Update 6 Terrain Comparison Thread

Don't know how to break it to you but...that's not ED, that's Io. Like, the actual Io. Not that is any much different in Elite, since they replicated its appearance for obvious reasons. I can bet that a real moon may look rather realistic! 😆

Haha my bad but ED nailed it better than NMS though ;)

I might be daft but isn't the best of Horizons supposed to be included in Odyssey already?
Just saying.....
No. Those are two absolutely different planetary generation techs. Odyssey never could mimic "Horizons", and even less possible for Horizons to mimic Odyssey. And that's why I'm even a bit shocked with commanders who do visit different "good" places from Horizons in Odyssey. That's counterproductive by definition.

I'm not getting involved too deep into this discussion because I can't even check it for myself since I'm on console but imho the "good" places from Horizons are supposed to be of the same quality at the least within Odyssey no?
In my opinion an update like Odyssey is to improve the game not make it worse.

Ugh I don't even understand why the even released this mess, they knew it wasn't ready.

Because it's completely different and regenerated from scratch then you're really comparing a random location in Horizons with a random location in Odyssey. Even if no-one had any overall complaints about Odyssey the same locations wouldn't be the same in both, so some will inevitably be more interesting in one than the other.

Why ? People expect an increase in quality, almost every time. We were sold a MASSIVE increase in quality, up to alpha after all.
Looking different, yes sure, as expected. Looking better ? Well, it should be, but doesn't a lot of times.

"People are comparing the best of Horizons with the worst of Odyssey".
I thought it would be an upgrade from a 2015 game to a 2021. Maybe I'm wrong...
There is no problem to upgrade something and have many things downgraded.
Yeah... Right...

It's just the nature of procedural generation.

Edit. And agreed what Hunvagy said above.

So I'm finally checking out update six after a break when update 5 came out. I went out from bubble and this is the first undiscovered atmospheric planet I have found.

When the planet stretches out in front of me (Tried this with a couple in bubble also before I left) everything from the middle of the screen up that has planet terrain on it shimmers, everything with defining lines shimmers almost like night vision is on. Looks TERRIBLE and makes me wonder what the heck is going on. Never did this before for me.

Ill be spending my free time today exploring from here and checking out planets. I had problems with Odyssey not loading in terrain detail since release and I am hoping patch 6 fixes the problems I have been having. Performance on planets is much better than it use to be, it use to dip into 40s and 50s, but other than when I go from cruise > glide > planet and get drops to like 10 fps for a second or two its been solid. I feel it looks much worse and this shimmering is driving me nuts.

Oh no... Look at this... Reposting here on behalf of @quackinthebush

Thats terrible^2 lol. They're following suit, in the whole "oh, did you think update 5 was worse? Watch this..." and ultimately punishing us for asking for things to be better. And I may add, it's becoming consistantly worse in some regards. Sadly, starting to realize/hope this degredation of things may be intentional and that FDev are having a laugh. For a laugh, I'd love to hear which of those images anyone at FDev things is preferrable.

The images of the planets Art showed on his post had no tiling, and looked incredible. Thats what we'll eventually get, when they're done messing around.

They actually did have pretty evident tiling, check again. They did look good otherwise though, and I'm finding that the actual planets in-game post Update 6 look just as good.

I'll check again. Even tiling before, I didnt really notice until it was highlighted in a thread, and then went to see for myself. It doesn't seem like a deal breaker for me, but the rounding of mountains etc, is not good to see.

I find going to a planet seems to have much less LOD issues, than before, for sure.
