Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

What did I even watch? Is that the new Paranormal Activity movie? The one set in space? 😂
Trolleys haven't worked since forever...medpens now only work perhaps 4 out of 10 times since the 3.14 patch launched...both are well documented and known bugs...that's why nobody even tries using trolleys (or medpens) except when making deliberate SC blooper vids :)

Just think of all the likes/upvotes/clicks you can get producing them though!

Free internet points!

That's what they're there for, everybody who plays regularly knows they're broken, especially trying to drag a trolley up a ship ramp which has never worked...ever. The medpen thing is just an annoyance, it'll be fixed next patch...and get broken again the patch after that :D

The Star Citizen tinfoil-hattery in this thread is truly a thing to behold when it comes to new folk posting anything that spoils the persistently negative narrative in here. I'll have some 🍿 while you get on with it :D

In other news, having been carefully noting interesting stuff coming from @WotGTheAgent over the years and watching the development of the project as an interested bystander...to my mind there's been major changes at Ci¬G as a whole in recent months, something has changed...that's fer sure. I'd liken it to a minor revolution... if I were in a hopeful frame of mind... since it seems the era of the idiot Roberts being given a free hand to continue damaging the project as a whole might be coming to an end.

Reading between the lines when listening to comments made during the latest ISC videos and the like, all the devs seem to be making reference to CR and his 'vision' almost in the past tense. It's like having him punted off to manage his magnum opus from Manchester has changed the balance of power at Ci¬G, as well as Turbulent seemingly being given a mandate for things related to future PU content...and server meshing apparently (or whatever Turbulent are calling it now).

I'll be interested to see what occurs during Citcon this year...not so much with the predictable marketing drive and content, but by what's being said and by whom. I'm still patiently waiting for Turbulent to release their own roadmap if they ever do such a thing...instead of just pitching in with the general nonsense of the Ci¬G related version...as well as ditching Disco Lando for someone perhaps less irritating once they start taking on more responsibility for the PU content.
I absolutely agree about the complete change in tone over the last 12 months. Leaks have been painting a pretty grim picture of the development process -- especially upper management's continued missteps -- in regards to direction and leadership for a lot longer than that. I think last year's October leak hit pretty close to home: Turbulent taking over PU development, Chris detaching himself from SC, etc. I'd say that one was spot on and we are finally seeing that leak become reality twelve months later.

I do want to touch on something else real quick, since CitCon is around the corner: the plethora of CIG "insiders" that post to YouTube or their Twitch channels, often with extremely beneficial information right before ship sales or big conventions. These guys have been more wrong than right (dare I say, even more wrong than I) but continue to get support and clicks and ad revenue.

My parents taught me to always be skeptical about people who promise you a lot for a little bit of money, no matter if it's a faith healer claiming to cure cancer or a video game claiming it will do what's never been done before. I often find these grassroots advertisers (or influencers or whatever you want to call them) pretty disgusting, because all they simply are is another arm of the PR advertising machine desperately trying to feel more personal and less corporate. They exploit that personal connection so they can foster more sales for their partner and more money to themselves. BoredGamer and other "space game fans" who talk with the devs on their discords, get special previews, tours, treatments and even ships added to their accounts (to sell on the gray market if they want, which 100% has happened -- this also circumvents the paid ad laws) make me rather sick.

I've never made a cent off Star Citizen and never plan to; I mean, besides the thousands and thousands of dollars from those Derek Smart checks. Anyone is free to believe whatever and whoever they want, but please, always try to remain suspicious of the people asking for money without a solid product to sell you.

Didn't Derek also give you free copies of his games too? They'll be worth like many cents now!

Looking over stuff like this, where many of the big beats have publicly panned out...

Another hello post from @WotGTheAgent on SomethingAwful
  • recent "big ask" for another round of investments
  • this will include another round of monies for advertising
  • this ask also includes a large amount directly to Turbulent
  • Turbulent currently handles some networking, level design, gameplay design and more for SC
  • "We are not working on anything related to Squadron 42. That is all being handled by Wilmslow."
  • more and more of SC proper to be turned over to Turbulent
  • it has been a "rough transition" and still in process
  • starting this quarter, expect "a more detailed, polished and presentable roadmap" from Turbulent
  • unknown if this transition will be announced
  • "We don't know how are fans are going to react, but Chris is still heavily involved in the project."
  • Turbulent "only adding help" not "taking away development" from CI
  • "We are the same company, the same people, the same ones that have been working [on SC] this whole time."
  • some Turbulent employees feel sad about only being referred to as "the website guys"
  • "Loads of us play the game, love the game, fixed bugs, [and] have helped make gameplay decisions."
  • the stalled progress this year has made some management nervous about new deadlines
  • internally, SC is considered a live game and released [again, heard this years ago]
  • SQ42 "proper" is at least another 24 to 36 months out
  • as more and more new hires are brought in to replace devs, the code base gets more and more unstable.
  • "Almost no one is documenting. Almost no one talks to each other. We nod like bobbleheads, mute like carps."

The funniest backroom chat is probably still this 😁

internally, SC is considered a live game and released

Yes, influencer, game changer, call it what you will - it's modern advertising and mostly unregulated. Which is handy because lying is so much easier now.

It's when you have 64 bit coordinates, but your physics engine is only 32 bit, so trolleys kill you and medpens hit the arm in with Math.fround() probability.

My guess a lot of their issues relate to how they scaled everything down to squeeze the "verse" into the limitations of the early version of the engine. So the floating point calculations sometimes throw a wobbly. I guess they could now scale everything back up to normal size, but that would mean remaking every single asset as well as rewriting the relevant code.

There's no doubt lots of technical reasons I barely understand...but overall I still blame the servers and dodgy physics grids :)
