Odyssey Going Forwards

Great message - if a little light on detail - but appreciated.

Now if someone could publish and informed "roadmap" that explained that all of the things we have been told are not in Odyssey will still not be in Odyssey...
Or otherwise, if things have so completely changed, of course ;)

You want a roadmap? You get a roadmap. Might not be accurate, but let's see how it ages...

Replace the last row with "cancelling console release because we realized it's not feasible anymore". :(
IF the game is to have any long term future at all my money is on a console release.....
Whether it comes on last gen machines is another issue.......
But it may not be a bad sign for the longevity of the game if FD announced EDO coming as a ps5/series X title but with the EDH licence carried forward from the Xbox 1 / ps4 version.

Don't get me wrong if FD can get it running on the old consoles the great, but I don't want them to compromise the high end hardware experience just to get it running acceptably on 2013 medium range laptop hardware.

I totally get that owners of the last gen consoles may feel short changed were this to happen. It's a difficult one. It's not an exact equivalence but I remember when half-life was cancelled on the Dreamcast after huge marketing .......it didn't affect me but some of my mates were gutted. Years later I played it on the Dreamcast (it was leaked) and it was not half bad. Certainly ran well enough to be sellable.

Dear @David Braben
thank you for the update on the way forward. Personally I am looking forward to more updates and "sneak-peeks" at things your team is working on. As I am not someone working in software development I have no idea, how long it will take to get to a point that you are satisfied enough with Odyssey to port it to the consoles. Although I never owned a console I do hope that you don't leave the console players out to rot indefinitly unless you plan to discontinue console support, in which case this should be communicated transparently.

Regarding the direction of development: I'd rather see some of the old features, that were never developed to their full potential (or a working state) revisited before another set of new features is added (powerplay, engineering, BGS, actually also the Odyssey features like on foot exploration...). Fire and forget is not the way to go :D

Greetings Commanders.

With the release of Update 5 on 1st July plus a few smaller server updates since, and Update 6 currently in development, I wanted to take a moment of your time to talk about the next steps for Elite Dangerous.

We are aware and fully accept the frustration that many of our players have had with their experience of Elite Dangerous Odyssey. The community have spoken, we have heard the feedback clearly and we will act on that feedback.

As you may remember in our recent development article, the significant amount of updates and development effort that has been done to fix and improve issues since the launch of Odyssey has meant work on our console release has not progressed as quickly as we had hoped. What’s more, we can see that the strides we have made through the last five major updates are positive, but we must continue on with this progress to give the experience that you and we expect on PC.

With those things in mind, we have spent a lot of time discussing and re-evaluating our previous plans and we have made the decision to prioritise the core PC experience for Elite Dangerous. Ultimately, we believe it is right to focus our efforts on the core Elite Dangerous Odyssey experience for the platforms that we have released on, before opening up to more. We know that the work that we do to improve players’ experiences of Elite Dangerous Odyssey on PC will benefit other platforms in the future, but the dates and details of the console platforms are going to change. We do not want to rush into confirming any dates or changes this has on our console release, as we must remain fully focused on the core Elite experience. Only when we feel that the foundation of the PC release is solid, will we be able to re-lay our console roadmap on top.

Elite Dangerous Odyssey is an important step on a complicated journey, and we must get this right, before we can consider moving on to these new platforms.

So what does this actually mean for Elite Dangerous and Elite Dangerous Odyssey?

It means that we will see more game updates over the coming months. We will continue to work through Issue Tracker, fix bugs and improve performance, but we will also be able to explore and add additional features, content and improvements into the game.

We will continue to give open monthly development updates where we discuss WIP content, challenges, the issue tracker and more. We know that the previous levels of detail for the roadmap and developer update have not met expectations, but we are grateful for your patience while we shift and adjust plans, in the face of such clear feedback.

Please remember that our team here at Frontier are working hard to support the game and our community. Behind every bug fix, design decision and community post is a person who cares a lot about giving our players best possible experience. I would ask that everyone remains calm and respectful when sharing their thoughts and feedback.

We all have the same goal and we will get there, together. Please bear with us.

o7 Commanders.

when are you announcing ditching console support? or are you going to string us along a bit longer?

The other thing is that if FD are going to be doing balance passes on things, they should task the CMs with areas to look at now to occupy our minds and feed that back.

If FD can ask for feedback on the vanity camera (out of all the things needing attention :D ) they can, certainly ask about blueprint balance, redundant blueprints etc and start the ball rolling.

