Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

For me it's all about the elephant in the room, sunk cost fallacy and fallacies.

On a conscious and subconscious level, and whether people like to admit it or not it is a perfectly natural human nature response to any kind of emotional and/or financial investment. We are all guilty of it at one time or another, it's quite natural to know within oneself when something is crap and taking the urine and equally as natural to be offended should - heaven forbid - someone else have the audacity to point that fact out to you. Of course it's not always the case, sometimes you can agree and laugh it off, or agree and be angry or upset about whatever said investment is or was but for whatever reason we just get protective of purchases and investments as soon as we've clicked 'Confirm and Pay' or whatever.

I'm not saying this applies to everyone who backs or has backed Star Citizen, in fact far from it but with increased 'cost' comes increased emotional investment and increased defensiveness. So yeah, with all Star Citizen's bling barges, the pressure to 'keep up with the Jones', (another real thing whether you like it or not), and frankly silly costs for ships etc, (imo), the backers of SC are more invested in general terms than other gamers with the vast majority of other games because their wallets are considerably lighter.

None of this is a problem, perfectly natural human response as I said but the inability to admit it from some is what makes some SC backers 'cult-like' for sure. If any of them are reading this I hate to break it to you but a decade long alpha is taking the urine - there are zero if's or but's about that. The litany of broken promises, outright lies and pathetic smoke and mirrors campaigns need to be held to account and the only ones that can do that is you, the backers. One of the reasons SC is at best stagnant is because Spectrum is far too dominated by the 'done when its done' and 'Roberts is the next coming of Trump' crowd, there is no accountability, it's like frakking North Korea.

SC backers - of which I was once one - pull your finger out of your proverbial backsides and start holding CIG, Roberts and the rest of the clown show to bloody account to a much stronger level than you are now. Because if you don't in another 5-10 years we're still gonna be waiting for that next god patch or it's all gonna be vapourware, either way you are gonna be looking more and more like the clowns yourselves and the cost really will have sunk.

Is there any way in your view that someone can just enjoy the game for what it is?

PS: i recognise that silly little robot in your avatar, something from my childhood, i forgot what it was, can you tell me?

Nah the whole last few years feel different to me. Like the relative numbers of absolutely crazy zealots have dropped. And the number of regulars in perpetual grumble mode hold more daily sway (without being shouted down perpetually for their pernicious FUDding)

You can kinda see it in the memes that have bedded in without contest. Chris as meddling boob, feature cuts and rolling delays as the norm, old age as the destination. They’ve always been around, but they’re just part of the furniture now…

Oh yeah that bit ain’t changed ;). Kinda what I was saying before. The grumbling doesn’t alter CIG’s trajectory. But a change in the above would ;)

(If I had to guess, I’d say they attract enough new whales annually to easily cover the veterans who’ve closed their wallets. And the sentiments of that active whale minority could be distinct from the broader war of words that we see.)

If the freeform griping were to snowball over the years, then maybe that’d impact new guys over time. But it’s not really at that stage.

It’s just not as smothered by ardent BDSSE as it used to be ;)
I'd agree there, we're not always the happy campers we're sometimes made out to be. As backers...we can no longer do a 2016 and have another refund exodus to mark our disapproval...but we can at least whine at will on Spectrum and still get the upvotes for it. As existing or longer term backers, most of us are way past done spending and Ci¬G know this, hence the free-fly bonanzas pushed through by marketing and trying to attract new cash every 5 minutes.

Ci¬G also know something has to give, there was a lot of disquiet and rapidly deleted narky comments when the idiot posted his "It'll be done when it's done" nonsense on Spectrum. The sheer arrogance and hubris behind that attitude, considering he's been playing around at this for 10 years on other folks money and not his own didn't sit too well...since then, there seems to have been a minor revolt and the realisation that Roberts went a bit too far on the backer's patiently held leash which may have pushed the board at Ci¬G to get something out of the door by way of meaningful PU content or Sqn 54 sooner rather than later or it'll all come to a crashing halt just as quickly as the steady but also rapidly failing tolerance from most of the backers.

I still suspect that the Calders and other shadow investors we know little or nothing about are forcing changes within Ci¬G...only time will tell. If things start moving now that the idiot Roberts has been removed from involvement in the PU in a general sense, it'll sure be a pointer to it...there's just no way his relocation was on a strictly voluntary basis... changing to a completely different education system alone is a big step for his young kids born and raised in the US to justify such a move. If he had been heading to sunny Manchester on his own, I could perhaps wear the voluntary bit with barely a raised eyebrow.

I noted a rather blunt and pointed mention by Rich Tyrer during the last ISC video where he commented on the changes being brought to the development style within Ci¬G now being less bogged down by internal red tape, I took that as a hint of some long awaited freedom from CR's incessant micromanaging the project leading to the PU being starved of dev resources in favour of his own pet project. I also noted he made not one mention of Turbulent's recently increased involvement with the PU but rather markedly stuck to talking around only what Ci¬G was... or wasn't... doing...but that's just me reading between the lines again.

