State of the Game

realism isn't something i would depend on for elite dangerous.

elite has plenty that is totally on par with the realism of nms.

what elite has that nms absolutely doesn't though is how you fly a space ship and the amount of things you do while flying your space ship.

if flying a space ship is your thing, then NMS is not going to scratch that itch.
that is absolutely true, and I mentioned it a couple of times - at least in space - flying the spacecraft as an aircraft above the landscape of planets though is very enjoyable, especially at a speed which is more like that of a sailplane. NMS is a game for planetary activities, space flight is not really what it is about.

that's not a way you deal with pests.. would you handle people who kidnap children the same way? just find other people's children and leave them around your yard to keep kidnappers away from your children ?
Absolutely.
And I would infect those bait kids with some rare, deadly virus my whole familiy would be vaccinated against.

Unbelievable stuff in NMS, for sure!

This is allegedly a spaceship capable of jumping 1,000's of LY....
it probably does it in a different way than the frame shift drive in ED - let's say if it can fold spacetime over larger distances, then 1000 lys is just a step away, where both folds meet. so it would not move a warp bubble through spacetime, but fold spacetime to make a short jump where those folds meet. The warp energy isn't used to propel the warp bubble but to fold spacetime accordingly to be able to make that tiny move to end up 1000 lys from where you started (measured in unfolded spacetime distance, but in the folded form it is just a short distance away) - that is how I imagine it.

NMS ftl is like a weirdish warp drive. where you compress space in front of you and travel across this compressed space where it is expanded back behind you - multiplying your speed beyond that of light but locally you never travel faster than normal speeds.

nms also has wormhole travel.

elite has hyperspace and warp. warp being much like nms ftl and functioning during supercruise. However, above a certain energy threshhold, this opens a tear in our dimension into hyperspace. jump drives tech ...along with the size of the ship and thus energy needed to open the hyperspace corridor dictate the time it takes to traverse hyperspace. Current jump drives are very good at what they do (because we stole the tech from thargoids), and so ships can jump nearly instantly...spending very little time in hyperspace. Thargoids however can theoretically, spend as much time as they want in hyperspace. Older tech would have hyperspace travel measured in hours or days depending on distance.

high jumps are not about folding space in elite, but closer to something like creating an artificial wormhole between two points in space. Space hasn't moved, you've just punched a hole thru it to create a custom - temporary shortcut thru hyperspace.

On these announcement type threads everything of relevance is said by page 2.
The only point for visiting afterwards is to watch predominantly middle aged men slap each other with verbal handbags.

Anyway, welcome to page 1279.

i'm not sure why official fdev news posts like that even have comments turned on. it's not like any of the responses are going to be worth having or listened to.

for some reason, your youtube posts never have the url ...so all you get is the blank area since videos aren't embedded anymore (properly) in the forum.

other people's though, you usually get the hyperlink at the bottom ...if you wanted to actually see what was posted (hopefully not a bad music video from some garbage artist)

edit: though the embedded preview does show up in the quoted reply.

Guess they got the Odyssey devs to do some forum work.

"Realism" is a gradient, and on that gradient Elite doesn't fare too bad imho. It's no RogueSys, CoaDE or Kerbal, and the compromises forced in by multiplayer make it fare a lot worse than FE2/FFE, as cartoony as they were graphically, but it's pretty far from NMS on that same scale. Whether it's worth it after that is a question of personal taste. Personally, I enjoy the whole spectrum, so I appreciate having games settling for different compromises.
