Odyssey Going Forwards

No, the console players are actually better off, as they will get the best game possible one day and don't have to endure the test phase. IIRC there was no console preordering even.

But the console delay has quite a different aspect too. Certainly, few of us would like to be in Braben's shoes now, having to communicate the decision to FD's investors and telling them they won't meet console release dates because of quality issues and the whole revenue plan shifting and so on and so on. Even if it may be the only wise thing under these circumstances, it's still a bold decision and definitely requires stamina, but he did it anyway. This definitely requires respect IMHO.

Couldn't agree with you more, that was a hard call!

I'll understand the delay on the console but I won't accept you letting the console players alone with the features you'll introduce on the PC.
This is sadly the last nail in the coffin...
I wasn't going to preorder the console release and would have waited to see if it performs adequately on the consoles (xbox series x) with the horizons merge. But now there is for me no reason to buy the game. I'll wait and watch YouTube videos from the PC community...

Consoles will get the DLC when is finished. Thats the reason of the delay, nothing else. No bold decision, no hard call, nothing alike.

Just a product that was not ready for console prime time.

There you go. This is the right decision.

As a fan of most of the Frontier titles (including Disneyland Adventures) whose has seen relatively few major issues with Odyssey, I think this episode has been a case of aggressive strategies that may have lacked a proportionally large focus on execution. This doesn't really trouble me. I figured that you would sort out eventually.

What did trouble me was the damage to the trust that Frontier has built over the years. I view Frontier as a company that has reliably produced a diverse array of sophisticated games that are fun to play with less than the usual level of bugs. I presumed it was due to good software management practices. I don't know why this was different for Odyssey but hopefully it will be an educational exceptional.

The primary focus should be to squash bugs that prevent people from playing ("linedown" issues).

Now go out there and kick some butt.

Still, as always, a stalwart Frontier fan.

A lot of people mention Hello Games and the redemption of NMS.

What Hello Games understands that Frontier does not however is that you cannot prefer one section of the playerbase over another. NMS was released across all platforms simultaneously, and was quick to incorporate the new consoles, and cross play. All of this without detriment to any particular segment of the playerbase.

The problem Frontier have is that in order to please one section of the community, they feel the need to take away from other sections of the player base. This is short sighted.

The playerbase should always be treat as one homogeneous entity. Falling to do so introduces silos, fractures, and generates unnecessary internal negativity, as this forum proves on a daily basis.

@David Braben thanks a lot for shedding some light on the future plans!

We are all waiting for performance and gameplay fixes!

It would be also great to explain what is going on with the issue tracker - current situation with reported issues not being updated for months is one of the things causing frustration in the community. Setting "expired" status is not a way to express your gratitude to the volunteers who helps to make your product better for free!

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

The bad news for console users: It'll be delayed.
The good news for everyone: It'll be fixed before they get it.

Glad "Patch 6" is coming.

Funny thing was I said as a joke "Don't worry - we'll do the beta testing for you console users."
I didn't know it would be true. Glad to hear FD got the message.

Here's another one:
Please don't do that again. Make sure it's right before it's released.
Thank you for your time. :)

Frankly all I want to hear is where is the game going. What are the intentions from a development standpoint. That you have to fix it is obvious but it does nothing to make me want to play the game in the current state.

Every game loop decision made in this screams "what can we do to get maximum grind out of a feature". I mean making scanning flora into a mini-game??? The entire settlement/combat zone addition exists solely to facilitate an new hardware range grind. This isn't game building, it's a psychological fudge to make you think that there's content and its insulting to our intelligence.

What I want to know is where is the game going. What do you want to achieve and why should I stick with you for the journey because right now all it feels like I'm doing is capitulating to a glorified mobile device game loop like those gross idle style ones (ie do the same crap over and over to add some pretty pictures and a psychological sense of achievement because 'yay badge').

Tell me you have more vision than that... Please.

."...when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid..."

