the place that look like you should be able to do ship management stuff, but you cant.

Eventually googled it and figured out you have to go to the npc that sells ships and do the transfer there. There was a ship selling location, but no npc behind the desk. Still not sure if that was a bug or not, but ended up taking a taxi to a different station. I didnt have a fit because i couldnt figure it out......

So who decide if, for instance, a switch to dx12/vulkan for the Cobra engine is needed to be able to release ED on new console ? DB ? I've read that he only owns 32% of shares. It's enough to decide for the whole company ? So he is the only one to decide ? It's DB that have decided that the EDO alpha was in pretty good shape and can pass from alpha to gold without beta ay the risk to hurt the licence ? It's him that have decided to stop work on VR on foot midway ?

If you look at the games actively worked by FDEV, don't you see that ED is the only one to use heavy netcode ? And for what I see, it's the only one to use VR also. For what I know, ED was announced for a 10 years cycle, we are near the end. So, they will continue to improve it to a SC level while none of the FDEV other games need all the heavy improvements of Cobra needed for this task ? They work secretly on ED2 on the new Cobra2 engine ?

It is very annoying that this thread keeps getting dragged back to how bad Odyssey is. It is, but that's not the topic of this thread.

It's interesting that it is the SC fans who keep doing the dragging. It makes it look like they can't find anything good to say about SC so they find something bad to day about something else?

If you think SC is good tell us why. There will be people who disagree with you but if you want to argue with them, do so with facts about your experience in SC. Please let's keep the thread on topic.
