General / Off-Topic Denis Villeneuve's Dune

I have to re-read them books. Or at least the first one before the movie.

Indeed that happenend
But that's quite normal in the Patriarchy that was the Empire.

Which makes even more implausible the existence of lady Liet, Imperial Planetologist
I’ve just had a quick scan through Appendix 1 and it ends with:

“By this time his son, Liet-Kynes, was nineteen, a full Fremen and sandrider who had killed a hundred Harkonnens. The Imperial appointment for which the elder Kynes already had applied in the name of his son was delivered as a matter of course. The rigid class structure of the faufreluches had its well-ordered purpose here. The son had been trained to follow the father.”

Replacing “son” with “daughter” doesn’t cause me any issues as I can’t remember any specifics about the class structure mentioned, and if you think it’s implausible in the 11th millennium, well, I hope you can enjoy the rest of the new film.

Replacing “son” with “daughter”

Doing that would mean to replace the Patriarchy structure of the Empire with matriarchal one.
And the Bene Gesserit would be all males.

yea...

Nevertheless, I would still go and see it on the big screen

I think that’s just a bit of a leap 😂

I reckon those male BG’s would have a rare old time with the breeding program - choosing the exact right little swimmer in the heat of the moment and secretly knocking up aristocratic ladies 😁

BG could indeed control the sex of their progeny at conception.
And then here comes Lady Jessica whom broke the BG directive and had a boy with Lord Leto.
Surely her performance could be easier replicated by a male BG :D

I'm sure there was a whole thing to do with Chani being kept in the sietche only because she was born to one of their women.

Could be wrong but I'm 2,000+ miles from my book collection at the moment so can't confirm.

Saw the trailer and while it looked a decent action movie it was also clear that it wasn't going to be the beloved classic from our youth. This is also backed up by various interviews where Dennis professes to love the source material and promises to remain faithful, then goes on to make critical changes.

Dune wasn't an action story but rather it was brilliant for the hidden tensions behind the scenes that almost erupted. Lady Jessica was already the most interesting, and arguably important character in the story; she doesn't need jazzing up. I'm sure I'll watch it, but it won't be "Dune."

Even the triple-feature-length miniseries had to cut stuff out. You could literally game of thrones it and make a full series across multiple seasons in the Dune universe and still have source material to work with, Herbert did a lot of worldbuilding. You could easily get a full season out of the first book alone.

As long as they do not involve Weiss and Benioff.

Then actually have Pink Floyd and not that horrific dirge of a remix. I was very close to muting the video its so bad- hopefully they ditch this (or shove it wayyyy back in the credits) and instead we get Hans Zimmer to deliver proper backing tracks.

I made no comment on the version in the trailer. Jenner said he wasn't a fan of pink floyd. And i thought i knew him! Damn my little pony lover! Should have known there was something wrong with him!

It was a jarring shock coming from the BR 2049 trailers which leaked menace to have Dune screech that out. But then the same was true for one of my favorite films, Dredd, which had a totally out of place track (instead of the films actual soundtrack which was amazing).

I hope not, Arrival was a let down for me compared to the short story.

For me the only letdown was the fact they went a bit easier on dr Louise Banks regarding the fate of her daughter, but i can understand that.
Otherwise, it was brilliant (might be due to the fact that i first seen the movie then i read the short story)

I'll go out on a limb and say that I think Denis makes visual films that have soggy stories - BR 2049 was the same, with epic visuals but stories that plod (its why I think it did poorly).

For me in Arrival the fleshed out extras felt, well, extras- it got the visuals and feel right and then diverged too far for my taste. I liked the short story because it was truly enigmatic and you never really knew why the heptapods come to earth at all.

Maybe I'm wishing for Netflix or someone to adapt the whole anthology :D Stories of Your Life and Others had some really great material in it.
