The FFED3D Thread

It's kinda difficult not to drool :)
*Drools profusely*

Too bad that I think it'd be easier to learn Russian (with it being a Slavic language and all - I'm a Pole), than trying to decipher the babble coming out of online translators.

I for one am eagerly awaiting somebody who will take all the relevant files and put them somewhere bundled together, so I don't have to wade through the Russian board and decipher what people are saying there.
The things they have being doing seems awesome, but honestly, I'm a little to busy ( and lazy maybe) to decode what to do where and how in a foreign language. Am I the only one here who wishes someone would place all the goodies on an English site and simplify things a bit more?
Would this be okay with the Russians even?
Do we even have any communication with them?

Steve...how about it? ;)

I'm guessing the best way is to register on the forum and ask them, but at the moment there seem to be quite a few people beavering away at the ships, buildings etc. I'm sure they'll all be collated by the Russian guys eventually

Hi newbie here,

Great to see a Direct3D version of ffe around at last. I do a search for elite frontier every six months or so and was more than pleasantly surprised this time. The screenshots I've seen look great.

I've downloaded the game and updates today and got them running on my machine but only just. The frame rate's so horrendously slow that I have to ctrl+alt+del out of the game each time I try running it.

I'm guessing this is a compatability problem with my hardware but does anyone know of a quick fix? I haven't got the quickest of machines but I find it hard to believe this game can be that demanding on a system.

My machine is a 2400+ Sempron with 1Gb RAM and a Geforce FX5500 running XP.

Hi scopell, and welcome to the forum.
I'd check you have all the latest versions of your for your system Inc your graphics card and the latest so version of directx. And try not to have too many programs running in the background.

It's surprising how demanding the game can be, even on modern systems, but ATI cards seem to cope with D3D better than Nvidia. Mind you, the reverse is true for OpenGL.

Not that I'm suggesting you go out and buy a new graphics card, you understand. You'd have to be some sort of nut - who probably runs his own Frontier website - to do something like that

There is always bare JJFFE, if your box can't handle D3D version. Not bad, especially taking into account that D3D version, while impressive, is still very unfinished.

I think something should be done with the atmospheres. Star-field shouldn't be visible from bodies with thick atmospheres during the day. It's good to see ice-worlds having their atmospheres back, but the same should apply to methane worlds and gas giants. Also rendering of asteroidal bodies is thoroughly broken and brown dwarf sub-stellar objects look plain horrid. Giving custom, photo-based skins to Sol system objects would also rock.

Can't to know. Dreamzzz's xperiments, I believe. But it's will included not in last release, probably. Just experiment, I think

If things like that water effect do make it in...... :D

Makes my mouth water thinking about it.

I'm hoping the next release optimises the code as well, to achieve a better frame rate. After all, it's no good having realistic water effects at 2-3 fps.
