Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Games can take a long time to make.

Quick google, i'll add Star Citizen and EDO (up to their current state) in the ranks.

Shenmue: 6 Years
StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty: 7 Years
Galleon: 7 Years
L.A. Noire: 7 Years
Spore: 8 Years
Darkfall Online: 8 Years
Too Human: 9 Years
Team Fortress 2: 9 Years
The Last Guardian: 9 Years
Elite Dangerous Oddessy: 9 Years
Star Citizen: 9 Years
Final Fantasy XV: 10 Years
Prey: 11 Years
Diablo III: 11 Years
Mother 3: 12 Years
Duke Nukem Forever: 15 Years
Starfield: 25 years apparently...

A clear disadvantage given that the game aims for over a hundred of star systems. Especially when it comes to high quality assets in a pre-alpha.
Most of those will be procedurally generated.

But... gamer nicknames are anonymous and on the web. I mean, your in-game name is the same as your Spectrum name... so you're already doing that. I don't know, seems like you're trying to hide something.
I don't go to spectrum, only reddit and I use the same nickname than the SC one.
I know that as soon as I will show my nickname here, you will dig the whole web to get some info to use here to show me all your love. I prefer to not do it instead of regret it.

@Agony_Aunt This one must be triple bingo at least, no?

You just have to be an active and involved player for PTU Wave 2 and everyone can access the PTU Wave 3.
No need to pay.

No need, true. But you can pay to playtest quicker...

PTU Invite Waves

Once a build is stabilized and features are completed, we then roll that build out to a wider audience. The current PTU release format is as follows:

  • Evocati: Our smallest group of testers who help us get our releases ready for a proper public viewing more quickly! Picked from Issue Council posters with multiple submissions or contributions and from our most active PTU testers.
  • Subs and Concierge Wave: All RSI accounts that are active subscribers and all of our Concierge members will be invited to join the PTU testing after we open this wave. This is sometimes referred to as Wave 1.
  • Active Participation Wave: All members of the previous waves plus any players that have been very active and involved on the Issue Council, plus players with the highest amount of playtime across all game modes. This group is sometimes referred to as Wave 2.
  • Open PTU: The PTU servers and access will be opened to all backers with a game package.

This is not a game that took nine years to make.

You can do better than your average /r/sc dweller.

No they won't. Not where it matters the way it mattered to Stanton.
They are not going to hand craft every system, for most the assets will be reused in different variations of those assets.

The Stanton System and a few others, Pyro, Nyx, Odin... are hand crafted with original assets to build a complete assets portfolio that can be reused in different combinations and variations for less important systems, which is most of them.

I don't think you believe any more than i do that CIG would make original assets for each of the 100 + systems.

They are going to reuse corridors, plazas, rooms and etc. from one city in another city in a completely different star system? Even the alien ones? That sounds awfully repetitive, like in that other game that is nothing but 400B star systems copied and pasted.

What will those 100 Turbulent people do, then?

So far they have proven it over and over again, in the single star system. The fidelity and hand crafting is part of the business model.

About 20% i would say of Orison interiors are the same assets used in New Babbage, they have different textures but they are the same 3D model.

That is 20% of assets reuse for the same system. And textures do not make themselves, which leaves us with 90% of assets that are not reused. I think announcing that they need a hundred people only to produce locations is a clear indication of what direction they are going for.

I guess we will just have to dissagree, in this way it will take about 40 years to complete the work and the installed size of it would be about 2TB.

My first video on the web !

Found a nice free video editor VSDC to blur my name.
The quality is poor, I haven't found how to record in 2K, it's only 1080p and I've lost a lot of details...
Just FYI, 1080p is 2K. The 4 in 4K refers to the horizontal portion of the resolution (3840). It was a weird marketing move I think companies made to make it sound like it's 4 times the res of 1080p, rather than call it 2160p.

Cool vid though!

I think its also because its 4 times the pixel density. a screen is a volume, not a vertical and horizontal plane, so 1000 by 2000 lines goes 4 times in to 2000 by 4000 lines, not twice.

1080P = 2,073,600 Pixels
1440P = 3,686,400 Pixels (+78%)
4K = 8,294,400 Pixels (+400%)

Its literally 4 times 1080P.

They will reuse assets. It certainly won't be 90% of assets not reused in each system.
And for the bank of assets they have now, we only know what is shown for Stanton and some parts of Nyx. We don't know what they already have for Pyro and in SQ42.

"textures do not make themselves"
They have some cool techs in SC that allow them combining decals with tiled surfaces to make new textures easily. They are also pretty good with shaders and use them a lot.

Do we do this for anyone else here? Or you think you are somehow special?

the whole thing is really weird…
take a samsung cj890 ultrawide QHD monitor for example… horizontal would make it a 4k right? but
3840x1080=4,147,200 pixeles

Aspect ratio is also a consideration

Games can indeed take a long time to make and release. SC is not releasing after 9 years though. SQ42 isn't either. Those you list as being longer than SC are largely regarded as being stuck in development hell (not a good look for SC) and i can't believe you included Starfield based on that silly statement. Might as well then say SC has been in development for 30 years, ever since CR made Wing Commander he's wanted to do something like SC.

Also, you're conflating games being in development vs time to release (eg: Elite Dangerous - because Odyssey wasn't in development for 9 years). Which game are we playing here? If we are talking time to release, then ED was somewhere around 2-3 years. If we are talking about being in actual development, then if SC is still in alpha in 10 years, will you still be saying its ok, game dev takes a long time, EvE has been in development for 30 years!

Release is where the dev puts their product on the line and opens themselves up to review and criticism.

Are we playing the "playable now narrative"? Because if we are, it means we can critique Star Citizen without anyone saying ITS ALPHA!

Seems like a clear case of you wanting to have your cake and eat it.

Most of those will be procedurally generated.

The base planets, probably, but are you forgetting about Chris "Fidelity" Roberts? He won't be happy for ED level proc gen, let proc gen generate some settlements, and be done with it. Every system will have to have the CR stamp of approval, from NPC fashion, to custom cities, to custom missions, to custom NPCs... custom everything. And let's not forget unique lifeforms when they get round to those. Sandworms! He's not going to let other systems except the least important get less attention than Stanton. And keep in mind all the additional assets they need for alien systems and bases. And Sol system! I hope you're not forgetting about Sol, with its 1/10th sized Earth? Fidelity!

If CIG can make an important system in less than a year, as long as CR is in charge, i'll be amazed. Even less important systems i doubt they can do in less than 6 months. CR will be sticking his oar in at every opportunity.

So, cycling back to your list, assuming my estimates are somewhere in the ballpark, Star Citizen somewhat complete around 2070!

Answer the Call... its probably Death.
