I agree that NMS had a similarly bad launch to Odyssey & people were (rightly) very angry and disappointed by that.
I agree that HG realised that goodwill is by far the most important tradable commodity in any business, and so therefore spent 5 years working on large content updates which were provided free for owners of the game.
I agree that HG are now lauded and held up as an example to the rest of the industry on how to behave in this situation.
I don't agree that developers should work for free. That's a tautology, and not what was implied or said - except by yourself.

HG still make money with every patch, and their developers still get paid. And they gain even more goodwill every time... so much so that they could have microtransactions or charge for updates and people would gladly pay. They've over delivered by a long way. I'd love to buy more copies to support them, but Steam or PS store won't let me.