Whatever has happened at Ci¬G, it's been pretty big. With Turbulent seemingly being given the job of taking up the slack and concentrating on strictly PU content plus Ci¬G now apparently throwing all hands to the pumps to bail out Roberts' perennially stagnant magnum opus of Sqn 54, I get the feeling that things may be changing a bit more yet...I fully expect Turbulent to produce their own roadmap for the planned PU content at some point too...we'll have to wait and see, since It's still not clear how far their remit with regard to PU content goes :)

Anyway, still love the damage modelling on the ships...a pair of us were off hunting bounties tonight all crewed up with me in the turret of the Hurricane... we did a couple of fps bounties in caves as well as the space shooty-ship stuff, makes for a bit of variety if nothing else.

Guy was fired by CIG.

He rambles on for a few mins before mentioning that.
I'm really sure someone will miss him hiding under a bridge somewhere

Ci¬G couldn't have fired him anyway, he's just another attention seeking dreamer, not an employee... merely some petty little troll who streams himself pad killing n00bs at Olisar hoping to make a living out of it on Twitch 🤷‍♂️

Well, no idea who he is, but how can you be sure that he wasn't an employee?

Having some fun searching for the word "predict" in relation to SC.

LOL! Ooops.

Some guy crowing how he was right about funding hitting 40 million.... roughly 10% of where we are now.

Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/starcitizen/comments/1zbqxh/i_predicted_we_could_get_to_40_million_by_2015/

And in the comments

That won't happen until we are close to public launch in the second half of 2015. We shouldn't be surprised if the game had 4 million players in 2016. That would be very common, even conservative progression from the current state.

He was way off.

Predictions not so funny any more

Back in 2015 i made such a prediction that the PU 1.0 ill be between 2020 Q2 and 2021 Q1... I stopped making release date predictions since..

That stopped being fun about five years ago.

And from a previous thread here from our very own @McGlashan from 2 years ago

Some of my predictions:

  • Squadron 42 beta will be pushed well back into 2021 or beyond, maybe they'll squeeze out some single mission "prelude" demo in the meantime with massively reduced functionality so that they can pretend they've delivered while continuing to hide behind their usual "it's just the alpha, the real thing will be better" defense.
  • CIG somehow shrugs off the court case, probably through some private settlement that will be hailed by both sides as a win.
  • There will be a new planet, with some gimmicky feature like rain or flocks of birds. Maybe it will be parked on the other side of one of those Wipeout-style interactive tunnel cutscenes to give the impression of multiple systems. Which will cause all sorts of exciting new network problems.
  • There will be 3 or 4 new technical buzzwords created to give the ongoing impression that the jesus patch technology is still just around the corner.

What FUD! Let's take a look.

1) Oh, he got that right.
2) Exactly what happened
3) Orison, falling leaves. Spot on. No tunnel though. FUD confirmed!
4) So so true.

I'm only about 7 minutes in to it but already i'm finding it really ironic that this seemingly self confessed PVP junky is finding it hard to get his fix while Katie and her crew got off her behind and set it up...... you know, as you would, in a totally open world do as you please ####ing sandbox!!!!! and its pretty damned good.

Sure, everyone has their own views on things, and i laughed a lot at his salt levels. But was mainly curious due to his claim of being sacked by CIG. Of course, no way of verifying that either way unless someone knows who he is and has access to CIG's employment records :p

As for Katie, its probably time she drops the "Elite CMDR" part. She hasn't recorded an ED video in 2 months and now just feels like she is milking it. She's now an established SC player and its no longer a case of an elite player playing SC. Its a SC player playing SC, who may (or may not) also play other games as well.

Oh don't worry i'm salt mining it.... :D

At this point if CIG came out with a pile of stinking poopoo and plopped it into SC backers would say "This is great! Obviously it's needed for SQ42 that's why there's a pile of stinking poopoo right in the middle here".

And you wonder why it's a cult.
In some odd way, isnt that a fantastic achievment though? Sling crap and they donate more and ask for more?

I think I saw one of their youtubes, since it was around the alpha release of Odyssey. They sorta seemed like SCers to me, not that thats a thing, but I what I mean is, they didn't seem like they/she were entirely promoting ED:Odyssey. It is not a shock to hear they're SC influencers, not that thats a bad thing.
That's some pretty intense SC gameplay for being their 27th time in there. In the last 5 years, I've probably had 8 sessions in SC. In the early years, a session would last about 20 mins. Recently they'd last 7 minutes or so. What Im watching in this youtube is entirely unreal to me. Looks great, but I dont think I'll ever have that experience. Guess I'll have to see the 'verse through their eyes.

Yes! SC is already the BDSSE! You should buy an Idris or two. And remember, any performance issues or bugs, or you just not enjoying it, its all your fault. You probably didn't install it on a SSD anyway.

If not the BDSSE, how about the BDMVE! Best Damned Money Vacuum Ever! It's like magic!
