Odyssey Going Forwards

Focusing on PC is the right choice, that console players have to take a hit is sad, but in the end it might be worth it for both parties. Killing off the console market for EDO doesn't seem like a thing they would happily consider, so I won't side with you on that one.
I agree that right now it is the right choice. However, it only shows Frontier's inability to support platforms other than PC. We've got here in small steps. First, it was said that Odyssey would arrive on all platforms simultaneously, since at that time it was natural that any update Elite gets would be available on all three. Then came the announcement that consoles would follow only in the autumn. Then the developer update that bugfixes were putting extra strain on the team, and they had to "re-evaluate" their development roadmap, etc. Now a more clear admission of console versions being delayed indefinitely. It's not hard to see the next step being cancelling them altogether, even giving the reason of decreasing console player numbers, which, in the first place, will be the result of this development mishap. So they essentially keep delaying the console release until there won't be enough players to make it worth doing at all. Not deliberately, but because of their inability to fix, improve and update the core experience in time.

As a console player I'm constantly told I wouldn't want the game in its current state but I say that I absolutely WOULD rather have it than have nothing. How about release it to console and let US make the choice whether to buy it or wait, we've lived with bugs since its release on console and none of them have halted my enjoyment of the game

David posting on here is welcome.

An acknowledgement of the issues is welcome.

Further acknowledgement that work is ongoing, and recognition that this is a longer process than planned, even if not accompanied by explicit admission that the game was released too soon, is also welcome, as is commitment to add to it going forwards. I think long term, console players will benefit form this too. No point rushing to convert something that isn't working right.

I think everyone is going to need more - much more. But... a realization that when standing in a hole, at least questioning how best to use the shovel going forwards might be wise, is also welcome, and no less so for being overdue.

A company's ethos, and culture, always comes from the top. If they stop loving what they're doing, and forget caring about who they're producing their product for, they are almost always doomed, regardless of the calibre of their individual employees. Whatever the current situation, Elite has given us all enough happy hours to hope that this does not describe Frontier.

If the original vision of the game has changed I think as a paying customer I deserve to know. You and devs talked about ship interiors years ago, talked about EVA walks, all great ideas content creators and other cmdrs feel have great gameplay potential. If you are not going in that direction.... well where are you going? base building? world editing?

Because your own community manager said that no, ship interiors are not coming, devs are not doing that. And in his opinion theres not enough gameplay to justify the work. Do you understand, do any of you in this company understand that logging on and off to farm guardian module blueprints or to farm data on crashed satellites is not a "gameplay loop"? all because you decided night vision is now an unlockable feature? That scanning copy paste specimens 500m-1km away from each other is not fun? that having to go to each engineer to make a new build is a waste of time, why can't we pin modifications if we did all the grind already, met the requirements, leveled them up to grade 5? that entering supercruise and sitting around for minutes at a time, alt tabbing to watch a show or a movie is not good gameplay? Why did you say we would finally be able to walk around stations, if all that was just a couple of rooms where we can't interact with anything or anyone?

I'm tired. Please just show a roadmap. Enough empty promises.

now i ask: was it THAT hard to write things down on a clear manner like this?
thanks for admitting the mistakes (a big step to frontier really), and thanks for focusing on something that's already out for the public (which was one of my main gripes), i am for once glad to hear this news, even tho i still can't play this is the communication i'd like to hear, plain, simple, and straight on point.

thanks lord brebus, can't wait to play your game again, o7

Console players, i know it might sound frustrating but, if they release odyssey as they did on PC, im plain sure you'd like to wait and even have it postponed till it has a good performance to old consoles, else you would have worse issues than pc is having rn

(yes im hopeful once more, maybe i'm wrong to do it again but oh well)

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.
thank you, we truly love the game and want the best for it, despite frustration at how EDO launched ... looking forward to new things and exciting changes.... o7

I think it's fair to say that this is likely the last chance you have to get this right. Lip service and then failing to follow through is what got you in this situation and your good-will within the ED community is gone. At this point, even simply delivering is probably not enough to gain back some of that good-will; you need to go well above and beyond.

As for people being disappointed with the odyssey roadmap, of course they were. there was no roadmap at all.
As for your concern about the quality of the odyssey only after the release of the odyssey, that's fine, as they say in my country "better late than never". but you know, what prevented you from being concerned about the quality of the product before the release? on the rare occasions you did tell the community something about the odyssey you did talk about how awesome it was?
And now that I feel cheated, I no longer have any trust in you.
There's a saying in my country "it's too late to drink the borjomi when your kidneys have failed".
No, I love the elite, so I will stay here to praise you when you do something right, but, more often, to scold you when you do something wrong, but, no trust in you is out of the question.

Personally, I'd like to hear why it was deemed acceptable to push out what was so obviously a bug riddled mess after the paid pre-alpha from a developer. I would like to hear it from the horses mouth.

It's all just corporate talk. Kinda like politicians will make meaningless speeches but with very nice sounding words and phrases. The responsibility is towards the shareholders and not the players.

Thank you so much for the communication on this - definitely comforting to hear and hints at the massive work being done! Enjoying what we have on the basis of knowing that it's going to keep going and until this forum post it felt in limbo... now I feel a lot more comforted to hear at least the priority/direction and coming from the top and acknowledgment of the issues.
HAIL BRABO!

It wouldn't make it past the Sony an Microsoft Qaulity approval

Thank you David for taking time to reassure everyone that your all committed as ever to providing a game experience that we all love. There may be criticism out there by a few but please pass on our thanks from the massive player base that appreciate all the had work that you all do for us. We look forward to any and all updates and changes incoming.
