General / Off-Topic Denis Villeneuve's Dune

One criticism i've heard of the trailers from people who have seen the pre-release version is that the amount if time Chani is on-screen in the film is about equal to the time you see her in trailer. Since the film only covers up to the point where Paul and Jessica meet the Fremen in the desert, Chani only really appears in Paul's dreams. The trailers make it look like she has a major part.

Still, it all looks very good.

Left Blade Runner 2042 thinking that it looked fantastic but was pretty hollow otherwise.

Maybe it's just me. Dune may well end up the same.

One thing about the new trailer - if part two gets made, they’ll be able to use this trailer as a ā€œPreviously on Duneā€¦ā€ before showing the next film šŸ˜…

This reminds me why I avoid trailers for films I don’t want spoilers for!

You never read the book?

You never read the book?
Several times, first back in the 80’s before the Lynch film came out, and most recently I’ve completed a re-read of the 6 Frank books and a first-time read of Brian’s ā€œHunters of Duneā€ (not sure I’ll read the final one, I didn’t like the writing that much).

The trailer just made me think ā€œit’s a prĆ©cis of the entire film!ā€ - if I was a newbie to Dune then it would’ve been the biggest spoiler going 😁

Oh yeah, i read the prequels/sequels by Brian. Totally ruined what Frank was going for i think. As standalone books, separate from Dune, i'd enjoy them as pulp sci-fi. They don't deserve to be associated with Frank's legacy though.

The trailer looks great, I'm very pleased with the overall concepts and style. Lynch nailed the look and I was afraid this film might be a bit 'bland'.

It was a bit jarring going straight from Chapterhouse into Hunters, like everything went from 3D into 2D if you know what I mean šŸ˜…

From now until I see the film in October I’ll be going, ā€œplease be Frank, don’t be Brianā€ 😁

Oh now that IS disappointing. So if the film doesn't make mega-bucks there might be no continuation...

Yup. Its all going to depend on how well it does.

I don't think its been confirmed yet whether they will include the fight with Jamis or not. As i understand, that part has been filmed according to sources. I feel they have to include that, as it doesn't make a good break point before it.

I think there has to be the part where Paul chooses his Fremen name and Jessica is pronounced a Sayyadina to make a good break point.

Hopefully they will make more of Paul getting Harah as his servant and her involvement in the story going forward. Something both the original film and the sci-fi channel didn't cover well. You do see the kids, Kaleff and Orlop in the original film, but they are not named at any point nor explained why they are they.

I think there’s the end fight scene with Sting where you can see Harah & her two boys in the background, and that’s about it (I haven’t watched the TV series, so can’t comment).

I think the Jamis duel would be a good end piece after the dramatic thopter escape, seeing the Maker up close, meeting the Fremen, then Paul’s first kill - during ā€œblind timeā€ when his prescience cannot see what’s going to happen; one possibility was him seeing his own dying body on the cave floor .

Yeah, I seem to be in the minority who found Blade Runner 2049 a bit dull. It shares many of the qualities of the original film, but one thing it doesn't really have is charismatic performances.

That shouldn't be a problem with the new Dune, although they probably won't be quite as eccentrically odd as the performances in the Lynch film.

Have to confess that my main problem with Lynch's Dune is the Frank Herbert bits.

Lynch's Dune was an abomination based on an earlier attempt by director Alesandro Jodorowsky to make the movie.

Jodorowsky's Dune is a 2013 American-French documentary film directed by Frank Pavich. The film explores cult film director Alejandro Jodorowsky's unsuccessful attempt to adapt and film Frank Herbert's 1965 science fiction novel Dune in the mid-1970s.

Villeneuve's version, at least from the trailers, looks like it's (finally) going to be the real deal and get it right for the book(s).

Also in Lynch's version; Sting was the final kiss of death. He can't act, never could, he's rubbish..... one of the most cringe-worthy screen appearances of all time, by anyone. Absolutely ghastly "acting"..........

Give me a Lynch abomination over the one-note tedium of the actual books any day.

Lynch's Dune is one of my favourite films of all time. I've watched it countless times. Such great acting talent that it overrides the issues with the story. Yeah, Sting was an odd choice, but somehow that works for me as well. And the music was spot on.