Well perhaps DB would not have had to step forward to try and stem the flow away from the game, if they had used the time proved method of Proposals}-Ideas}-Instigation}-Alpha}-then the all important }-BETA (missing in this case) before release. I feel personally that this missing BETA added a major negative to how the expac was presented developed and used to garner more income in time for shareholder's pockets.

Don't get me wrong, in a free society I appreciate the financial need sometimes to add shareholding partners to the mix, but they should not be the major concern or driving force of any company especially with such a customer oriented base as Elite. Perhaps in some ways Chris Roberts system for financing Star Citizen has some merits in this instance, I don't know.

However I have to confess I had over £120.00p invested in his enterprise until I ran out of patience and under the terms clawed back my investment. Noticed lately it still looks exciting but as I am not into PVP having spent quite some time in the Eve Online fraternity which jaundiced my view of PVP in free for all space games, and was pleased that the game I played in the '80,s (this one) allows me into space on terms I can set for playing PVE/PVP.

These are just my thoughts and I do hope Elite blossoms into the wonderful experience I believe it could become.
They have a legal duty to put the best interests of the shareholders first.

This is good news.

While I feel for console owners, it makes sense to improve what we have before trying to port it over. This approach is probably the right one to take.

Much as I'm enjoying bits of Odyssey, overall it's hard to say it was really ready for release. Even after Update 5 I can't claim I think it's there yet. And that's just in terms of content and features, without the crashes, disconnects and performance problems other people seem to be having.

I am looking forward to more details. Remember that proper, honest communication is important (the last few months should have made that very clear).

They have a legal duty to put the best interests of the shareholders first.
They probably do, unless it was made clear contractually when the said shareholders invested that terms were in place that put the other shareholders in place. I am ofc talking of the players who are also invested in the game. In fact the players are the generators of the ongoing shareholders income. Without them if they left in enough numbers the shares would become valueless and irrelevant. A shame really that the shareholders like 10 cent were ever given the opportunity to invest in this game. As I mentioned in my earlier post perhaps the way Chris Roberts of Star Citizen fame has financed his operation would have been a better choice. Although I am not sure if the legality aspect of shareholders first is a legal duty statement is correct, but then I am not a corporate lawyer unlike you seem to be. But thank you for educating me.

They have a legal duty to put the best interests of the shareholders first.
I believe that to be a myth - "The corporation is a separate legal entity. Because ownership of assets and liabilities are attributed to this entity, corporations are not “owned” by shareholders" ( source & source ). If you can cite a UK law that explicitly states to the contrary, I would be interested.

***Edit: See here for the update. Thank you Cmdr Para Handy

More words.
No real information.
Some confirmation of things everybody already guessed ( delayed console release, more PC updates to come )
Too little, too late.

I wasn't expecting confirmation of the obviously rushed release to meet financial calendars or the admission that the Cobra engine is seriously struggling to stay current or that the broken planet tech will need a re-roll to really fix it or that network code needs to be completely re-written to stand any chance of ever actually working properly.

So expectations met. No disappointment or surprise.
Elite Dangerous Odyssey will remain in it's current beta state for the foreseeable future.

Unfortunately there is a contradiction in Frontier's plans:

1. I agree that Odyssey will not be able to run on old consoles so it would be a good idea to stop supporting them for the expansion, however,
2. Frontier has stated several times they have no plans to natively support the new consoles.

In other words they can't do it on the old machines and don't want to do it on the new ones. The only outcome is that there will be no console version.

Personally sitting with a few billion in the bank and expensive ships in the stable just because i like them more I want Odyssey to succeed so I can finally buy it. Not really for the missions as I already have a table of dedicated FPS games, but I would like missions that just allowed discovery, planet exploration and the existing planetary minor mob interactions to take place. The FPS missions available are too much like many FPS shoot em ups kill mobs, try not to die, search for goodies ad nauseum.
Capturing exotic animals and finding alien flora for zoos as used to be the wishes of DB in his early thoughts about the game would be much better.

Hi Mike - not mentioned explicitly (Xbox / PS / etc.) but indirectly:

Source
Absolutely they were going to explore other platforms but it was not a confirmation. The Mac was 1 platform (which is arguably another sore point). It's kind of splitting hairs either way.
Bottom line console version is not out and FD have not charged console players for ED:O.

As of yet FD don't owe console players a working ED:O they do owe it to pc players.

Now whether or not FD back track on their plans to launch on PS4 xb1 is another issue. I hope they do Launch on them but ask any Mac player or oculus store front purchaser how that worked out for them......... (Sure Mac owners were offered a Windows key and oculus were offered a non oculus key but am not sure offering a Windows key to a PS4 player would help much)

Honest and frank - thankyou.

Looking forward to frame rate improvements and bug fixes.
