Odyssey Going Forwards

Thank you a lot for your clear statement, @David Braben.

I personally also was a bit disappointed with the Odyssey release, but mainly because it focuses a lot on FPS and FPS just isn't my cup of tea. In fact I was hoping for making my ships a home for myself with their interiors in VR and walking around an exploring Dav's Hope and the Guardian Sites - also in VR.

That said I totally understand that the issues that were introduced need to be ironed out first, and I appreciate your acknowledgment of that fact. I still want to emphasize that after the tech is fixed and the game loop is improved - and Odyssey has landed on console eventually, that a full VR experience for Odyssey on PC and also ship interiors both should be a thing on the further roadmap. I remember you talking about ship interiors on very early development diaries, and saw the light in your eyes. Please really make that happen.

Fantastic news. It means I can go safely back to horizons and not fear to have the Odyssey performance inflicted on it anytime soon. That motivated me to take the HOTAS and rudder pedals out of the storage closet again. Thank you! 😊

Who would've guessed: Microsoft and Sony do have QA and they have requirements that can be checked. Turns out Odyssey does not fulfill the requirements to be released on consoles, so the logical step is to "improve" the performance (read: create something that at the very least comes close to something that deserves to be called "performance") on PC as otherwise all the work might turn out to be in vain if the console version cannot be released.

Alright.
That's bad news for PC players since we have - more or less directly - the confirmation that Frontier considers the possibility of Odyssey not releasing on consoles to be probable at least (otherwise you would not make such a decision).

What I also constantly see is that these FPS drops are completely random (besides some connection with glass). Whenever the situation allows it, I restart the game to get fully back to a constant 60 FPS. And this can't be a general performance problem, as it would always and reproducibly happen in the same places, which is obviously not the case (again, exceptions: glass). To me it looks more like some scripts are going crazy, or at least something not directly related to GPU or CPU performance.
yah it is definitely some optimization to be done, cause i've related not too long ago that (even if performance without these optimizations IS low), when i disembark on some stations, hangar is at 40 fps or so, i go in the concourse, 15, go back, stays at max 20/25, like, what changed? nothing, should be on 40 but isn't, so definitely something on the background is causing this specific issue, imagine the other ones.

i am still a bit mad i can't play the game properly, but this really made me a bit hopeful about the game, looking forward to play it again (since playing in 10-40 fps range is not enjoyable, if at least was stable 30..)

Thanks David.

I honestly am happy with today’s announcement, it makes sense to sort this out on PC first before beginning to get it sorted for consoles.

Unfortunately, I have been playing Horizons on PS4 less and less lately, I’ve suffered many performance issues on my Pro in recent months, that have driven me away gradually.

By the time Odyssey hits console, I will likely have a PS5 and be winding down my time with PS4.

In the meantime, I will invest some time on my PC CMDR, and keep an eye on the development there.

Good call braben.

Now... about the mechs I was asking for...

What exactly stops you from doing this in the other direction from a technical stand point? Let's just say for a future expansion, you work FIRST on getting it to work correctly and cleanly on the stable hardware provided by the consoles, and THEN work on the nightmares of randomly matched hardware that is PC? Is there a real reason for this beyond appeasing a PC player base? Like a REAL reason? Would it not be EASIER to secure a working game on set hardware first?

Idk, probably because the entire playerbase is on PC?

I'm very happy with this announcement (altho it should have been made earlier). I was waiting for Mr. Braben to make another statement about Odyssey since I have had the feeling he wasn't there for us anymore and was just doing finances. I'm happy with this however. It's a new hope.

I'm no physic but I reckon......

1. No news of console release until early next year now.
2. About February they give a date.
3. That date is postponed again for a month or two.
4. After a few months of no new news, Mr. B makes a thread stating that 'due to unseen circumstances, it is unfortunate that we can not release Odyssey for old gen consoles. We are therefore upgrading Odyssey for the new gen consoles. Thanks for your understanding.'
5. Some time late in 2022 Odyssey is finally released for console. But there is no new content anyway and the pc master race has already played, solved and discovered everything.
6. PS4 users say 'sod it' and play something else instead.

Now I'm going to 🤐 before I get banned.

so its either delay or bugs, pick your poison

David, i just want new galaxies that we can make our way to over many months using long-range intergalactic drives. I want new alien civilizations, new Bubbles, really distant places to explore and maybe never return from. All of these things are possible, i just want to know if they are in your plans, and if so, when? These are the things you created in 1984, the stuff i loved as a kid. They should be here in 2021. They are what Elite is all about.

I'm glad to see a comittment to continiung development and bug fixing (I hope for legacy bugs), but, I should have made a bet with myself. I suspected that EDO wouldn't be coming to console this year.

By the time this comes to console I suspect the audience for it on those platforms will be very small. EDO and by extension, Elite Dangerous was already off my radar, even more so now. I hope FDEV can add some meaningful, core-gameplay, spaceship content to bring me back, and not just paint-job of the week for spacesuits, or Thargoid ground troops for a FPS I didn't ask for in this game.

I also hope there's a upgrade for next-gen console hardware which is coming up to 1 year old at this point.

Galaxies are off the table. period.
There is no reason to go outside the galaxy when we havent even touched any of it

FDev should just ditch Elite on console and concentrate on making it the best it can be as a PC only title. Because, as like many other games, having to gimp features so they will work on both this gen. and last gen. consoles means the game suffers and will never resemble the vision the creator had for this game.
