Broken Atmospheric Lighting

Lighting of atmospheric planet surfaces is not accurate, especially during sunsets/sunrises. Sunsets on ammonia worlds produce a deep red hue of the atmosphere, however this is not translated into how the surface should look, due to the specific lighting of the atmosphere. Not sure if the issue is across all atmosphere types, however the issue is most apparent with Ammonia worlds. The gameplay trailer showed how the light should behave, however this isn't what is seen in the live game. This is visually shown in Figure 1 and 2.

Notice how the surface in Figure 1 is bathed in this red light from the atmosphere, however in Figure 2 (Live Game), this is non existent.

The lighting on most atmospheric worlds also behaves similarly to lighting on non-atmospheric worlds, with hard shadows being common. This isn't realistic as the ambient lighting from the sky should smooth out and also expose hard shadows. Worlds with blue atmospheres like Water worlds appear to do this better than other types of atmospheres, especially Ammonia ones. There is a clear disconnect between the atmosphere and the surface for worlds like the ammonia ones. This is visually shown in Figure 3,4 and 5.

Figure 5 shows what I think is the shadows working "correctly" (there are still other issues with shadows). You can still notice details in shadow, and it isn't just this dark void as shown in Figure 3. Figure 3 appears similar to Figure 4, leading me to believe that Ammonia worlds (and any other atmos types with this issue) are just treating the surface like a non atmospheric world, and just slapping an atmosphere over the top, without it really interacting with the surface at all.

Thanks OP! Yep - coloured atmospheric lighting is not working.

@sallymorganmoore responded to this issue over at https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/does-coloured-lighting-work.588361/post-9473024, and there have been a couple of tickets raised already, but your ticket highlights the issue very clearly, so I've added my comments to it.
apologies for making a duplicate of the issue. I couldn't find anything about the topic on the issue tracker earlier. feel free to mark it as a duplicate if there is an existing ticket outlining this issue.

I've been pointing this out since day one. I had a ticket that I created in that post that @sallymorganmoore responded to, but it expired. For me is a show stopper and I'm very frustrated because unlike the cockpit lighting issues, this one has never been aknowledged by the team and comparing the images of the trailers and the final release version it's pretty obvious.

I guess they cut proper lighting of for performances, and we won't see it again until they manage to seriously improve them (if ever)
I'd be surprised if that was the case.

I'm not a graphics programmer, but it's my understanding that applying a full screen coloured shader is one of the least graphics intensive tasks a 3d engine can do. They've done it before around stars and inside Lagrange clouds, and it's been shown to work in their promotional footage.

it's more likely it's just bugged/broken.

Awesome! I'm seeing a lot more confirmations keep them coming, let's make this happen! If they could fix this issue exploration of planets would be as rich as I imagined it would be seeing the trailers!

I was thinking about that too... In cases like this it's hard to be specific with reproduction info, since it's an overall issue that can be seen in all the planets that don't have a star with neutral colour. Devs know the game better than we do and I'm sure they are well aware of what changed so in trailers planets looked different, I guess it's more a matter of us telling, hey! we are not happy with this issue that it's right in front of our eyes all the time. So probably just submitting screenshots with this problem should be enough.

However I've noticed something about the lighting engine that might be a bit of reproduction info... The farther you are from the star, the more neutral light becomes on planets and ships, while the star itself is still looking saturated with it's original colour. Planets closer to stars have more chances of getting tinted by the colour of the star. But in the case of terrain fog, it's never affected by the sun colour, no matter the distance.
