Odyssey Going Forwards

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

Although I agree and support that decision (to delay console release), actions speak louder than words.
I won't be celebrating or cheering just yet. I want to see results first. Sadly my faith in FDev is very very very low. I'd loved to be proven wrong.

The only way I will reinstall Odyssey is IF you deliver on the original kickstarter promises: a stunning planetary tech worth exploring, ship interior and a working multi-crew. Nobody cares about the Pew Pew FPS. As far as I am concerned, you can remove it completely from Odyssey. I won't miss it at all.

they actually demand 30 fps
My laptop (i7-9750h, gtx1660ti) fails to reach that in certain settlements.
30 is higher than 5

i've seen 3090 at 40(going as low as 31) on settlements, imagine a ps4

It's all just corporate talk. Kinda like politicians will make meaningless speeches but with very nice sounding words and phrases. The responsibility is towards the shareholders and not the players.
No, the players also have some responsibility for everything that happens.
The community should have been more active in demanding information from fdev about the development of the odyssey.

So many promises made, so many promises broken. Does this mean anything will change? I guess we will have to way and see.
  • The Grind...for God's sake, grind upon grind upon grind. Is that what ED has become or is that what it has always been? With the release of EDO, adding 3 new levels of grind is not just a slap in the face but also a kick in the nards. I get the purpose is to keep asses in chairs and that there is supposed to be a bit a grind but this level of grinding is insulting and just...damn.
  • NEW SRV's...we want them. Rolling around shooting RNJesus rocks for mats gets pretty old after a while. How about a hover type SRV like the drones that buzz around the bases and outposts.
  • Ship interiors (previously promised), we want them. We don't want the Star Trek teleporter. When the CM says that they don't believe that ship interiors add anything to game play, how about putting a pole out to the community? They may be surprise at the results but probably not. They have heard this before.
  • New ships, we want them. It's been over two years since the Krait Phantom was put into the game. Where is the Panther Clipper?

Maybe I'll log back on at the beginning of the New Year unless something drastically changes.

I would just like to say that I've never been part of a game where players have such a strong voice in the development of a game. Elite has the potential to be such a great game given the emphasis on hearing player input. Sure, it's impossible to please everyone, but it's great to see how much input the Elite player communities have had.

I appreciate the open communication, and would like to offer a suggestion in terms of said communication:

Throughout the update process, I have often seen things get "re-balanced," but with NO indication of which direction that balance went. Things like BGS and mat grinds can already be frustrating for players, and adding ambiguity to that frustration isn't helpful. I don't think it requires a ton of detail, but just a little something that helps those of us that don't obsess over the forum posts and issue trackers get some context. I think a couple small summary details would help avoid the player base feeling like FDEV is just telling us "hey, we changed something, YOU go figure it out now." I have a limited amount of time to play, and don't want to spend that limited time experimenting just to try to guess which way the re-balance went.

Given what's going on and the way former employees talk about fdev, I'm beginning to fear that it's too complicated for current fdevs.

This makes me smile I’ve said before i too share the vision that @David Braben has the fact that this game has still stood the test of time & most 40 plus game geeks want to keep this a reality

keep doing what you do best & chip away and sculpture this game into most amazing game that lets you blaze your way through the galaxy in your own unique way

FDEV DEVOPS keep working on it there’s a few of us who really appreciate the challenges happening in it landing

Ship interiors were never the point of Odyssey and were not advertised as being a feature. This has been known since 2020 at least. For all its faults, Fdev did make it clear that ship interiors would not be coming to Elite for the foreseeable future. Adding them to the game at this point would detract a considerable amount of resources away from all the other work that needs to be done. "Make ship interiors" would be an all-hands-on-deck sized project of immense size considering the scale and complexity of ED's ships. New models, textures, lighting, new sound work, new mechanics, and tons of planning and design to produce the layouts in the first place.

A large ship like a Cutter would have the interior space of an entire Odyssey outpost, if not more. Such a "feature" would be the size of an entire paid expansion in terms of development effort, especially this late in the game. They need to fix the content people already paid for first.

Very good positive message David appreciate the open honesty. Hope the new strategy and plan works out Odyssey is starting to slowly show promise and the Dev updates and more open comms with the community is a great step.

Thank you - I play it on xbox but for the good of the game its worth getting it right.

Best wishes to the dev team.

Anyone know how to reply on mobile without quotation!?

As a console player I'm constantly told I wouldn't want the game in its current state but I say that I absolutely WOULD rather have it than have nothing. How about release it to console and let US make the choice whether to buy it or wait, we've lived with bugs since its release on console and none of them have halted my enjoyment of the game

I can understand your disappointment and do not in any way presume to gainsay that, but based on my experiences with Odyssey in its current condition, I sincerely believe this is very good news for both PC and console players.

So, we still have to fight the issue tracker with its myriad of years old bugs to try to get our reports up to the level where fdev may deign to look at them, but at least there will be another update. And the expected console delay is now admitted. There are no plans to fix the issue tracker. And we're supposed to praise the design decisions that brought us multiple layers of workarounds for poor design, because they're oh so well meant. Never mind the business decisions that prevented testing or cleanups.
