Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

Well that Drew Wager "tricked" me into buying NMS (he's having SO much fun!) on PC. I'll be saving it for a long, rainy day, as X4 is my current evening obsession, but I have it now.

Are the galaxies different from one another? I know it's kinda lame, but my goal is to find a relatively earth-like planet (weird alien planets are "weird") and settle down and play the game more as a Minecraft replacement rather than an Elite replacement. I'd love to find a system with a ELW and an airless moon, along with maybe a weird planet or two just for fun. If I can find this in galaxy one, then I have no need for galaxy 2-256.
There are types of galaxies: Lush, harsh, empty and normal. You'll have no problem finding an earthlike in any galaxy but more common in lush or normal. The starter galaxy, Euclid, is normal. Each system has 2-6 planets/moons. The configuration you're looking for won't be hard to find. Planets aren't labeled, "earthlike". You'll like "Paradise". The things to look for is desired level of sentinel activity and atmospheric conditions. Paradise planets have low/nil sentinel activity and pleasant weather.

These other galaxies, these are end-game unlocks, correct? The empty galaxies, they have no other aliens? I'm assuming they have humans though (other players). I never liked that every single unexplored planet was full of aliens, except those rare barren ones that I'd never want to live on. The idea of going to an alien-free galaxy is kinda compelling. Heck, I'll settle for an alien-free solar system with some decent planets!

There are uncharted systems with no sentient aliens in the first galaxy.
You can filter stars by species on the galaxy map.

The galaxies are daisy chained via the last core jump in sequential order. This is not an end game activity, but the ability to arrive at the core in a few jumps comes with completing some of the quests, otherwise its hundreds of jumps.

At a high level, all the galaxies look the same with identical space stations, trading posts, miner settlements. Even the same set of 3 alien races, 4 if you count Travelers. Like shreddog stated, there are empty systems in every galaxy with abandoned structures.

Leaving this here as a wee example of NMS' "cartoony" graphics that I took yesterday.

I've built a small observation base where I'm stood.

Loving Drew's NMS streams! I watched the second one yesterday and they are a joy to watch. He's like a kid in a sweet shop! I'm finding it quite uplifting.

Me too. I started watching his second stream last night, and got the urge to fire the game up (it's very uplifting like you say) - so moved his stream to another monitor and played the game whilst he was streaming his.

It's fun watching an E: D player / evangelist get excited by all the little things that together make NMS a work of genius. By the end of it, he was openly wondering why he never started playing before.

It's great. :)

I die every time. Is there a way to start on a non lethal planet?

Every planet will kill you eventually if you don't take steps to stop it (hint: collect all the Sodium you can & use it to fill up your Hazard Protection), but you can restart as many times as you like & you'll get a different starting planet. You're unlikely to get a paradise or lush planet as a starting point.

Frost planets I think are the easiest to start with. Anything with volcanoes is a big no-no for starters. 😂

There's also a scripted storm at the beginning which will kill you quite quickly if you don't take shelter or keep shovelling Sodium.

PSA regarding game performance. Unless you have a CPU with at least 8 cores or 8 threads, you will suffer from planetary terrain generation stutter because the game tries to, irrespectively of what CPU is used, to run 8 threads at the same time.

There used to be a workaround by limiting the number of threads in the TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML, but this doesn't work anymore. This setting is ignored. It's a PS4 port artifact because the PS4 has in fact 8 cores and the game makes full use of these.

If you run Windows 10 or later, you can mitigate, but not fully remove, the terrain (re)load stutter by prioritizing Background Service scheduling.

....

I fired NMS up the other day to see how the new laptop deals with games. I noticed that (when I finally finished uploading) my last save was back in 2018. Started anew, lots has changed, still figuring out controls, still not finished the awakening stuff. (Do I really want to build a base here - nah, go to bed decide in the morning - lol )

I restart after every patch - and sometimes miss the odd one. Don't like playing without certain mods, so I usually have to wait until there's an update or a replacement. You're right, lots has changed. Right at the start of the game, someone randomly gave me a Void Egg at the Anomaly, which shortly became 'activated', so I'm now following that quest. Never had a 'living ship' before, so this should be interesting.

Congrats on having the willpower to go to bed & not build the base there and then... I would do the same, obviously. 😬😳

A lot has changed since I last played NMS on PS4, enough to make it feel new and fresh (now on PC). I was going to just play about an hour this morning, and then I looked up at the clock and it was afternoon!

NMS is not my favorite space ship games, but it may be one of my favorite planet-exploring games. Now if only Space Engineers had NMS planets and life!

Did you have the Drew Wagar experience Old Duck? Was there ... giggling? :D

I'll need to look into that. Overall I got it running smooth on my desktop (with VR no less) but am always looking for ways to improve it :)

I was surprised to find I could run NMS on my cheapass laptop, though... all settings at minimum, of course, but it runs surprisingly smooth (got an Acer Aspire 5 which I upgraded to 16GB of Ram)

Great screenshot!

Some like to use NMS' artistic approach as a cudgel against the game as if a more artistic representation of space is not valid. Realism has its place - I wouldn't want Elite to abandon its realistic graphical approach, for example - but an artistic interpretation of the final frontier is equally valid. I think it was brilliant on the part of Sean Murray to model the look of the game on the sci-fi book covers of the '70s and '80s. Since NMS is more of a sci-fi romp than it is a simulator, the artistic approach is entirely appropriate for its subject matter.

Some criticize NMS as not being a game as much as a screenshot generator, but I think that is actually a compliment if they would stop and think about it. :p

I've been having a blast playing NMS on my Chromebook via Geforce Now. Its slower gameplay is perfectly suited for cloud gaming where latency can be a concern. But honestly, I can never tell that I'm not running it locally. Remarkable service.

Wow, a lot of new stuff has been added to the game since I last played! I'm not talking about the obvious stuff like mechs and organic ships, but the more nuanced stuff like lighting in a storm, better recipes (which elements are used to build & refuel), new flora and fauna, etc.

Unfortunately there's still a sense of repetition that crops up surprisingly early. I sometimes think the game had more variety in the early days, and for some reason HG scaled back that variety. For now I'm using Panspermia as my headcanon to explain why I'm seeing the same plants on multiple planets.

And then there is the grotesque pop-in when flying over a planet's surface, which makes Odyssey's pop-in look quaint in comparison. Rumor is there's a mod that helps with this. I guess it's time to learn how to apply mods to NMS!

There is a mod for draw distance but it really screws the fps
