I've always remained "neutral", just because I choose missions based on how they benefit me rather than the factions.

In some systems I've worked hard to become allied with multiple factions, so that they offer me the most money for missions.

If I'm going to do a mission, I try to get paid as much as possible for it (unless there is a non-credit reward I'm after instead).

What are these ?

BGS.... Backgrou-blah-blah. I'm still none the wiser, and I'm very happy to leave it at that for the moment.

Well if you are only interested in preventing wars in your home system, then just make sure that no two factions have the same influence level, because that is when war or civil war breaks out.
Remember though that other players still affect what goes on in your system, not just you, and the system you have chosen is a rather busy one. Lots of player traffic means lots of BGS changes.
Most people choose a home system in a less populated area of the bubble to reduce this.

Yes. The BGS is the best part of the game in my opinion. You can change the whole balance of power and commerce in your own little part of the galaxy.
My home system was overrun with Feds until I spent about 4 months beating them in wars and kicking them out of the system.
My home system is now completely independent and only has the 5 indigenous factions. My own faction now owns all stations in it too.

I said I'd share a picture of the galaxy map showing star density near the centre of the galaxy.
I'm about 2,500ly from Sagittarius A* and here is a jump just under 50ly so you have some idea of scale and number of stars:

Sagittarius A* blackhole is here at a similar magnification - impossible to get the magnification to exactly match the above:

That's very interesting.
It looks as though your successful attempt to "change the balance of power" was achieved using a "war-like" approach. ie. using Combat Mode.
Although I see "War" as an unfortunate way of resolving any issue in the real world, it is one way, as difficult as it mayl be, I don't want to use in my playing of ED.
Like you, crib3, and as different as that may be for me, I want to play ED within certain personal constraints, just as I think you do.
However, I think the big difference being, our personal constraints are very different. Hence you play it your way, I play it mine.
And that's what is so great about ED: there are so many different ways of playing ED, and the beauty of being allowed to do so freely.

Just repeated from above, so readers and forgetful me, understand what is being talked about.
Something I also need to consider as an alternative method of payment.
At the moment I'm donating my payments to factions in 'MySystem'.
And I haven't got my insurance amount covered yet !

Oh! WOW! Particularly when you "show" the scale". 50LY that's nothing ! And from my work with X : Z : Y I have a much better feel for ED distances which I can transfer to our real World. In regard to you photos, all I can say is .

I've found the best thing to use ever. I avoided it at first. It looked complicated ...... but it's NOT !
As long as I know where you live, it's immediate, up-to-date, I assume it allows for day-light-saving and ....... Voila !

In regard to ZUNAO TUO E6-459 (see Galaxy Map above) I show its coordinates in the close up shown below:

It'snot too far from Kyloarph RD-A d1-600 (-7120 : -489 : 20790) ie. Zunao TU-O E6-459 (what stupid bloody names! ) is (1720 : 1054 : 24420)
which is "relatively" close. See below:

But it's showing a distance of 22,028.48LY to ZUNOA and that's a long way! Wait a minute, that's the distance to me in LHS 2265 !
It says so in the left-hand column.
So to know the distance between KLOARPH and ZUNOA, I need to be at one or other of those locations.
HOLD ON ! I can find out by using Pythagoras's Theorem! "c" = The Square root of "a" squared plus "b" squared.
(Sorry. This is probably boring everybody else s!itless. But I'm loving it!.)
Now .....I can square a number on my smartphone, but not sure about square roots ......
Maybe I'll have to use my Slide Rule. Don't have my electronic calculator anymore.
God! Who remembers Slide Rules!

What's the " * " for in the System name SAGITTARIUS-A* ?
If you do a SEARCH in the Galaxy Map it will only find it if you delete the *.

I always type in Sagittarius A*.
Do you remember The Pilot and the Krait Phantom episode where he goes to Sagittarius A* and his guest talks about the meaning of * in A*?
Indicates it is a strong source of radio emissions.