Since it is now admitted that the foundation of EDO is not yet solid...Will you now honor my request for a refund of the DLC?
The only way to get a refund is to explain to your credit card company/paypal that the transaction of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey was fraudulent, as you were promised a full product and only received part of it. They'll remove the DLC from your account.

As you can see, I have an accountant at my side and he disagrees I think. Note the pointy feathers and the grumpy expression. See, all those fancy PP & Excel sheets in vain, and who pays all the people and such. Could be other people want their money back and are disappointed, even pointing at yoouu! as being responsible. Never mess with the financial dudes. It's not going to be fun.

For myself not really that surprised or that miffed that its been delayed and that Pc players are again the priority there's only so much they can do, its more the fact on the Tuesday stream last week when asked about consoles it was the usual (as has been for months) "Console continues on track for Autumn release". Surely would have had an inkling at that point what was going on just don't like the dishonesty especially after commitment to be more up front......

Thanks!

IMO, the biggest thing that needs looking into is performance. Not sure if others agree.
That's certainly the thing keeping me in Horizons at the moment. Knowing that I could have lovely smooth 60+ fps visuals simply by logging out and switching to Horizons is too strong a lure for me.

Indeed I want my money back, but Epic Store wont let me refund, tried 5 weeks ago when I saw the horrible (my humble opinion again) "product" I got.

Greetings Commanders.

...

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.
Thanks for the update.

I own the game on two platforms, PC and Xbox One. I didn't put in any time on Xbox yet. I pre-ordered and paid for Odyssey.

On my PC setup, Horizons runs consistently in 2K with around 30 frames per second close to stations, on planets and with complex objects to render - in most situations the game renders around 60 frames per second. With the same settings, even after the latest update, Odyssey renders about 11 frames per second where Horizons would render 30 and Odyssey will max out at 30 frames per second where Horizons would render 60. Odyssey also suffers from lots of weird rendering bugs on my setup where planet textures in super cruise would not load correctly. Stars and their coronas look less detailed in Odyssey (uglier). Light and colors seem off in Odyssey. Interestingly, when I reduce the resolution to 1080p and drop all settings to lowest, that does not change performance in any meaningful way.

Odyssey is basically unplayable for me. Even for a layman it's obvious the changes to the game engine and how it renders objects, calculates light etc. are fundamentally broken. I am not surprised at all that there is no path towards a release on console before these things are fixed at the core. Consoles with their limited hardware capabilities require optimized code. My GPU is uncommon on gaming setups (NVidia Quattro P1000), but it's certainly more capable than the GPU in current generation consoles like the Xbox One S or Playstation Pro 4 I have sitting at home.

I am a fairly new Elite player who just started in 2021. To me, Horizons is still "fresh" and I don't mind "bear with you" on Horizons, while you fix Odyssey. Not a problem. I love Horizons. It's a shame your premature release of Odyssey split the player base where open mode in Horizons is now a ghost town on PC.

A few signs of good faith towards customers who have pre-paid and pre-ordered Odyssey would be appreciated though. Why not grant customers who pre-ordered Odyssey access to the Cobra Mark IV? That does not cost you anything and adds some value for customers they didn't have before. Maybe it's also worth considering smaller content adds to Horizons on all platforms to bridge the time to Odyssey. Maybe add a new ship? A new ship launched fighter or configuration of existing fighters? A few new interesting weapons? Personally, I'd like to see a class 1 plasma accelerator modeled after the one that the ship launched fighters have. These are all LOW EFFORT ways of sucking up to us. I'd appreciate it.

thanks and best regards,

Thank you DB for this long awaited statement. Hope there will come more informtion and transparency.
I hope the bugs breaking gameplay are fixed soon.
As far as I have seen there are a lot of tickets for same issues which leads to showstoppers not beeing confirmed and therefore are not on voting list.

Every commanders who feed the issue tracker:
Please search for existing issues and add your note to them before opening a new one.
Otherwise the bugs have not enough commanders and therefore the issues will not be confirmed and will never be voteable to get them fixed.
