Well… it turned out to be the case back 2012… although at the time Chris Robbers claimed it was a nearly ready for Alpha prototype that Chris “and his team” had been developing for over a year. Not only that, it had been made by Crytek… for free. So it’s not surprising that that’s still the case.Is SC actually not a game, but machinima?

same with in game chat now. every play session there is at least one person that brings up elite.

The in-game SC global chat?
Yes of the 3-4 sessions i've had there always seems to be an (ex) Elite player asking questions, and getting help from an existing player.
Similarly i think i've also seen every session someone commenting on a bug. Something like "err my screen has gone black when i did X" "you need to fully restart sorry" or "i'm trying to Y and it's not working" "yeah try this or that, known issue".
The game is not perfect, twice when trying to quit the game it's crashed and not exited gracefully (i think this might be more the Arena Commander, which has never started, and goes into an infinite loading screen - probably caused by not being able to select a ship to use), the NPCs standing on chairs, laggy/undetected actions like sitting in chairs. But they're livable with.
So it's good to be aware of the issues, or even Agony Aunt's concerns around ethics, but likewise i'm not invested in the game (cost sink / emotionally etc) and think it's really got promise and doesnt deserve some of the historical labels people throw at it.
Anyway going to fire up and see if i can super-cruise to another planet

It's not a matter of leaving...or staying or feeling strangely betrayed by someone who tries out either game after being a life long fan of one or t'other...some folk play and enjoy both games quite openly. The competition thing between ED and SC seems to be locked into the closed mindset of some and I've absolutely no idea why. It's almost as bitter and protracted as the Playstation v Xbox nonsense.No, as Cotic was suggesting some of the "I've left ED" posts on youtube are a little dodgy. That real players are leaving I'm sure is true, like Kate.
There's a larger youtube/twitch audience for SC of course. People play ED, they watch SC
Kate still plays and enjoys ED...as does Susie who joined Intrepid and me t'other night for a bit of SC... this silly tête-à-tête only seems to matter to those who've only played or enjoyed one or the other or finds some personal reason to dislike one or the other...which is a point of note in itself.
There are literally hundreds of people who have nice things to say about both SC and ED, some who play both, enjoy both for very different reasons and see no conflicted interests in doing so...which is about where I sit on the whole SC is better than ED and vice versa clap-trap I keep reading here and elsewhere.

also, for anyone new. SC has a sorta built in guide system where existing players can set themselves up to help new players.

That makes more sense indeed. Which just further illustrates what a missed opportunity SC is. There really are some immersive qualities to it that are not found elsewhere. If it stopped pretending to be everything and anything all at the same time and just focused on those few things it does well..
Big if. And CR would need to be shown the door yet again.

@Mole HD dear kind unbiased sir, answer me this - Does Star Citizen require a good solid internet connection to play reliably (relatively-speaking), even when other players are not around? I feel like I read somewhere that NPC movements are generated server-side. Space Engineers is like this, where a network connection hiccup can have disastrous effects. Contrast this to ED, where my Internet can go down for like 5 minutes before I even notice, as long as I'm alone in my own instance.
