General / Off-Topic Denis Villeneuve's Dune

I mostly love Lynch’s Dune…about two-thirds of it or so - but there’s quite a bit that’s either limited by the special effects of the time or from trying to fit too much in or from trying to adapt the source material. With modern day special effects and how unarmed combat can be portrayed on the screen these days (and the Lady Jessica actress has got previous there, so the Weirding Way won’t be sound based this time 😁), and (fingers crossed) Part 2, I’m hopeful for the new adaptation.

I’ve watched various cuts of the Lynch film over the years, but I think the original has a lot going for it. It was especially interesting to rewatch after viewing Jodorowsky’s Dune - I never really noticed the Giger designs before, which seem so obvious now.

As for calling the books one-note tedium - u wot m8? 😁 Are you sure you didn’t pick up Brian by accident?

Yeah, I seem to be in the minority who found Blade Runner 2049 a bit dull. It shares many of the qualities of the original film, but one thing it doesn't really have is charismatic performances.

That shouldn't be a problem with the new Dune, although they probably won't be quite as eccentrically odd as the performances in the Lynch film.

Have to confess that my main problem with Lynch's Dune is the Frank Herbert bits.
You are not alone in that- I found 2049 far too long and felt very much a middle film to another.

The problem with any Blade Runner sequel or any similar film is that Blade Runner set the style for anything that came after, and nothing would live up to it.

I just think it's maybe the age we read things at. if I'd read DUNE as a kid it might have made more of an impression. I only read it for the first time a couple of years ago and it was a real slog to get through. But to be honest, with SF I mainly enjoy short stories. It's quite rare I enjoy a SF novel. Whereas I love lots of science fiction films.

It’s all personal preference stuff but I’ve enjoyed every read-through of Dune over the years and I can’t put that down to just nostalgia. I definitely wouldn’t characterise it as “one note tedium” 😁 Plans-within-plans, all the political machinations, the unique Universe that he created - that’s the stuff that I like.

I can imagine if you prefer sci-fi as short stories then going into THE original sci-fi epic would be a bit of a slog 😅

Last year I also read Asimov’s Foundation trilogy (often touted as the other great original sci-fi epic) and I was fairly disappointed with it - I found it to be 1950’s archetypes in a sorta futuristic setting. Hopefully the new TV adaptation will improve my opinion.

I really noticed that a couple of years ago. As a youngster one of my favourite things was the idea of "Lensmen" from E E "Doc" Smith's books, I devoured them and they held a place of reverence in my memory. Then I grabbed them some years ago for my e-book reader - OMG it was so dreadful, I mean really, really hard to bear.

Lensman and Skylark were amazing as a kid. I don't even have to reread them to look back and cringe at how bad they were. Pulp sci-fi at its best/worst.

Lynch's Dune is one of my favourite films of all time. I've watched it countless times. Such great acting talent that it overrides the issues with the story. Yeah, Sting was an odd choice, but somehow that works for me as well. And the music was spot on.
I must. for once, disagree with you..... and Sting will always suck.

The Police had some good tunes. His solo career I've basically ignored.

Sting's acting: Not only is my deteremiantion based on Dune but I saw him in some other film or TV show. He should stick to his day job......

Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner wrote a few tunes in his time:

This is quite a nice thing, Gregory Porter singing at the Polar Music Prize 2017 :

(though he seems to be reading the lyrics as he sings, but maybe not)

He's actually been in a lot of things.

Hell, he was in Quadrophenia.

He's apparently also in an upcoming French film.

Don't get me wrong I never said the guy hasn't got musicianship or can't write or perform, not a fan of his music much.

Good actors in Lynch's Dune: Patrick Stewart and some others.

One of the absolute greats can be seen here acting with Stewart:

…just look at that smouldering look!

I hope he makes a come-back in the new film 😁

Doesn't open here until next month but I doubt there will be spoilers as I've read the series of books (up to Chapter House Dune) any number of times....
