Odyssey Going Forwards

You agree with him that a company selling a product they developed is 'greedy money grabbing' because Sean didn't charge for his NMS patches?

No. Sigh..

I agree that NMS had a similarly bad launch to Odyssey & people were (rightly) very angry and disappointed by that.

I agree that HG realised that goodwill is by far the most important tradable commodity in any business, and so therefore spent 5 years working on large content updates which were provided free for owners of the game.

I agree that HG are now lauded and held up as an example to the rest of the industry on how to behave in this situation.

I don't agree that developers should work for free. That's a tautology, and not what was implied or said - except by yourself. 🤷‍♀️

HG still make money with every patch, and their developers still get paid. And they gain even more goodwill every time... so much so that they could have microtransactions or charge for updates and people would gladly pay. They've over delivered by a long way. I'd love to buy more copies to support them, but Steam or PS store won't let me.

This is certainly what's needed. Although I can't see anything else you could have announced as sending it to console the way it now works on PC would most likely be steering the Titanic into a second iceberg with C4 attached. However, I appreciate the company being honest with where we are and confirming the road ahead rather than letting us sit in speculation. I'll remain hopeful that the major issue get addressed in the coming weeks. Despite my criticisms I have no desire to see this expansion fail.

Back to elite..... 1 buggy release you can maybe let go.... But when it becomes almost meme worthy that is a sign something is wrong maybe not the devs, maybe it's higher up but at some point FD need to look and say "is this product at an acceptable quality to release to paying customers and if not perhaps we should so something about it as an apology .....
Agreed, and I appreciate your surrounding thoughts. What I really should have said was that for many players the $$ cost of EDO is really minor compared to the frustration over something a lot of us feel passionate about. To see something like this fall apart really sucks. Much much more than a box of stale cookies.

Not for a second am I suggesting people shouldn't seek refunds. Or turn a blind eye on unacceptable crap. Two months ago I was a staunch defender of the game and now I am disillusioned. I feel like I have wasted 100s of hours over several years playing a meaningless game that even the developer doesn't really care about. Its just a company making a product that gets sold to randoms on the internet. That's what upsets me. Not $35.

If they fix the game great. My passion is gone, and it was worth more than $35.

Well, I read the Original Post, not the 47 pages of comments and all I can say is that I'm again verry much disappointed.
First they release Odyssey in a lackluster state which never should've seen the light of day, console had to wait at least half a year for it's release and now even that is not enough so it seems.
Fdev made this mess, they released a broken product of which they knew it wouldn't be up to snuff, don't tell me they hadn't forseen this!
Now they encourage us to work with them in cleaning this mess up and be patient, it's like a car dealer delivering you a brand new car total loss and ask you to be patient and work with them.

The OP might sound oh so cool and clear but they know they screwed up releasing Odyssey in this state.
I've got no sympathy at all for how Fdev is conducting their business, I feel sorry for the devs and CMs but the higher-ups are at fault here.
There's nothing charming to be found in this entire release, in my opinion it was a cash grab to get their fiscal year in order nothing more.
I haven't got Odyssey yet because I'm on console but I'd never thank them for any fix on something that shouldn't have been this broken in the first place.
They should be ashamed!

I know some of you won't agree with me, that's okay, this is my opinion alone I don't speak on behalf on anyone else.

I'm still put off by my lack of PC finesse, but I have been considering an XBsX. I really dont want to restart my ED progress though 😒. I'm hoping Starfield will do justice to replace ED for me. I'll still have ps4 until it gives up on me
This is a serious piece of advice.

I really wouldn't expect Starfield to "replace" ED in any way.

The very fact that one is a singleplayer RPG and the other an online MMO already puts them up for different demographics.

We had people here saying Mass Effect Andromeda was going to kill ED. You know what they based that on? That's right, it's a sci-fi game.

With respect, setting alone doesn't mean Starfield will be in any way similar to ED.

If you're expecting a "replacement" you are almost certainly going to be wildly disappointed.

2070s. Most people running them seem to have 'acceptable but less than expected' performance rather than 'why the hell do I get 5FPS from a $1800 card?!' performance. :p
I have a 1060 and an i5 4690 and getting a solid 30 fps.

I honestly think there is such a thing as being spoiled by high performance. When it drops, it becomes impossible for some to accept, even if it still runs at an acceptable rate. (And yes, 30 fps is acceptable. I know you know this but some don't it seems)

I believe FDev customer support used to offer an account transfer service, so all may not be lost. Of course, if memory also serves, they charge for the privilege, even though it's just moving a few database records around...
If I could pay up to $20usd to move to PC. BIG IF but I would definitely move to PC if this is the case just for Horizon content in VR

30 frames per seconds were acceptable when pentiums were around. Or if your gamimg machine is a nintendo switch.

Why every gaming monitor around supports 120 hertz for what ?
to rip off your money. You do know that the human eye can't differ any frequency above 50Hz, don't you? Unless your an insect (They can, in fact, percieve a frequency above 100Hz).

What is meant by a "solid 30 fps".

Playing EDO on my PC averages around 30 fps but flutters all over, certainly not solid. Uuuup and Dooown. Are you capping yours at 30 making it a fixed number?

I agree 30fps is functional but defintely not something a modern game should be proudly boasting.

Indeed, capped. Doesn't change the fact the game is running smoothly on my system and I'm having fun.

Food for thought.

Your last sentence is subjective. To many people, that is not something that matters, just that it works, which it does.

YMMV

I love Elite Dangerous. Odyssey has it issues and you are right to focus on the PC version to get that right first. As a software developer myself I known issues can happen and all you can do is to try and put it right. I love playing odyssey but FPS just lets me down but hopefully that will be fixed in the not too distance future. Keep up the good work.

So … the console versions just stagnate in Horizons, I guess? More delays to fixing known issues on console versions and, presumably, any hope for graphical parity on PS should just be abandoned at this stage?
and what about the projected 2 year storyline? Will it be regulated just to Horizons so console cmdrs can be included in all aspects of the story? Or are we kicked in the teeth with that as well?

It will pass, the game will rebound, people will be happy, sad, bitter, angry, the world will keep spinning and eventually we'll all die and be forgotten about. (y)
Not this time. They really messed this one up. They won't have any income from Console this year - apart from lots and lots of upset customers.
And that unecessary or was it necessary? change to new Planet Tech is messing up the game performance.

There isn't much memorable in this world to remember. Even the UPA/UFP are going about their business pretending you don't exist.

Whilst I do believe the human eye thing has been disproven, that does not change the fact that the game running at 30 fps does not make it "literally unplayable".

That is just people refusing to tolerate something that has been drilled into their heads as "worse" and "bad".

Progress can be dangerous, as when something goes wrong, it can be very difficult to go back to how things were.
